Would you keep a gun a home?

–especially if you have kids?

I know many instances where people have been hurt due to gun accidents at home. Some have been fatal. I understand that sometimes people like to keep guns at home due to safety reasons, hunting, etc… but I do not agree, at all.

What do you say?

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

I kinda want to, begum definitely does not
so we dont
if I had a stronger view about having one, then I would get one.
tasers...maybe :)
but then I may tase ppl for the hell of it

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

MY BIL has tons of hunting guns at home. He sits for hours cleaning them, and sometimes they are loaded. As careful as he may be, there's always human error...little accidents.

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

keep away from the 'reach' of children.....simple....

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

I agree with Nomica.

I personally prefer to fight :faris: but to be honest I was taught to use everything and anything as a weapon.

I have a passion for these sorts of things now… having had a better understanding of them than most people I always think such things carefully. Contrary to what some assume I am not a mindless brute but a being of some sense and in this wicked world I am a real expert at staying alive… so far so good.

Hoever only recently I have had to consider things very carefully.

In the UK I have to comply with all the laws and therefore Automatic weapons are out of the equation. However I keep a score of Hunting rifles all licenced a few what you might call anti material rifles… In other words weapons that are what you might use in a real war time scenario or for serious hunting. And a brace of Pistols from modern Firearms to classic revolvers and even a flintlock here and there.

I however have to keep them all in a secure gun cabinet which is in a bomb proof box basically theres no way your going to get one out in a hurry… it takes hours to find them and clean them… Due to my line of work however I am supposed to have a working knowledge of most small arms. I have a bit of a history.

Anyway without divulging too much I would advise those that are carefull to take full steps and abide by all regulations from Health and Saftey to actual maintenace and the general legislattuer of the country in which you live. Guns are definately not toys you keep by the bedside table.

My consolation is that almost all my Weapons are not operatable by a Child even a full grown man wont be able to use most of my rifles and guns as they are real brutes… but to be extra safe they are not openly available in the first place.

It took a great deal of patience from both me and my wife. She is now more knowlegdeable on weapons than most men and will definately not be showing anything to the Children. In fact I have no intetnion of passing on my skills to my children, weapons craft is usefull but only if they really need it which right now it’s a no no.

As for the idea of keeping a weapon in your home… security is a big consideration. Not only should it be almost impossible for you to get one in a hurry but doubly impossible for anyone else to get one either suppose we were out of the house one day and some idiot broke in… theres every chance he will take our TV and PC… but unless he brings High explosives and a lot of other specialist equipment therese no way he is going away with my gun Cabinet… com War Safe.

In fact my close friend who held a licence was raided by bailiffs over a parking fine (he had payed the fine but the bailifs got the notice too late)… they planned a raid into his home and stopped short of arresting him when the Police asked them politley to back off as the guy was a licensed firearms expert and ex commando for the 2nd Battalion Parachute regiment… that was one of the more comical episodes in my new Bosses life… anyway.

Yeah there sometimes is a pressing need for firearms but do be aware theres more to a gun than bullets. If you want the responsibiltiy of owning a gun be prepared for all the wiegth that comes with it… and frankly in the UK the laws are so tight the average Joe has no chance.

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

If you dont mind me asking I gather from the way your talking about the matter... your considering a gun perhaps as a defence measure or even a detterent.

Well I would like to help you along with the defence of ones home comprises more than the obvious. Location, type of access to property, type of nieghbourhood. All are factors that determine the sort of defence system to have in place for Allah na karien an emergency. It's not about being Paranoid it's just very basic security and survival considerations.

These can also influence the type of weapon you choose... for example if your in a Flat or Urban shared accomadation, hotel or anything where the area you occupy is in close proximity to others... having an Assualt rifle for example is a crazy idea. The shots from a 7.62mm or 5.56mm standard cartridge will punch through several walls and even hit targets beyond what you were aiming at... automatic weapons are also regretably very easy to use and a teenager could easily wreak havock with one even a child Allah na karien.

However take a Smith Wesson .44 or .45 revolver then the chance of hitting long range targets is less likely as is the likelihood that it will be so easy for a youngster to wield effectively... this does depend on various factors but the stopping power of even a simple revolver is more than adequate to put most attackers out.

On the subject of Tasers thats a very interesting alternative however they are very unpredictable and currently in the UK theres a big debate over allowing front line Police Officers to carry them. You see sometimes Tasers are too powerfull or they are too weak against some targets. A stun gun is a very effective defence weapon but it's limited range is a problem.

However not everything is decided by armed encounter... even simple planning, alarms, evasion routes and other saftey procedures in the home are just as important as the last resort. Never think of the Gun or any other Weapon as first resort or as the sole means of your defence.

Even men with guns have been beaten to pulp by attackers that sneeked in through an open window. :)

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

Faris bhai...they are talking about USA.....where guns are just like Cell Phones....anyone can have em.....and stuff like that..

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

I see.

In the USA it's still a simmilar issue however. People need to understand that it's never the fault of the Gun but the person who owns it...

If you intend to keep a gun just beware of all the red tape. Even in the USA accidents can happen.

Personally I own and will continue to own guns for the foreseable future they are tools of my trade and like all tools I must be responsible for them.

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

no way, jose.

Does he keep them locked away? If they are for hunting, why are they kept loaded?

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

if u really want,to keep guns at ur home then keep them away from kids,....
and adults should also be very careful...

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

Maybe he's just too lazy...dunno. He gets enough chittars from his wife and mom :D

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

Sure you've just got to be careful if you want to avoid any accidents. Its common sense to keep anything dangerous out of the reach of children.

There are multiple forms of safety that can prevent accidental discharge or perhaps use by a child.

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

I don't know much about guns, but I hear of accidents more often than not. :(

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

Accidents are almost always caused by human error. Yes, guns can be dangerous but its up to the owner to be responsible enough to prevent them from being accessed by children or being accidentally discharged. Also we hear of accidents because otherwise it wouldn’t make news :hehe:

Responsible gun owners will never keep their firearms in an obvious and easy to reach place. If its easy for your children to see and reach, its easy for any unwanted intruders to see and reach. Think smart, keep a firearms cabinet, make sure only you have access to it.

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

Most guns since the 50’s have saftey features, I however do know idiots that disregard them… :smack:

Never customise a gun if you dont know what your doing. I had a friend who was a top sniper and used to file down the trigger mechanism on his hunting rifles which used the Imperial .303 rounds. Trouble was others copied his style thinking it was cool but they didn’t realise that filing down the trigger made it super sensitive and after several accidents it was made illegal in Punjab to tamper with the mechanism of any hunting rifle when selling it.

When buying a gun, as I have allready said think carefully about the type of weapon and the reasons and factors that come into keeping and using one.

As for keeping loaded weapons in the house, Precision rifles have special ammunition that is often made of softer metal with a blowback mechanism that absorbs recoil. Some high precision rifles such as hunting pieces that use a single bolt action or lever action are kept loaded to prevent dirt building up in the chamber, often a greased cartridge is used to keep the gun air tight.

But for most firearms theres no need to keep them loaded or primed even automatic weapons should be stored without thier magazines attached, you can still have a loaded magazine stored with it… and you can quickly have your weapon loaded, but a cocked or primed gun is just asking for trouble.

Well said.

Yes accidents do happen, but I have never known an expert to mess up ussually its amatuers who make the mistakes. Not saying experts dont make errors human nature is such, however it’s ussually your Born again 40’s generation or the dilinquent youths who start popping off shots becuase they seem to think it’s “cool”.

Guns are instruments of death, treat them as such and you wont go wrong.

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

Yes I do - how could a guy with a shooting index 6 wouldn’t :snooty:

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

:hehe:

Fair point.

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

Nah, my kirket balla and zanjeers will do.

Re: Would you keep a gun a home?

I wouldn’t. I actually don’t understand how it can provide more safety. If someone breaks into your house do you tell them ‘wait please, let me go and get my gun’..?!
