So Cornish Pasty recipe has lard in it. I just saw. Will it do if lard is not used or substituted with something halal? I wanna make it.
Re: Yelp my Brit mates
Is it similar to Cornish Pasty? I just saw the recipe of Beef Wellington, looks easier to make.
Re: Yelp my Brit mates
The recipe already states butter, so then I might just remove lard from it.
Re: Yelp my Brit mates
^that's fine, you can use butter alone. lard was traditionally used as shortening, it makes the pastry more flaky.
just google for "making pastry without lard" you will get plenty of alternative recipes.
Re: Yelp my Brit mates
Aww thanks stoppit, will do.
Re: Yelp my Brit mates
If the recipe asks for, e.g:
25g of butter and 25g of lard
You can just use 50g of butter. That's what i usually do when recipes ask for lard.

Thanks Maroushy.
Re: Yelp my Brit mates
Can you get hold of stork? They have a block version that is suitable for pastries such as the one for cornish pasties.
Re: Yelp my Brit mates
use Crisco, i.e. vegetable shortening. its a halal sub for lard.
Re: Yelp my Brit mates
Desi ghee X2 bhai? Really?
So it’s either desi ghee or halal shortening. OK cool thanks everyone.

This is exactly what I thought of when I ready the OP. I'd defo go with the veggie shortening option as it will keep your pastry flakey!
Re: Yelp my Brit mates
Never heard of Crisco-is that a US thing? Have yet to see it this side of the pond.
Re: Yelp my Brit mates
I was wondering the same thing^

i was gonna suggest crisco shortening as well. i think it is a north american thing since you haven't heard of it :p
Re: Yelp my Brit mates
