Why do people in our culture look down at a female chef/caterer/waitress? I’m planning to get an A-level equivalent course done in catering and desi people around me think I’m joking.

I think they look down more at a male chef/caterer rather than a female.
Re: working as a chef/caterer
waisay I dont know how much true it is ... my observation is .. food cooked by males is more tasty

People who don't have your best interest at heart will always find something to put you down by, so pay not attention to them. From what I've seen of your cooking, I think you'd be pretty amazing at it.
Re: working as a chef/caterer
anything service related = naukar class
hence, looked down upon by those who think they aren't naukar class.
Re: working as a chef/caterer
My very nice friend's husband who was a director at some big bank , left his his job , his career and joined a culinary institute. Yikes
One of my sisters in law wants to be a chef... She is actually been getting her training done in the last 5 months or so. Cooking is one of biggest passions & says she can't see herself doing anything but that (as a profession).
If you love cooking and want to pursue it then go for it... Who cares about what the desi community thinks of it.
Re: working as a chef/caterer
Hareem did you watch movie Julie and Julia I think , I love that movie. It's about chefs.
Re: working as a chef/caterer
Catering is awesome, being your own boss and all.

this pretty much sums it up.
Re: working as a chef/caterer
In Pakistan may be people still find it odd but I would be surprised if desis abroad have any reservation about food business.
Re: working as a chef/caterer
I personally think a job is a job at least it's honest work. I don't think any better than the guy cleaning the street.
The desi community loves judging people. If you enjoy cooking or what ever it is then pursue it at the end of the day the only person that should be satisfied is yourself.
I'm not sure about chef or caterer. But waitress, Queer summed it up perfectly.
Any job thats considered "low class" is looked down on.
Here, proper chef (educated in the field) and chaterers are pretty well respected. Not everyone can jump up and call them selves a chef of a restaurant, hotel, etc. Just like not everyone can claim to have a catering business without the proper licences and/ or education and training.
But then again, desis are desis. They'll hate on anyone who isnt a doctor, engineer, or owner of 10 gas stations.
