I have thought about that quite a few times. With the current technology no but if by the time I am old and space travel is well underway (which is highly unlikely) then I would totally jump on board.

Weird. I was just watching a documentary yesterday about the End of Earth where they assume a neutron star will devour our solar system in 75 years. In this documentary, they start working on building a megaship so evacuate the earth before the Neutron core eats up the earth and find a new home for our species. Very interesting documentary but a bit far fetched. They talk about different propulsion technologies we have including anti matter (yeah right). Their supposed plan is to evacuate about 250,000 people kind of like the movie 2012. The ship looks like the on in Elysium mainly due to artificial gravity. As to if I would go, Yes YES I would but if the ticket $500 Million then somebody better pay for me!

And it's weird that you spoke about the movie 2012. I queued that movie up in Apple TV for my mom last night. She watched it this morning. She loved it so much that she called me right after it finished, to thank me. Also she wanted the credit song to be uploaded in her iPod, and she does not even listen to English songs

By to give back to the original post, I think it would be technologically impossible, and socially a disaster to transport a large amount of population to another planet.
I mean forget about how you settle the matter here about who to go and who to stay back; how would to reset and restart a society once you reach an alien planet? The social hierarchy, the political system, the economic stability! We would have to pretty much start from scratch. And if that is the case, then something similar to what Noah did. Save few fertile couples if different ages and send them out to survive

Like I said, the ticket will be in millions of dollars if you wanted to buy your way out of here. Otherwise, they will take the healthiest and genetically diverse group of people. Few lucky ones will get to go. Even then I don't think it will end up that way. The 1% ruling the world government will be the 1% leaving the earth. If they fund the project then they will be the majority of the evacuees. Besides the rich and powerful, it will be the engineers, doctors, scientists, and other professionals and their families that will make up the rest of the evacuees. Interestingly enough, the ship in the documentary was named the Noah's Ark.

Why not send one very intelligent, young and fertile guy, with 10 very beautiful healthy and young ladies? If the purpose for the human race to survive, then few quality specimen would be just fine, and will do the job

i think if the planet is big enough, there’s no problem with mass migration. but what is on the planet? is it like present day earth minus humans?

Unless the planet was closer to us, mass migration is not possible. We definitely can’t take billions of people to another planet light years away. The exoplanets scientists are talking about are hundreds of light years away. As for what is on the planet, we won’t know until we get there. It may be in any stage of it’s life. Evacuating earth will be our last resort if there is absolutely no way to save the planet from destruction.
