First let me say that I have a PS3 so I’m biased.
I would look at the exclusives and see what you like. I think the 360 has more shooter exclusives while the PS3 has more variety (Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted) but this is off the top of my head so don’t hold me to it.
The graphics on the 360 tend to be a little bit better for multi-platform games. However, PS3 exclusives blow 360 exclusives away in terms of graphics.
PSN if free while you have to pay $50 a year (I think) for Xbox Live. I’m assuming Live is better since you pay for it but (except for the month long outage this year) I have had no problems with PSN.
Beyond that, the PS3 is also a blu-ray player if that matters to you.

Does anyone even care about the PS3? No one I know whether casual or serious has one, or if they do it mostly gathers dust.

Well Xbox is huge in the States but around the world PS3 is more popular. It’s very anecdotal, most of my friends got 360s early on, got the Red Ring of Death, and traded in for PS3s but I know others who say the same thing as you (about everyone having 360s).

Well, before I buy ps3 or xbox360, I tried both games and both have nice futures. ps3 have advatage of blue-ray whereas Xbox360 are up with kinnect and voice command.
Personally speaking, I liked Xbox360 more than ps3.

I just bought a PS3 few weeks ago and its pretty cool especially because I have a HD TV. I play JRPGs though and I only have 4 games atm. If I was in Aus or America I would probably have 15 or so more right now.
Games I currently own are
Final Fantasy 13 (grind work is fun), Tales of Xillia, Alice: Madness Returns and Portal 2.
I hate portal 2 because of the motion sickness so I played a bit of it and just gave up after level 6 I was getting too sick from the falling.
A lot of people like Uncharted and I’ve played but I die too easily with guns so its not that fun for me 
I like leveling up and collecting loot more.

Does it even make sense to buy a console (PS3 or Xbox) right now or would it be better to wait for the next upgrade. Nobody knows when that’s gonna happen but it can’t be long, right?

Thats the beauty of PS3 you can download the games on PSN or pirate them also hack your console

my ps3 is almost 4 and half year old,wanna buy new slim one but new console would be out next year
also ps3 can’t be hacked with the new firmware that comes with ps3

Valkyria Chronicles (Awesome game srpg)
Demon soul’s(super hard and rewarding game)
Flower (PSN download)
Heavy rain(Movie like experiance)
Yakuza series
infamous 1 and 2 both are great games
heavenly sword nice game
and regular games like god of war3 was good but not as good as first two games ,uncharted and killzone series for the best graphics this gen,uncharted 2 was really great

hmm
I’ve started to reconsider my taste in games because i get scared too easily (realized this after playing so many hours of Alice). So the only games I would play would be Valkyria Chronicles and Journey saga (Journey, Flower and flow).
I want to buy majin and the forsaken kingdom (jrpg) but its so expensive here I can’t justify spending 6000yen on a game I would play a bit/complete and leave.

Oh man if you liked FF13 you should play the older ones. They are much better (IMO). 13 was so damn linear, and there were no towns to explore. I even liked 12, which seems to be less popular. You’d need a PS2 for 10 and 12, but you can play 7-10 on a PC with an emulator. Lots of fun to watch movies or something on your laptop when you have to grind a little bit.

I had a PS2 when I was in aus it was ok.
I liked 12 too.. the first time I got it I didn’t have a memory stick so I had to leave my PS2 on and I would cry every time I would die or somebody accidentally turned it… because all my work would have gone D:
with 13 I think I’m pretty bad player because I skip through the movies thats why I can tolerate the game. I’m going to buy 13-2 in dec and 13-3..when its cheaper not paying w/e price they want to stick to it

I’m boycotting 13-2. And most likely FF vs 13 as well unless Square Enix gets their ish together. Now they’re remastering FF10 for PS3 instead of making new games. Idiots.

most of those games are not scary
if u like jrpg,best one i played this gen was lost odyssey from sakaguchi guy but it’s exclusive to xbox 360…
heard last story is also awesome but i don’t have WII :\
there are few good jrpgs which are multiplatform you can play it on ps3
