Would you speak up?

If you saw ANY religion or race being discriminated like that would you speak up?
Are you more likely to speak up seeing a Muslim being discriminated?

Towards the end of the video it gets really interesting so do watch the whole thing.

If you have had any experiences like this, do share.

Re: Would you speak up?

This kind of reminds of the show "What would you do?" or something like that
I can't watch the video right now because I'm in class but I'm sure everyone would like to say they would speak up but when your actually confronted with these types of situations its very hard.

There have been times when I have spoken and times when I haven't because I was intimidated. But I will tell you, you feel soooooo bad/guilty when you don't say anything. I might totally be off track, once I watch the video, I'll comment more.

Edit: okay so it was that show lol, if there was any kind of injustice/bullying going on I would speak up

Re: Would you speak up?

I have never seen any Muslim being discriminated in front of me but I have seen people being attacked from other religions and race and I was too intimidated to jump in.

But I have stopped going to an ice cream shop where I saw an African American being discriminated against. I didn't say anything but just never went back.

Re: Would you speak up?

It like when us lot see someone getting abused on the train by a random stranger, some people will speak up and tell the racist/rude/drunk person to shut up, but 95% of us will sit there in awkward, embarasssed silence cos they either don't want to get involved or they are too scared to.
It can be difficult to find the courage to do so. Personally, I probly wouldn't on a train cos I'm too scared of getting a slap, but if it was in a shop I would definitely say something, I abuse shop workers all the time (karma mate, the amount of abuse I used to get in retail), only if they deserve it obv, and if I saw someone being racist regardless of their religious I would speak up for sure.
But I spose it's easy for me to say this now, but I wouldn't really know until I actually found myself in that situation.

Re: Would you speak up?

who intimates u?? :konfused:

Re: Would you speak up?

I think you put that word there, Nomi :nahi:

Maddy- train is one place I would never speak up. Those are some scary and strong people :/. But the sad part is we would want others to stand up for us in a situation like that.

Re: Would you speak up?

Yes I would!!

Re: Would you speak up?

I would speak up. It’s funny, speaking up against Muslim discrimination - of course! When it comes to gays on the other hand…

Sorry I couldn’t resist. It’s the same show, called "What Would You Do.

Re: Would you speak up?

I think i speak for everyone when i say i would speak up for ANYONE regardless of beliefs/culture/sex/colour because at the end of the day everyones human and no one deserves to be treated unjustly BUT until you're not in that situation you don't know exactly what you're capable of!

I would speak up for sure... When it comes to speaking up for a group you do not agree with... I would hesitate only if said group started it first.

I have had to speak up a lot of times in the past... in fact last week was one time.

Thing is some people dont have the sense to avoid trouble in the first place. Those with experience can pick out trouble makers in a crowd no problem, I suppose its become nature for me to "mark" people before I even sit among them. You always have to keep your senses sharp especially in public transport. Where I live its a very right wing town and theres 11 BNP candidates in the are... not to mention EDL supporters etc.

However right wingers aside you will always have chavs and young oppurtunists who just love taking digs at people they see as weak or different to themselves. Sometimes it minorities who can be bullies like our own typical Desi Bad Boys and even Goths who normally are good on the whole, but can gang up on people if they think theres something to gain by it.

I tend not to get involved in the first place if it can be helped but I hate to see people being bullied especially if theres no reason for it.

Sometimes there can be a reason though... some folks end up asking for trouble.

There is a line though that I draw... dont step in unless the person slinging the abuse is overly harsh and insulting...or if the arguements almost entirely one sided with some poor person just sat quitely having to face a tirade of abuse. Ussually though if you step in... it becomes a mocking match and I am not sharp enough with the tongue nor do I taint it with bad words.

Offcourse if things get physical or theres a threat of physical violence then thats the time I actually relish... I know its not nice but its just great when you get a chance to fight once in a while and I've never cared much about the opposition.

Best fight was in a Market when some old fellow on a walking stick was pushed to the floor by what looked like a builder type fellow big troll of a guy with at least a foot advantage in hieght and he must have wieghed about 26 Stone. I just charged him and sent him sprawling... If he had got up I would have kept punching him till his face was pulp... but he was smart enough to stay down while I helped the old fellow up.

I just love a good scrap.

Re: Would you speak up?

I would speak up.. I have done before (inc when desis go on about black ppl here in the UK)..

Does anyone remember that clip from a few months back where the racist white woman on the tube was being told off by other commuters..

Re: Would you speak up?

Btw there's also the issue of bystanders 'following' each other.. can't remember what it's called lol but we studied it in Psychology.. when people are in a crowd they tend to copy what others around them do and I suppose it can work both ways eg. if one or two answered back to the guy serving it's a lot more likely that others would also but if they kept quiet it's more likely the others would do as well..

Aaah yes the incident on the Tram... that became viral on youtube.

As for the bystanders following idea I think thats the Sheeple notion.

Re: Would you speak up?

I'd like to think I would speak up regardless of who the being discriminated. In fact I have spoken up on a bus when a few high schoolers were bothering a woman. I am not sure If I would be able to speak up in all situations because it can be really intimidating like Gaia said.

Re: Would you speak up?

being a good Samaritan isn't a safe thing to do now. one must do all he/she can do without getting directly involved in the foray. one can call the police for instance. we do hear good Samaritans loosing their lives. one must protect himself before he can help someone else.

Re: Would you speak up?

.....That's what my teacher used to say.

Re: Would you speak up?

Done it before.

For someone being picked on for being a Pakistani/being Black/being a straight-shooter in a rough neighbourhood.

Re: Would you speak up?

Discrimination can be subtle also -I always make it a point to make eye contact and acknowledge people in even the roughest neighborhoods - and they reward you with a nod back.

Re: Would you speak up?

Great to watch the custpmers stand up for her. The gentleman who broke down - son returned from Iraq - I would like to think that is the true America. And the gal who also broke down - that is America at its best. Love this country. Most people would do the right thing.

Re: Would you speak up?

Similar incident happened to me with my friend who is a hijabi. We were at some store in northern Ontario where there are no desis. Neway..this guy who was a customer called my friend camel jockey. I and her spoke up and by the end he was literally apologizing on her feet. Very sad.
