Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

There’s apparently resistance against Aaqib. Boon might be a good choice but I’m not so sure about Wright

KARACHI, April 19: Pakistan’s cricket authorities have turned to New Zealander John Wright as a possible replacement for coach Bob Woolmer, who died during the World Cup.

Sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said that some discussions had been held with Wright, 52, to find out if he would be interested in coaching the national side.

“Wright’s response was good. The board is also looking at another foreigner, Tim Boon, coach of Leicestershire, as a possible candidate,” one source said on Thursday.

The PCB on Thursday named all-rounder Shoaib Malik as captain until the end of the year and former Test player, Talat Ali, as manager for two years but did not announce a replacement for Woolmer.

Woolmer, the former England player, was coach from 2004 until March 18 this year when he was pronounced dead in hospital in Jamaica a day after Pakistan lost to debutants Ireland and were eliminated from the World Cup in the first round.

His death is being treated by Jamaican police as murder.

Pakistan also had a foreign coach, Briton Richard Pybus, in the 2003 World Cup when they did not progress beyond the first round.

“The reason the board has delayed naming a new coach is because it is still looking at several candidates some of them foreigners,” the source said.

He said Wright, who was coach of the Indian team from 2000 to 2005, was a strong candidate followed by Boon who was video analyst with the England team during their 2005 Ashes win over Australia.

Boon has also been England’s under-19 coach and of South African provincial side, Natal.

“The name of Boon has been recommended by someone in the England and Wales Cricket Board,” the source said.

Former Pakistan Test pacer, Aaqib Javed, is the strongest local candidate for the post although the source said there was resistance to his appointment.—Reuters

Re: Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

^ I don't understand why PCB doesn't go for a Head coach and Bowling coach combination?
I mean use Aaqib as a bowling coach. Where as use a foriegner for batting and fielding.
We need someone to keep working with our players on fielding continuously and our batting needs a lot of work as well. I don't think Aaqib will be able to contribute that much towards batting. I don't know about his fielding skills either.

Re: Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

I think Zakir khan in recent interviews denied that they were talking to either Wright or Boon

Re: Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

^ but even Rueters has reported the above. So whomever is the source for these people, they think its reliable enough to be quoted.

Re: Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

Fox sports also claiming that Wright is being considered

Re: Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

I think Whatmore should be considered. He just ditched the Bengalis and is available. If not, then Boon would be an interesting choice. I wouldnt go for Wright because an ex-indian team coach is the last thing Pakistan needs.

Re: Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

No wonder Javed Miandad was crying last night on television. He is desperately desperate to become the coach of Pakistan national team.
He was whining about PCB having no direction and no vision, as earlier the board has announced that the coach would be a Pakistani and now they are considering a foreign coach.

Re: Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

after the whole episode with bob woolmer

is PCB sure that another foreign coach wants to coach this team?

Re: Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

hmmm mercenary that just hatched a conspiracy theory in my mind
what if miandad used his links to wooler killed so he could get the job?
All foreigner would be scared ?

Re: Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

Whatmore is the man if PCB knows its stuff.

**Pakistan advertise for new coach **

Pakistan have officially advertised for a new national cricket coach following the death of Bob Woolmer.

Woolmer, who was set to quit at the end of his contract, was murdered in his hotel room on 18 March, a day after Pakistan exited the World Cup.

The new coach will initially be appointed for two years and is expected to start his employment from June.

**The Pakistan Cricket Board said the ideal candidate should have played at least first class cricket. **

**And they should possess an England and Wales Cricket Board Level III coach qualification, or equivalent from another country. **

Key responsibilities include working with the selection committees and director of game development, who was named as Mudassar Nazar on Monday.

He will co-ordinate that role with his job as head of the cricket academy.

Applications should be sent to the PCB by 15 May.

**Former India coach John Wright and Leicestershire’s Tim Boon are among the favourites for the job. **

The Pakistan job is widely regarded as one of the toughest in World Cricket, due to the high expectations of 160 million cricket-obsessed people, language difficulties and a series of recent controversies.

Any coach will also have to virtually rebuild the team from scratch after the 1992 World Cup champions’ humiliating exit from the 2007 edition in the Caribbean.

In a bid to usher in a new era, Pakistan last week appointed the relatively young Shoaib Malik as captain to replace Inzamam-ul-Haq.

The PCB also confirmed that 80 staff had lost their jobs in a restructuring move.

PCB also advertised for coaching roles for the NCA so time back and were looking for canidates with coaching qualifications. They didn’t manage to find anyone with qualifications and thus appointed Mudassar Nazar.

Will they they be able to get the right canidate this time, we will soon find out.

Do any canidates from Pakistan meet the crieteria as advertised including Aaqib Javed?

I know Aqib Javed has some coaching qualifications but does he have the other skills i.e. video analyasis, computer knowledge and understanding of modern sports coaching techniques etc.

Re: Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

Pak’s advertisement for Coach here :

includes “Must have good Computer Knowledge” as a pre-requisite. This should rule out many Desi contenders one would guess.

Re: Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

Whatmore will go to highest bidder–BCCI :halo:

Re: Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

Not sure if JOHN WRIGHT would do it for Pak.
When he was with India, he was known to maintain a low-key attitude to the job, not taking any pangaas with the seniors etc.
I think what Pak needs instead, is somebody who is more authoritative than John Wright in enforcing team discipline.

On second thoughts, I take it back. As per Wright's book - he did slap Sehwag once. He did what millions of Indians would pay to do.

Re: Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

This will certainly rule out so called ex coach such as Javed - who doesnot really favour using such technology.

Re: Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

Would he dare do that to the likes of Shoiab Actor and the other super stars in the team?

Re: Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

I'll say Whatmore if interested. he already did miracles with BD and previously with SL but he is more interested in coaching India.

Re: Wright, Boon possible candidates as coach?

whatmore already showed interest in taking up indian coaching position. That leave us with wright.

Sometimes i also dream that Imran Khan Quits his political carrier and take up the coaching job. Each and everyone in the team will become "teer ki tarha sidha"..
