We reckon SIL was given a wrong due date … they also told her that she would probably need a C section … In pakistan , they do a C section for every one just to earn some extra bucks …
she is so confused now … is this a dangerous situation to be in? she was given wrong dates by the gynae who is considered lahore’s second best one ! …she is now going for a second opinion as well , but is worried coz the docs seem to base the delivery date on the patients info rather then the ultrasounds /scans …

6 weeks is a bizarre number...!!
I wonder why this happened...was she unsure of her dates or was there some other reason for a large for gestational age baby...??...Were the scan results corelating to the gestational age on previous scans..??
To be off a few days or even a week or so is not that uncommon but 6 weeks...hmmm...
I understand from one of your replies that she has had 2 C-sections prior to this one...??
If thats the case then they usually suggest a C-section for the third delivery and do not attempt a normal delivery....so maybe thats their reasoning for this particular operative delivery...
but I guess no harm in a second opinion...

Chips , no she had normal deliveries both times before ... sorry i am kind of new to the baby process , so dont know , is it normal for the docs to base the delivery date , on the info that the patient gives? can they not tell from the scan how old the baby should be?
oh ok...my bad I understood she had two C-sections before this one...
if not then they should have a definite reason for why they want to do a C-section...
Delivery date is estimated on the date of the last menstrual period and then scans during the pregnancy...
They are supposed to coincide with each other and give the same estimated delivery date....a difference of few days or a week or so is considered ok depending on teh patient's history....
but 6 weeks is a huge difference....!!
I think a second opinion is her best bet at this point..
… thanks so much Chips … thats what we have she is doing now , getting a second opinion, specially now that the delivery is like just a few weeks away … I just thought i will do some research as well …coz well , you cant just totally rely on the docs to tell you everything ..
Wow, thats crazy.... as far as I know the delivery date is based on the ultrasound and the last period. Its also possible to go past the due date and the docs here wait past 2 weeks the due date, unless they detect something wrong. So going up to 42 weeks is okay.
Also, they can always induce her if she doesn't go into labor full-term, its not necessary to go for a c-section. I'm appalled at Pakistani OB/GYNs ... they'd do anything to get more money... sucks.
Mia .. like seriously , my sister is a doctor and doing her housejob in pakistan and she was telling me , the OB/GYNs are making good money through C-Secs so they always recomend it , irrespective of whether its needed or not ... I was so shocked ....
My SIL literally fought with the doc to avoid C Sec and was adamant she wants to have normal delivery and she did Alhum .. but the docs did try to do the C Sec ..its pathetic ...
^ thats horrific and SO unnecessarily stressful for the mom to be!! jeez. i hope she's got a whole support army with her in the hospital to watch her back if the doctors try to pull a fast one!!
6 weeks is a huge difference. My ultra sound scans always showed my daughter 1 week older than she actually was. I asked the ultrasound technician about it and she said its because she has good growth. But 6 weeks is insane. Lately , one of my friend's SIL was told that she'll be having twins. when her 4th month started she started getting sick she was rushed to a hospital in emergency because her own obgyn even refused to recall her case saying that i deal with thousands of cases and I cannot remember each one of them. Khair, they did her ultrasound again 1st there were no twins and second the growth of the baby was equivalent 1.5 month old fetus, sadly they had to abort :( it's the mistake of her 1st obgyn i dont know she became doctor. But i am telling u this that it's very common to hear such irresponsible conclusions on the part of doctors. careless approach that's all i can say!
if doctors are insisting upon c section that i think that has to be done. but 6 weeks sounds too impossible i think they shd take 2nd opinion.
CB the dctrs shud use her last menstrual period date, n gve her an EDD +-7 days n then they usually do an ultrasound n carry on doing them at certain intervals in the pregnancy to mke sure the measurements coincide with the dates :), like i said they r usually a week here or there but 6 weeks is not possible, tell her to sue their butts :D
when my dr. here in canada did my ultrasound, she was concerned that the baby looked bigger than the the dates i was giving by approx 1 week. Even though it was just 1 week she wanted me to get it checked and ordered a US with a technician. They are able to tell by the size of the baby at what stage its at, they measure the head size and the body size....they can tell down the week and day of how old the baby is! and then they go by your LMP to see if it coincides.
But 6 weeks is totally off the charts... there could be something wrong (God forbid) with the baby, or her dates are totally inaccurate. Either way, its something that could have been detected very early on, not so late in the game!
well...its disappointing, but there's pakistan for you.
ALL my cousins in pakistan had their babies through C section... i m talking about atleast 7-8girls over here...each have 2-3 babies now with c section ... in think in pakistan thats how doctors make money ......
6 weeks is a big difference but it's not impossible. I have a couple of questions:
1. Were her cycles regular before she got pg? and does she remember her LMP? If yes that means she had a period somewhere in the 6 weeks prior to what was supposed to be her original conception date right? I am trying to say that it isnt possible that she concieved BEFORE her LMP. conception is supposed to be about 2 weeks AFTER your last period.
When did she have her first scan? The earlier the scan the more accurately is measure the gestational age of the baby. They should go by her earlier scans for the EDD rather than the later ones.
Is it possible that her baby is just big for some reason? Usually if the mother has gestational diabetes the baby grows bigger than normal and is delivered earlier? The reason for c-section can also be that the baby is big.
I think she hsould clearly ask for a reason for C-Section. The doctors in Pakistan make money through C-Sections but the patienst are partly to blame... women here, even the educated ones, do not educate themselves properly about whats happening with thier bodies, their babies and their health. Nobody questions the doctors! Tell her to ask the doc for a reason.
Guys , Unfortunately the news was recieved this morning that the baby has passed away. They took the baby out via C-Sec and tried to revive it , but Allah mian's will was that the blessing be taken away. SIL is devastated.
