My question stems from a common practice in our culture where ammi ji promises her sister that her son will marry the khala’s daughter, etc etc… but when the time comes, one of the kids doesn’t like their cousin and wants out. All hell breaks loose, family ties get affected, bad’duas galore, etc etc…
Re: Would you "arrange" marriages between your kids during their childhood?
heck NO!!
but do we kid around abotu it... YES!!
My sister has four boys and she always used to tease me that my 4 daughters will be her bahus.. when we found out that we were having a boy.. my BIL jokingly told my sister that there is no hope there, we need to start looking somewhere else for our boys :D
I cant believe people would still think about such rishtas!! seriously!
Re: Would you "arrange" marriages between your kids during their childhood?
This has happened twice in my family :D the first one, it happened like in the original post, all hell broke loose etc...eventually both cousins found others are settled into their own married lives (seperately of course)
in the 2nd case, well they were born in the 1960s, so I guess it was alot more common and normal then....not sure how the guy felt about it, but the girl told me that she'd always loved him and was happy about it..but I think cz she was conditioned from a very young age to know that "this is my partner"... funny enough neither of the two's siblings had that kind of rishta with anyone else so I guess it was a one time thing.
Re: Would you "arrange" marriages between your kids during their childhood?
NO!!
Zamaana badal gaya hai...I'm really glad our generation is recognising what a messed up 'tradition' this really is and hopefully we'll stamp it out altogether. If they suddenly fall in love 20 years later, fine, but fixing their rishta at birth is just jahil.

my grandmother tried to do that with me and my cousin when I was born but THANK THE LORD my parents were like UHHH ARE YOU CRAZY!? Now he's married and I'm enjoying the good life (aka single)
