Tim Boon emerges strong candidate for Pakistan post

KARACHI: Leicestershire’s coach Tim Boon has emerged as a strong candidate to take over as the next Pakistan coach in June.
Well-placed sources told this correspondent that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has placed Boon, who has a rich experience of playing first-class cricket, on the top of the list of coaches who have so far applied for the job.
The Englishman is a qualified coach and is also computer-savvy, as required by the PCB.
According to the sources, PCB top officials have made up their minds to appoint a young coach hungry for international success rather than going for a big name who might disappoint them in the end.
Boon fits the description. He is 45 years old and is not counted among high-profile cricket coaches.
Sources said that Boon has applied for the coach of Pakistan’s national coach. The PCB advertised for the job last month setting May 15 as the deadline for applications from coaches.
Pakistan’s coach Bob Woolmer died in Kingston, Jamaica, during the World Cup in March. Jamaican Police later announced that he was murdered but is yet to find his killers. Sources said that the PCB has received several applications from countries like England, Australia and the West Indies. Several homegrown coaches have also applied for the job.
However, a few former Test cricketers including former Pakistan captain and coach Javed Miandad and Intikhab Alam have decided against applying for the job. They have instead criticised the PCB for giving an advertisement for the job of national coach.
Sources said that PCB officials have almost given up on Bangladesh’s coach Dav Whatmore. The former Australian Test cricketer is more inclined towards coaching India.

PCB may also have given up hope on Wright who may become the next coach of the Australian Academy according to Cricinfo.
