World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

NEW YORK 12/09/05 —** A British philosophy professor who has been a leading champion of atheism for more than a half-century has changed his mind. He now believes in God based on scientific evidence, and says so on a video released Thursday.**

At age 81, after decades of insisting belief is a mistake, Antony Flew has concluded that some sort of intelligence or first cause must have created the universe. A super-intelligence is the only good explanation for the origin of life and the complexity of nature, Flew said in a telephone interview from England.

Flew said he’s best labeled a deist like Thomas Jefferson, whose God was not actively involved in people’s lives.

“I’m thinking of a God very different from the God of the Christian and far and away from the God of Islam, because both are depicted as omnipotent Oriental despots, cosmic Saddam Husseins,” he said. “It could be a person in the sense of a being that has intelligence and a purpose, I suppose.”

Flew first made his mark with the 1950 article “Theology and Falsification,” based on a paper for the Socratic Club, a weekly Oxford religious forum led by writer and Christian thinker C.S. Lewis.

Over the years, Flew proclaimed the lack of evidence for God while teaching at Oxford, Aberdeen, Keele, and Reading universities in Britain, in visits to numerous U.S. and Canadian campuses and in books, articles, lectures and debates.

Yet biologists’ investigation of DNA “has shown, by the almost unbelievable complexity of the arrangements which are needed to produce (life), that intelligence must have been involved,” Flew says in the new video, “Has Science Discovered God?”

The first hint of Flew’s turn was a letter to the August-September issue of Britain’s Philosophy Now magazine. “It has become inordinately difficult even to begin to think about constructing a naturalistic theory of the evolution of that first reproducing organism,” he wrote.

The letter commended arguments in Schroeder’s “The Hidden Face of God” and “The Wonder of the World” by Varghese, an Eastern Rite Catholic layman.

This week, Flew finished writing the first formal account of his new outlook for the introduction to a new edition of his “God and Philosophy,” scheduled for release next year by Prometheus Press.

Prometheus specializes in skeptical thought,** but if his belief upsets people, well “that’s too bad,” Flew said. “My whole life has been guided by the principle of Plato’s Socrates: Follow the evidence, wherever it leads.”**

Last week, Richard Carrier, a writer and Columbia University graduate student, posted new material based on correspondence with Flew on the atheistic www.infidels.org Web page. Carrier assured atheists that Flew accepts only a “minimal God” and believes in no afterlife.
**
Flew’s “name and stature are big. Whenever you hear people talk about atheists, Flew always comes up,” Carrier said.** Still, when it comes to Flew’s reversal, “apart from curiosity, I don’t think it’s like a big deal.”

Quite a blow to the Abrahamic religions.

Re: World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

^ which wasn't the point the point of the article. The point was his rejection of atheism. Now I must say quite a blow to atheists.

Re: World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

True dat :bukbuk:

Re: World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

new meaning to an old saying

  1. Don’t see Evil - Changed to - We would see what we want to see
  2. Don’t speak Evil - Changed to - We would speak what suits us
  3. Don’t hear Evil - Changed - We would hear what suits us

Come on See the Article in totality. Its a pretty damning article to Abhrahmic Religions as said by Simonile.
All religion believe in GOD, so his acceptance of GOD is much smaller part of whole article.

Re: World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

^ Mabye, however, abrahamic followers dont take 'Flew' as an authority, so whether he believes in a little bit of God or alot, is hardly going to make a dent. Its a plus point either way. For the athiests however, who see him as their backbone, its a totally different matter altogether.

Re: World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

I totally agree with you Ma Mooli.
Point was just to say that if he isn't authority he isn't authority in any case, neither positive nor negative.

Re: World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

seems to me more like a big slap on the athiests face :bukbuk:

Re: World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

It is not like he became a muslim!

Re: World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

Hmmmm looks like people want to slander individuals instead of focusing on the topic which is about the** Athiests top boy** now belives in God :bukbuk:

^^ good for him
anyways i have a problem with the "level of involvement" of a deistic God. it would seem to me that the deist view says God lit a match and then sat back and watched the events unfold......intelligent design to me requires maintenance and therefore a laid-back God is kinda hard to imagine.

Re: World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

:hehe: is that what they call scraping the barrel? oh well nevermind

Re: World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

He hardly seems like the pin-up boy to be proud of when he says things like this: **“I would never regard Islam with anything but horror and fear because it is fundamentally committed to conquering the world for Islam” **and “As for Islam, it is, I think, best described in a Marxian way as the uniting and justifying ideology of Arab imperialism”.

Re: World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

hmmm so does the athiests top guy belive in god thats the question, and i think you will find the answer from the one that that should know i.e the guy himself is YeS

:p

Re: World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

hmmm so one can totally disbelieve Islam and feel it is a force for evil, and still believe in God? Interesting. That seems to go against most posts here that define God in a very narrow scope.

Re: World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

i dont get it. what are u trying to say?

Re: World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

Every soul on this earth is born a muslim, though they may be raised differently, each and every person is a potential muslim.

Re: World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

:smash: :smack2:

Re: World Renowned atheist says he believes in God!

Goof for him what? You mean his neo-racist claim that the Quranic (read “Oriental”) god is like Saddam Hussien?
