As with every other thing in the world, it depends on how you use it.
You can use fire to cook food,provide heat,save yourself from animal attacks etc & you can use the same fire to kill people ,properties etc etc .

If there was no religion what would have stopped people from hurting their neighbors for their benefit.Steal when they want something.Kill when they hate a person etc etc.

Well , as I said earlier ,What people use it for is another issue.Some use it for good & some don't but that doesn't make religion in itself a bad thing.Just like a knife or fire in itself aren't bad things.

i think in at least some parts of today's world, religion is more of a burden than a benefit to society. imho (not meant to offend anyone) religions usually tend to outlive the societies they were meant for, and while starting off as huge reformative movements end up as a ball and chain on the feet of societies later on.
would the world without any religion ever be better? probably not. but as man understands the universe he lives in better and better, it does become important to revise religious rulings or compartmentalize faith out from public life. otherwise, stagnation sets in, which may be a bad thing if the rest of the world doesn't stagnate with you.

Doesn't that mean religions could not handle / controlled human beings, but human beings used the religions to exploit there fellow human beings?

Thats the point, but unfortunately almost all the religions are orthodox in their very basics, afraid of accepting changes :)

The above lines are the reflection of the thought that although at inceptions religion are meant for positive purposes (e.g. to create awareness about the social evils of the society), but eventually the religion becomes tool of exploitations, when not followed in true spirit.

Nopes religion is not just believing in after world its about way of life. To be a better person we need religion, otherwise our moral values will be nothing.

But religion is not the only source of moral values. We can see many nations who don't follow religion rigidly following best morals in the world and there are nations who are ready to kill on the name of religion with no moral values.

totally agree. Without Religion, we cant stop our kids from extra marital sex, gambling, alcohol and such evils.
