I don’t think that’s the case. I am a non believer and my stance is “Everyone is super wrong until one is proven right by some form of deductive logic.” Having supportive empirical evidence will blow everything out of the water but we know it’s nearly impossible to do in philosophical discussions/theology.
Having said that, I agree with you that the whole idea is NULL because it’s all hearsay. It makes for an interesting discussion but that’s all you will ever get out of a discussion like this.
As for the topic on hand, I don’t think religion should be banned. Religion is a tool that people can use to bring out the best or worst in them. Religion on its own is harmless. It’s humanity that we should fear.
