World's worst violators of religious freedom

Today United Nations released World’s worst violators of religious freedom. The 2006 list of the world’s worst violators of religious freedom includes Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Vietnam, Pakistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom is highlighting 11 countries as having the worst records on allowing and protecting religious freedom. The findings come in the congressionally mandated group’s annual report for 2006. The agency’s findings and recommendations go to the White House, the State Department and to Capitol Hill.

The 2006 list of the world’s worst violators of religious freedom includes Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Vietnam, Pakistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Richard Land, a member of the Commission, said a delegation visited China in August 2005, after three years of diplomatic efforts by the U.S. government.

“The Commission found that religious freedom conditions in China continue to be poor. Chinese government officials control, monitor and restrain the activities of all religious communities, specifically targeting unregistered and illegal groups, such as the Uighur Muslims, house church Protestants, unregistered Catholics, Tibetan Buddhists and practitioners of Falun Gong,” said Land.

Phuntsog Nyidron, a Tibetan nun who spent 15 years in Chinese prisons, told reporters she has first-hand experience of religious restrictions in Tibet, a remote Himalayan region that is within Chinese borders.

“Even though monasteries and nunneries are supposed to be places for the study of religious philosophy, in Tibet, what we see is these monasteries and nunneries are administered and governed by an officially appointed committee,” noted Phuntsog Nyidron.

The 34-year-old Tibetan nun was allowed to leave Tibet in March, shortly before Chinese President Hu Jintao visited the United States.

Meanwhile, Nina Shea, another member of the Commission, called on the U.S. government to take action against Saudi Arabia, a country which the State Department named as a so-called country of particular concern in its annual religious freedom report in November 2005.

“Since religious freedom conditions in Saudi Arabia have not substantially improved in the last year, the U.S. government must not hesitate in taking aggressive action to demonstrate that it will not disregard the persistent and egregious religious freedom violations committed by the Saudi government,” she said.

Shea noted that a waiver period Washington initially granted to Riyadh, which allowed the two sides to discuss the issue, has expired. She also urged that any agreement reached between the U.S. and Saudi governments be made public.

Meanwhile, although neither Afghanistan nor Iraq were at the top of the list, the Commission said both countries merit special mention.

Commissioner Preeta Bansal said Afghanistan has been added to the group’s watch list, which is made up of countries where the Commission has concerns about the future of religious freedom.

“The principal concern of the Commission consists of flaws in the country’s new Constitution,” she said. “The Constitution does not contain clear protections for the right of freedom of religion or belief for individual Afghan citizens.”

As an example, she pointed to the recent high-profile case of Abdur Rahman, an Afghan citizen who was threatened with the death penalty for converting from Islam to Christianity.

On Iraq, Commissioner Richard Land described a “grave escalation” of sectarian violence there. He said as the U.S. government helps with Iraq’s political reconstruction, it has what he called a “special obligation” to take steps to help strengthen and ensure protection of Iraqi rights.

Re: World's worst violators of religious freedom

I fail to understand why India is not in the list.

That is a country where sectarian violence is only second probably to Iraq.

Re: World's worst violators of religious freedom

I am amazed as well :D, may be there is something good about India afterall, isnt it???

Re: World’s worst violators of religious freedom

Yep there is, so long the dragon gets bigger and a threat to US.

Re: World's worst violators of religious freedom

May be you need to rethink what you read and where you read?
If you do a management course there is a word "Selective Hearing or Reading", and its told to all to be managers to avoid that, you should also try that........

Re: World's worst violators of religious freedom

China doesn't allow religious freedom that's known all to us. So please make intelligent conversation. Reports after reports from US have praised them for the economic progress...
Please also try to understand how people in nations with freedom of expression work and report..

Re: World's worst violators of religious freedom

I fully disagree.

India is a country where Zakir Naik openly criticizes Hinduism in a congregation of thousands of people and MF Hussain gets away by painting nude paintings of Hindu goddesses. There are *literally*1500-2000 madrassas for every ashram in India and where not even the Courts can direct the All India Muslim Personal Law Board to dictate laws for Muslims.

At the blasts at the Holy city of Varanasi where 15 people were killed, no riots occured. Same thing about 2005 pre-Diwali blasts or the killings at Akshardham temple or the attack at Ayodhya or the 2003 twin Mumbai bomb blasts.

Babri masjid is just one disputed stucture. Mosques have been built over destroying by half, many Hindu temples as a mark of insult by Muslim rulers (Kashi and Mathura are examples).

The situation of Hindus in Pakistan is much more precarious (what with one traditional wedding after 18 years).

If you continue to hark back at Gujarat 2002, I'm afraid you'll never get too far in your arguments. Even the US discriminated against Blacks like dalits in India upto as late as the 1960s. That doesnt mean your record gets stuck at the 1960s.
Agreed that its only 4 years since Gujrarat 2002 (250 Hindus were also killed post-Godhra and 40,000 Hindus made refugees), but there are far more examples after that that prove India is not a sectarian state-violence prone country.

Re: World's worst violators of religious freedom

Let Bharatis deal with Bharat and its less than desired record on religious freedom.

And you are more than welcome to open a thread in World forum.

This thread however is meant for Pakistan. We ought to accept our "huge" shortcomings when it comes religious freedom. We have snatched away this precious freedom using whole lot of different let's say front door and back door policies.

Front door policy is based on Pakistani laws enshrined in our books thanks to Mullahtic street violence and our slavery to Saudis (I won't say Wahabis as this word creates indigestion for some mods).

Back door policies are purely as the result of how we want to practice our version of religion and show-it-off via 100s of little known groups or parties. Everyone of these parties want to defend their version of Mohammad pbuh and they are motivated enough to kill the innocent men, women, and children.

The whole situation has resulted in a non-stop violence and successfully brought down Pakistan from a forward looking, enlightened society of the 70's down to level of Biddu nomadic jannat right in the middle of a god-awful desert.

Funny how some of our NRPs (non-resident-Pakistanis) tend to live and rather thrive in secular, European societies. Still they want to bring Arab or Irani hell to Pakistan.

Sad isn't it?

There is no way out of this hell until we close the front and the back doors to this tribalistic practice of Islam.

To close the front door fanaticism, we must repeal blasphemy laws and rid ourselves from the hood-hood (wood-pecker) hoodood laws.

For backdoor hujra-bazi fanatics, we ought to deport Mullahs to their desired Mullah-cracy either in Saudi or in Iran. They can go over their and work on implementing either Wahabi, or Shia versions of Mullahtic-heaven. If any of these Mullahs refuse, then set up a small island (even on a barge) in the Arabian sea 100 miles from Karachi and ship all of them over there. Give them the loudest speaker systems, AK47s, and let them go at each other. The survivors of this religious-love should then be shipped to Gitmo. Heck we'll even pay $50 a night to Uncle Sam.

Down with the killers of Pakistani-Shias, Pakistani-Ahmadis, and Pakistani-Christians.

Re: World's worst violators of religious freedom

There is a difference between what a state does and whats its ppl do.I think on the public level,Indians definately are more fanatical.I mean just count how many missionaries get killed every yr in India.Remember the state in India which banned"forced conversions".It was just a tool to prevent the underpreviliged low cast hindus from being converted by the Christians. And there are enough voilent acts in India due to religious differences.
BTW,why do u think these supposed states and reports cant be biased.Heck their reportts said Iraq had WMDs,didnt find a needle.

In Pakistan, most of our religion tensions are exported rather than home made.Once we can get a grip of ourselves,we can ask Saudis to stop sending their idiotic mullahs and their stone age ideology.
somethings in Hudood laws need to be changed. But ahmadis are still non muslims, and its not just Pakistan, all other muslims countries accept that too.So dont use one excuse to justify another.

Re: World’s worst violators of religious freedom

Try to comprehend instead of beat around the bush. The bigger the dragon gets the more hupla about India.. Once the dragon is dealt with India can go back in bed with commies/russkies who cares certainly not the west.

Re: World's worst violators of religious freedom

Yes exactly, its all a hype now that U.S. wants to use India against the Chinese. We know the story,we've been thru it.and once they use them, theyll garbage them as well. All they really have to do is b asically encourage their companies to open their call centre in some other country:P.

Re: World's worst violators of religious freedom

Yaar, if you say that China has religious freedom... I don't know how to take conversation forward.........
Good morning ... .Whenever you wake up....

Re: World's worst violators of religious freedom

You too should try it.

Remember, the burning of Quran, burning of muslims, raping the nuns, burning missionaroes alive, Hindutva shouters being in power for almost a decade.

Re: World's worst violators of religious freedom

And what is most precarios? thousands of muslims burnt alive in India while not even a single incident of this nature has happened in Pakistan in 50 years.

Re: World’s worst violators of religious freedom

And perhaps this will help:

Re: World's worst violators of religious freedom

"State" is being described not the general population. Pakistan has its blasphemy laws, China certainly has some serious problem with religion, Saudi Arabia well least said better. India has 150million practicing Muslims with their own family laws, India is a "secular" state as per their constitution, thus separation of state and religion. What happens by the act of its people which also includes state functionaries cannot be considered "state" sanctioned policies, cause it has no official bearing. Unfortunately for Pakistan, our blasphemy laws are part of the government and have yet to be questioned or changed by the elected representatives.

Re: World's worst violators of religious freedom

That happened once in 2002. Besides, 200 Hindus too were killed in those riots and 40,000 made homeless.

[/quote]
Thats a complete lie. Probably far more incidences of this kind have happened on a small-scale in Pakistan than in Gujarat 2002. Christians, Hindus and Sikhs live in perpetual fear in Pakistan. It was after 60 years that you got a first Sikh officer and 18 years after a Hindu traditional wedding took place. That itself should tell volumes.

Re: World's worst violators of religious freedom

Its not a lie, it is truth, no incident has ever taken place.

And don't forget that a muslim was burnt alive just a few days ago.

And why don't u go over the link i mentioned above, that speaks volumes of religious freedom in India.

Re: World’s worst violators of religious freedom

acha…

and this speaks volumes of religious freedom in your country

http://www.state.gov/g/drl/rls/irf/2002/14026.htm

from the same source by the way..

Re: World’s worst violators of religious freedom

I never said China has religions let alone religious freedom but I did said try to comprehend.
