Re: Y.R. Gillani harassing S. Rehman at political rally
phatima would have us throw away all the progress made by democracy and go back to the dark ages. if you know history, then you must know that there was a time when phatima's proposed system was implemented. In the beginning, there were sovereign kings who made all the decision on their own. Then they started including the lords and the aristocracy in the decision making process and later on common folk were allowed in. The upper house (i.e. house of lords) and the lower house (i.e. house of commons) in the british system are quite self explanatory. There was a time when the house of commons did not exist. When it was first established, it had no legislative powers. Gradually they gained power and now that is the house that makes all the decisions and the upper house is more of a ceremonial chamber than anything else.
If illiterate people are to be barred from voting in the decision makers then they should also have the choice to accept or reject any decision made by those who in no way represent them.
Re: Y.R. Gillani harassing S. Rehman at political rally
nowhere did i suggest pakistan be run by a monarchy. that's far from what i was saying. i'm thinking more like a temporary aristocracy, where educated people can hold powerful positions as opposed to jaahil politicians like they have in Pakistan (esp. in punjab.. tauba. it's a disgrace).
and i'd like to add that an aristocracy, in it's truest sense, is not one like where "sovereign kings make decisions on their own". it specifically puts educated people in position to rule a nation for the best interest of all the people.
With all due respect to the uneducated people in pakistan, they have repeatedly proven that they don't know what's best for them in terms of choosing a political leader. That's why they're in that position today... getting little to no help from the gov't.

I was not attributing that view to you. I was merely describing the evolution of political thought and democracy. You are suggesting we go back to a less advanced form of democracy. If that system was so good at solving the problems of people then why was it thrown away and replaced with the current system.
Humans are selfish beings and put their own interests before others. It is foolish to expect a class of people to work collectively for another class, when they don't have any vested interest in it. If the less educated people don't have any power to elect a politician, then is it realistic to expect from such a politician that s/he would give priority to the needs of the less educated over the needs and interests of those who will be electing him/her in the next election? Whenever there is going to be any conflict between the interests of two classes, the interests of the educated folks would always trump those of the less educated.

Classes are seperated by wealth, not education. Not once did I say that the poorer class shouldn't be allowed to vote. I only said educated people should be allowed. There are plenty of wealthy people in Pakistan that are complete jaahils. They shouldn't be allowed to vote.
There is, however, a correlation between wealth and education in society... but it is so common that it seems uncontrollable. This is precisely why I said that selective voting rights only be temporary. I guarantee we atleast won't have people like Gillani here elected.
