modern, post modern whatever ... it depends a lot on a person's perspective. what can be modern for one can be old for another.
I mean avant garde buildlings, somehow still seem to be furnished with mid century modern stuff by eames, naguchi, mies etc. what is new becomes old, and old becomes new again...the 80's revival of art deco goes to show just that
at any given point in time there are many dynamic movments that are going on, some live, some die out. It would be a shame to consider oneself a post-modernist while one is merely chasing some ideology or view that is just a flash in the pan and is going to die out.
Interestingly enough flanuer mentions surrogacy a couple of times. I hope its not a personal need, because having been in a situation where I too investigated it, one has to have a lot of doors closed to go knock on that door. Aside from religion, there is considerable opposition to it in legal circles as well as in human/womens rights groups. That is why even in US some states as surrogacy friendly, some are not.
Regardless, isn't surrogacy..gestational or otherwise, also a backwards concept. Gestational is still a newer concept, a few decades old at best but traditional surrogacy is something that has been practised in diff cultures for ages. ppl should be looking forward to cloning, and using man made embryo housings, that serve as uterus. Donr believe me? read up, they are already working on it.

On a more serious note, who is anyone to dictate how anyone else should live their lives. Just because some people live their lives a certain way does not give them the right to pass judgment on people who they deem beneath them. Isn't it all about happiness and satisfaction? If one is satisfied with what they have, isn't that the hallmark of a happy person?
All this superficial rubbish you're talking about, believe it or not, does not matter to the masses. Most people are worried about when their next paycheck is going to come in so they can put food on the table for their families. Only the elite have the luxury to ponder this crap.

question : what concept does 'modernity' portray amongst current political and humanitarian issues today ? to what extent is it contributing towards them? other than developing strategies of liberal thought within our outlook and understanding of life, i really dont see this subject area preventing or helping overcome mainline issues of poverty, war & human suffering which dominates contemporary conditions and situation of civillisation in various areas of the world. Fine, even if all agreed that desis muslims and many others are far absorbed in this idealogy and framework of belief , what will hapen when they come out of it ? most likely theyre liable to undergoe extreme confusion and resort to some other means to overcome their paranoia or eventually understand the reality of life and embark upon an enlightened vision towards life .
so how do we transform folk entrapped in the boundaries of modernity ? how much how long how how ?
