World T20 - Group 2: Australia v Pakistan at Dhaka, Sunday 23rd March. H/L Post#413

Can they do it on Pakistan Day?

Pak need to win all their remaining games to have any chance of qualifying for the semis.

Ahmed Shehzad, Kamran Akmal, Sohaib Maqsood, Umar Akmal and Afridi need to deliver with the bat.

The batting order was all wrong today. Your best strikers (Sohaib, Umar and Afridi) should play the maximum number of overs

This should be our team against Australia:

Ahmed Shehzad
Kamran Akmal
Sohaib Maqsood
Umar Akmal
Shahid Afridi
Hafeez
Sharjeel/Malik
Bhatti
Gul
Ajmal
Zulfiqar Babar

We need to go with a spin-heavy attack. **Pacers unless they are very good are useless in T20 format
**
Head to head: Of the 11 games so far, Pak have won 6 & Aus 4; one game was tied

We are winning this one sure

Go all out attack with spin

On second thoughts open with Shehzad and Sharjeel (is a natural opener so expecting him to do well at 6 or 7 might be asking too much of him!). L/R combination might just work against Australia. Drop Malik and Junaid.
Hafeez needs to drop down the order

Ahmed Shehzad
Sharjeel
Kamran Akmal
Sohaib Maqsood
Umar Akmal
Shahid Afridi
Hafeez
Bhatti
Gul
Ajmal
Zulfiqar Babar

I think Pakiistan have a mental block losing every time from India in a world cup...may be they can win if they play as normal...hmmmmmmm

Losing Kamran Akmal's wicket was a turning point towards defeat as Shehzad played an ugly innings today... :D

Moin Khan, the Pakistan coach, has as much confidence in his spinners as the Australia captainGeorge Bailey has in his batsmen’s abilities to counter the threat.
The influence of spin in Sunday’s contest, quite predictably, is on everyone’s lips. Saeed Ajmal has the most wickets for a spinner against Australia. Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Hafeez have done well in the past and Zulfiqar Babar is also likely to get a look in if Pakistan are looking to play three specialist spinners.
“Well, they can be [susceptible against spin], but of course they’ve been playing really good cricket for a very long time,” Moin said. "But I still believe in my spinners. I think we’re capable to get them.
“We have lots of options in the team. We didn’t bowl Shoaib Malik [against India], but we’ve got the option there. We have good spinners with us, so we’ll see. It depends on the type of pitch we get in the next match. So we’ll definitely do according to the opposition.”
Bailey is well aware of the threat, and wants his batsmen to stand up to the challenge of playing in conditions suitable and familiar to their opposition.
“We went through the Pakistan team in our meeting last night, and there are so many match-winners,” he said. "I think historically we have struggled against their spinners. If we are to win, we have to play their spinners well.
“I think we have seen most of them now, in different times. What you do is talk about experiences from the past and try to make it better. They have three spinners among the top ten in T20s so they are a very strong spin side. The conditions can be challenging for us, but we have a strong batting line-up that can overcome that.”
Brad Hodge is the only player from the current squad who has played in Bangladesh in the last year or so and the team took to television footage to arm themselves for the upcoming battle. They watched Pakistan’sopening match in the World T20 and noted how India’s Amit Mishra used a bit of drift and dip to restrict and dupe the batsmen, and also Ajmal accuracy and how he bowled slightly quicker.
“I think most of the guys watched it in the hotel last night,” Bailey said. “It was a great chance to see how India and Pakistan played. There was a lot of information to be gathered. Most guys took the opportunity.”
“Hodge has been great for us. He has given us a lot of information on how the wicket might play here and how it changes from day to night; also about players that we haven’t seen.”
He would bank on the team’s variety, particularly in their own bowling attack. Australia have called up, 43-year old left-arm chinaman Brad Hogg, who will be assisted by legspinner James Muirhead and part-timer Glenn Maxwell.
“I think we have a little more versatility, in terms of what we can do with the ball,” Bailey said. “I think we have a little more power with the bat. These are the two differences [between this squad and the one that played in the 2012 World T20s].”
Moin would like to see Pakistan, already one-down in the tournament, to fight harder against an upbeat Australian side. “We’ve already lost one match but I still believe in the abilities of my team. We have to come back really hard and go do something resilient, otherwise it’s definitely going to be a very difficult match because their attitude is very good. We have to fight it out.”

Big Picture
This is where it all begins for Australia, the push for that elusive World T20 title. George Bailey’s men enter this tournament with five wins from their past five games but those were all in vastly different conditions in Australia and South Africa. The slower pitches in Bangladesh will provide a new challenge, although the massive opening stand of 113 from eight overs between David Warner and Aaron Finch in the practice match against New Zealand in Fatullah was encouraging.
Pakistan’s campaign started with a defeat at the hands of India on Friday and while one loss might not hurt their overall chances too much, two from two would make it difficult to fight back into the tournament. It was a lacklustre batting display that set Pakistan on the road to defeat and that is where they require a big improvement in this contest. If any team in world cricket is capable of following a shambles with a success two days later, it is Pakistan.
These teams have not met in a T20 since the group stage of the 2012 World T20 in Sri Lanka, when Pakistan cruised to victory thanks to their spinners. And that is the big danger for Australia once again. For all of the power in their batting line-up, most of their biggest hitters are happier when the ball comes on at pace than when dealing with tweakers with tough variations. And with India and West Indies also in this group, this match will be a pointer to how Australia might handle similar spin challenges later in the tournament.
Form guide

Watch out for
David Warner’s recent form across all formats is as imposing as any batsman in this tournament. In the ODIs against England in January he made 65, 18 and 71, then followed that in the South Africa Tests with 12, 115, 70, 66, 135 and 145. Then there was the small matter of 40 from 16 balls in the rain-shortened T20 in Durban. And to cap it off, his only warm-up in Bangladesh brought 65 from 26 deliveries against New Zealand. This is a man who is striking the ball as well, and as consistently, as he ever has. He just needs to make sure Saeed Ajmal and co do not get on top of him.
In 10 T20s against Australia, Saeed Ajmal has collected 18 wickets at 13.22 and has gone for five an over or less every time he has met them in Asia. In turning conditions Ajmal ties the Australians down; they cannot get him away and the pressure builds wickets. His doosra especially will cause some headaches for batsmen who have spent the summer dealing with more conventional spin.
Team news
Australia allrounder James Faulkner will miss the game, as he is yet to recover from a knee injury. It could mean that Daniel Christian retains the bowling allrounder spot.
Australia (possible) 1 Aaron Finch, 2 David Warner, 3 Shane Watson, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 George Bailey (capt), 6 Brad Hodge, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Daniel Christian, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 11 Brad Hogg
It was Pakistan’s batting that let the side down in their loss to India and the only backup batsman in the squad is Sharjeel Khan. However, given that spin is likely to be their trump card against Australia, they may play two seamers rather than three and bring in the left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar.
Pakistan (possible) 1 Kamran Akmal (wk), 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Mohammad Hafeez (capt), 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Shahid Afridi, 7 Sohaib Maqsood, 8 Bilawal Bhatti/Zulfiqar Babar, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Junaid Khan
Pitch and conditions
Spin played a key role in the first game at this venue, the Bangladesh victory over Afghanistan, and again in Friday’s India-Pakistan match. Again the slow bowlers should have plenty to work with. However, the teams will have to keep an eye towards the skies: it rained in Dhaka on Saturday and more wet spells are forecast for Sunday afternoon.
Stats and Trivia
Australia and Pakistan have met in 11 T20s - Pakistan have won six, Australia four and there has been one tie, which Pakistan won in a Super Over
The Pakistan side features the three top wicket takers in T20 internationals: Saeed Ajmal (82), Umar Gul (75) and Shahid Afridi (73)Quotes

While spin-heavy attack is the way to go against Australia, Pakistan need to beware that good pace bowlers can exploit these conditions as well just as we found out against RSA in the warm-up game.

Batting is the key. Need to score 170+ to give ourselves a decent chance

re: World T20 - Group 2: Australia v Pakistan at Dhaka, Sunday 23rd March. H/L Post#413

They have to hit the balls and make runs with care from the very beginning till the end...target should be near 200 runs... :D

Every regular batsman should be held for the ultimate responsibility to play his minimum 18-20 balls quota with great care and in a productive manner... :D

The bowlers should aim for the dotballs first and the wickets later...hmmmmmm

not a big fan of sharjeel lately, however, need to have him tomorrow in place of Malik. Let him go all out, especially in the PP. You don't PP the way we played yesterday. Send Kamran Akmal and Sharjeel, followed by Shehzad.
