World Cup of Hockey

Canada just lost to the USA. Even though it is just a warm up, I’m worried. Could the Americans be ready to dominate the last thing on earth they don’t have - Hockey?
They got Iraq and Afghanistan already damn them.
With guys like Bill Guerin, Doug Weight, Mike Modano, Chelios, Hull…
The Americans have a decent line up. It is’nt as good as ours (canada)
But it’s close…

totally off topic… i used to think aussie was number one in every sport.. then came the olympics :bummer:

at least we still have thorpie!!

back on topic, i hope canada wins :k:

Funny you mention that
Just today I was wondering how such a small country like Australia (what is the population like 30 million) Win so many olympic metals
Oz is really good at sports

30 million? i think we r just a lil above 20million.... not very big at all..

yeah aussies have a big thing for sport.. i love the commonwealth games! we always top those..

when is the hockey world cup starting? arent the canadians in the olypmics this year (sorry... havent been paying attention to hockey)

edit: pop. of OZ --> 20,169,242

Dont worry elahi sahib. Many of the good players were not playing in the game. thts no excuse tho since that team was still better than the americans. No need to worry since canada usually doesn't start with a win in any major international tournament. (Remember salt Lake. Lost the first game against sweden but they bounced back to win every game after that).

btw, How the hell is autralia so good in every sport. I mean they got the silver medal in baseball. Do ppl down under even kno wht baseball is??? And in women's basketball aswell. Last time i checked they were unbeaten in the tournament.

Some intresting facts related to australia's performance in the olympics: In the 2000 Olympics, the United States got 97 medals,
Australia won 58 and Canada won 14. The U.S., of course, is much bigger than the other two countries. In terms of medals per capita, the U.S. actually was the worst of the three. Americans won 0.3522 medals per million people, Canada won 0.4533 medals per million, and Australia won an amazing 3.0222 medals per million (not too shabby i would say). This placed Australia fourth overall, behind the Bahamas (two medals, 6.5771 per million), Barbados (one medal, 3.7432 per million) and Iceland (one medal, 3.5969 per million).

So if ur whining abt not wiining medals n stuff, just think about wht we hav to suffer thru (tho we r doing better than the americans)

^Yeah for Canadians we can just wait till the Winter Olympics, we cand dominate that. The World Cup should be a blast. Aside from the Russians who had a bunch of players drop out, all the other teams look really strong. I gotta think besides Canada, Sweden with Forsberg, Markus Naslund, Lidstrom and Sundin look really good as well.

Can't wait!

Canada opens the series with a 2-1 win over the rival americans in their first round robin game. The score looks pretty tight but Canada was dominating the americans almost every period. If robert esche wasn't the goalie tonight than i'm sure the score wud have looked like 5-1 or something along those lines.
Also, Sweden got on to a winning start aswell by beating germany 5-2. Their star studded lines (the most balanced between veterans and youngsters in the whole tournament IMO) just totally took control of the game right from the beggining. Sundin, to the delight of leaf's fans and me aswell, scored a goal and also got 2 assists .

btw, the retro jerseys looked really nice. We shud wear that thru out the tournament.

Yeah it was a good game. Man the young Canadian lineup looked great. If it were'nt for Esche the Us would have had a shot. I though Mario played great. The guy really is one of the best players ever. At his age, I am shocked how much he still has to give.
The jerserys were cool 2. I think they wil be wearing different jerseys regulerly in this tournament. Too bad the Euro games are in teh day. I would like to watch them. There are some really good players on Russia and Sweden especially.

Ed jovo is out.. :(

mario looks like he's in great shape... did u see him against russia he was hitting like crazy... bowmeester is in now that jovo is out... man, imagine the team if we had all our D-men healthy.. pronger, blake, niedermyer, foote, jovo, redden, brewer, regher, hannan... we're stacked... even with all those guys injured theres so much depth... only thing to be worried about now is if one more defenseman goes down we're in trouble....

first of all let me welcome you back to Gupshup, I have'nt heard from you in ages. It's good to here from another guppie who enjoys the greater form of hockey, rather than that nonsense thats played on grass.
Mario is back in a big way. The guy is a phenomenol talent. Obviously one of the all time greats. One certainly wonders how he would have played and how many points he would have had if he did'nt get cancer and all thoseother injury problems.
If we had all our D we would be unbeatable. The fact we have lost most of our top line defensmen and are still favourites speaks to the depth of Canadian hockey. Personally I would have chosen a veteran like say an Eric Desjardins to add some experience (not to mention a token French player) on the back end. But I suspect things will turn out OK for Canadian hockey. Actually Canadian hockey resembles Aussie cricket domination in a lot of ways.

The title of this thread should be changed to World Cup of ICE Hockey - very misleading as it stands.
Happy WC.

^
World Cup of Hockey is the official name given to the event. The World cup of field/sissy hockey is simply known as World Cup.

eventhough i would like to see nothing better than Canadians beating the crap out of every team they face, watching the americans play the game in such a rookie way raise a thought in my mind. I mean everyone says that hockey isn't popular below the 49th and by US getting the sh!t kicked out of thier butt isn't gonna help its popularity much either. So i think that US winnnig the cup would be in the best interest of the game. That way the sport of hockey might gain the popularity that it once boasted and then US might generate some better talent to face the world in the next world cup. The talent in the NHL is gonna flourish too and we might see more goal scoring.

elahi bhai, good to hear from you too man its been a long time.... mario is unbelievable, arguably the greatest player to lace em up.... he has a higher PPG average than the great one himself....i think desjardins is out with a broken arm or something, remember he suffered that during the playoffs? depth is amazing... lets hope they kick some sputnik butt today

2-0 Canada after two periods. Man Canada's playing great hockey. Brad Richards is impressing the hell outta me. The guy is going to be a huge star. Kris Draper actually surprised me and justified his inclusion into the team with a goal.
Yeah Lyallpur Sahib, you are right.Desjardins did break his arm come to think of it.

OMG. I just totally forgot about this thread.
So newayz as most of you know, Canada is going to face Finland in the finals. Canada got to the finals by beating czech. Wow. That game was so intense. When canada scored the third goal, i was a bit relieved but when the czechs replied almost 5 seconds later with a goal of their own, i was pretty sure that canada was going to lose the game now. but im happy that vinnie lecavlier OT goal proved me wrong. I think he has given canadians something to like about him, as opposed to being hated as he was one of the major reasons flames were denied the stanley cup.

I'm looking forward to that game and hopefully canada will win it all this year.

Go Canada Go!

^That last game was unreal. the third period was a complete heart stopper the way the czechs kept rushing three men in. If Hasek was playing, I'm sure the czechs would have won. Luongo played really well, even though before the game I was hoping we would play Theodore. I was shocked at how well guys like Elias and Cejanek (average NHL'ers) were dominating. Lemieux and Lecavaleir (even though he took a bad penalty) impressed me a lot for Canada.
The final will be a dog fight. The finns have a good team, they play North American style hockey.
I'm calling it 3-1 Canada.

Yeah czechs were playing surprinsingly well for a team who got murdered in their first game of the tournament. After the round robin, they really put their A game on the table. I dont think they could have played any better. and thumbs up for roberto aswell but i honestly think Theadore could have done a better job but he has been pretty inconsistent for a long while now.
Finland, IMO, was not the second best team in the tournament but they will give Canada a run for thier money. A pretty tought bunch but not much depth if their first and second line isn't on the ice. Canada can easily score goals there.
