Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

Okay guys.

It has been 4 months since I have cooked! Can you beleive that? We have fast meals that we’ve bought from Costco that we eat and sometimes order food.

I really need help in planning what to make for dinner and when I should make it.

My family and I do not eat red meat much or at all actually.

So please help out and share your ideas and schedule for getting everything done!

Currently for us, we both work, come home around 6 pm. Feed my 1.5 yr old daughter dinner around 6:30, then play with her, get her ready for bed and in bed by 7:30. After that we eat.

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

Mostly on weekends, sometimes during the week after coming back from work. We have 1 dinner time and the little one eats whatever we are eating.

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

Lusi - what are you cooking on the weekends?
I guess i’m trying to see what are some meals i can cook in advance and store?

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

Beeamer, for the past few months I have been cooking 3-4 meals on sunday. I normally make a veggie, beef and two chicken item (or a daal.) I thought it would take me hours to finish all the cooking but it really take only maybe 2-3 hours. The time I have once I get home, during the week…I enjoy playing with my toddler or just relaxing.

I also make, fry and freeze kabob for the days when i am tried or we eat out…so i can give those for the LO to eat next day.

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

Sometimes 2 salan + 1 rice or a salan, pasta, rice, or 1salan and 1 daal. Something like that. Wetake lunch from home so I have to make a rice or pasta that we can also use for lunch. I normally make something on Wednesdays. I also always keep kababs and koftas in the freezer. Whenever I make haleem, I keep one extra serving in the fridge and freeze 2-3 servings for another time. All you have to do is move it in fridge a day earlier and heat it well the day you will consume it.

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

since you are only two adults in the house, if you cook a meal that would last you for at least two days. you can cook in advance like cook on Monday night and it should last you for Tues and wed both lunch and dinner. this way you don’t have to cook everyday.
also you can pick dishes that are easy to make. like make chicken koftas and use them in kofta pulao/biryani. freeze some koftas and next time use them in kofta curry. this way you don’t need to make it from scratch every time and also you can have variety of dishes each day.
likewise make some gola/seekh kebabs. one day you can have them in dry form with roti or bread, another day you can add some tomato & onion gravy to it, mash kebabs a little and your kebab with gravy is ready. or just make some butter rice and serve with kebabs and chatnis.
since you are not big on meat, you can also do easy dishes like veggies pulao, potato masala, pakora curry, channa pulao, etc.

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

I pressure cook lentils for dal and refrigerate them. Then the next 3-4 days I use them little by little in making dals and sambar (you can vary the tadkas each time) or sabzis like dal palak, dal methi etc. That way you’re not eating the same dish, but since the dal is pre-cooked it takes very little time to put together the food.

It really helps to plan ahead - dry legumes like chana, kala chana, raajma, whole masoor, dried peas you need to soak overnight and then pressure cook. I get this done over weekends so during the week it’s just a matter of adding tadka. Sabzis too you can clean and chop over the weekend. Desserts like semiyaan (vermicelli) kheer, sooji halwa are very quick to prepare and a good choice on busy evenings.

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

You can also bhoon qeema(chicken or beef or mutton) in bulk and divide into portions:

Make bolognese to throw in boiled pasta

making lasagne and freeze

add potatoes to make aalu keema

add any other veggies

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

I am kinda struggling with this too right now.

Both of us work and I always find myself kinda flying by the seat of my pants during the week.

I do not plan at all these days.

I guess cooking on certain days is the best way to tackle this? And enough for lunches for two people?

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays?

Weekends we tend to eat out or are invited somewhere or my mom will make something for us.

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

why dont you ladies just let us guys starve to death & build your so called careers??? … after working our asses off 9 to 5, sometimes even more, what we will get at the end of the day is freaking frozen salans … WTH

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

We also work 9-5

What is different about what you do between 9-5 and what we do between 9-5?

:cb:

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

^ Reha believe me, Sunday cooking has helped me out soo much. I am so much more relaxed during the week. I also get the meat packed in the size i need. So we aren’t wasting any food. Try it out one weekend and see.

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

Difference … ??? … Oh I forgot the gender equality thing…… whats the difference between male & female? …… are you even aware of the fact that both male & female are assigned with “different” responsibilities? ……..

If a gal can get pregnant, guy can too?
If a guy can pee while standing, gals can too no matter if they have to carry extra tool in their purse? …
If a guy wants to jump in well, gals will do that too?

no difference at all

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

You didn’t understand my question did you?

I asked you

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE WORK A WOMAN DOES AND A MAN DOES BETWEEN 9-5 WHEN BOTH ARE EMPLOYED?

Now, read the question ***carefully ***before responding.

Yes, I know a woman can get pregnant, run the house, work and has manyyyy roles in life but that only adds to her value when she ends up doing the same amount of work plus more because some men seem to forget that she’s also a human being.

Man: works 9-5
Woman: works 9-5

Whats the difference between their ***workload ***in this scenario that someone can start complaining about getting frozen meals?

If you want fresh food…apni bivi ko ghar pe bithao.

If you want her to work (because that is NOT her assigned role according to you)…make sure you’re helping her freeze on the weekends.

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

Before getting married I used to also cook on weekends for the weekdays as mostly after work I was hitting the gym but since I started working from home, I cook fresh food daily. My job is still demanding but I try to finish with all the video cons before 3 p.m and then cook, take a shower and get ready. I have to get up early for the morning meetings due to timings in Europe/India regions so I also complete most of my correspondence early in the morning.

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

I think I’ll try that out Rabia.

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

We don’t eat pasta in my house and rice only on weekends unless mom makes it or my neighbors (which are huge on cooking) send it over.

That leaves me with dishes that can be eaten alone or with roti.

I think the weekend cooking will help and I’ll be testing it out this weekend to start with:

Qeema
Chicken Karahi

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

Reha aunty ko gusssaaa lag gayaa :rotfl:

Who told you ladies to overburden yourselves? …… if your guy can provide for you then why you ladies are over doing yourselves & that too by putting your first & foremost responsibilities/duties on stake hence the complaining of frozen food ladyyyyy …. If I ma gonna get frozen baasi sara hua khaana daily, which I am already getting cuz I am single, then whats the point of getting married …. I am better off single ….

I think you dint read my question clearly either ….. I asked if you ladies are aware that both male & female are assigned with different duties but going by your above post I don’t think you are aware cuz you don’t seem to understand the difference in guys 9 to 5 work & gals 9 to 5 work……

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

Your questions are irrelevant to the discussion at hand. If you have nothing useful to contribute…its best not to.

The other thing is…lots of households are dual income. Manyyyyyyyyyyyyy families run on two salaries…your theories and advice belong to someone who has no real world experience, knowledge and obviously not married.

Re: Working Moms/Wives - how and when and what do you cook!!

you can cook once a week and freeze or refrigerate the rest. you can make burger patties, vegetable cutlets, shami kababs and freeze them. for dinner, you simply need to defrost and then grill or fry. you can also keep cooked channas, beans, lentils in the freezer. i also make chapatis and parathas and freeze them. although i dont work, i still find it much more convenient to keep these items in my freezer. i only cook once or twice a week, the rest of the week i use what i previously stored in the fridge or freezer.
