I am glad P J Mir is been strong at last. I can imagine not speaking like this in Jamaica would have been difficult.

Woolmer ‘match-fix’ claims rejected

Pakistan’s cricket team has rejected speculation that the death of their coach Bob Woolmer was linked to match-fixing, and stressed the close relationship he had with his players.

Woolmer was described as a “father figure” to the team, which was staying in London before their planned flight home to Lahore on Tuesday.

Team spokesman Pervez Mir spoke several times to defend the squad’s reputation and their relationship with Woolmer, and stressed his belief no player was involved in his murder.

Mr Mir also complained that the team was being “kept in the dark” about their coach’s death, after his body was found in his Kingston hotel room last Sunday morning, just hours after Pakistan lost a crucial World Cup match to Ireland. He had been strangled.

Speaking outside their hotel in London, Mr Mir said: “He was more than a coach, he was more like a father figure. He used to help the boys and now that he’s not here to defend himself, I think it’s unfair that there’s an unjust media trial.”

He added: "When a man has been murdered, to divert a murder inquiry into a match-fixing inquiry, that’s not fair, because we have to find the killers, then we will know what happened.

“To bring up the murky world of match-fixing, I think it’s not the right thing, and not the right time.”

Mr Mir also dismissed the suggestion relations between Woolmer and Pakistani captain Inzaman ul-Haq had been strained, insisting they were actually “wonderful”.

Asked in an earlier interview with BBC Radio 5 Live whether he believed any players were involved in the murder, he insisted: “Absolutely not.”

He added that the team were not being singled out by police because the West Indies, Zimbabwe and Ireland players and other guests who were also in the hotel had all been questioned.

^ But again he failed to tell the media that DNA samples had also been taken from Lara and the entire WI, Zimbabwe and Ireland squads. That's something he should have stressed to the media IMO.

More twists to this farce. The latest from SKY is Jamaican police want to speak to 4 Pakistani fans who were staying at the Pegasus hotel.

^ well it is natural for them to want to speak to all the guests.

The should hold one press conference a day and thats pretty much it rather than commissioner coming in front of media 2-3 times a day and ending with "we dont know yet...or we are not confirmed yet"

Pakistan no longer suspects in Woolmer case

Pakistan’s players have been ruled out as suspects in the murder of Bob Woolmer, according to the deputy commissioner of Jamaican police. Mark Shields, the detective in charge of the murder case, said: "It’s fair to say they are now being treated as witnesses.

“I have got no evidence to suggest it was anybody in the squad,” he said in Australia’s the Herald Sun. “There is still a very strong possibility that [Woolmer] knew the person or persons.”

Shields said the players could be ordered back to the West Indies if the situation changed, but there are two diplomats from Pakistan’s Washington embassy representing the squad in Jamaica. “[The diplomats] were taken to the crime scene for the first time today,” Shields said. Pakistan left the Caribbean on Saturday and stopped over in London on their way home after exiting the World Cup in the first round.

CCTV footage from the 12th floor of the Pegasus Hotel is expected to help the investigators, who have started viewing the tapes of the day Woolmer was strangled. Jeff Rees, the ICC anti-corruption chief investigator, is expected to look at the report of Chris Broad, the ICC match referee, from the Ireland-Pakistan match to determine whether there is any link between the result and Woolmer’s death a day later.

Lara & Co. didn't get fingerprinted as per the media reports we've been getting.

we can also count NZ in there. They successfully chased down 2 consecutive 350+ totals against the Aussies recently.

Some Indian channels are calling these suspects and already gave names of these guys, one of em being Afridi's friend.

Detectives investigating the murder of Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer have made an international appeal to all those who stayed in or visited the Pegasus Hotel in the two or three days before Woolmer’s death to come forward with any relevant information they may have.
Mark Shields, Jamaica’s deputy police commissioner, said that they had set up a 24-hour international hotline for anyone with information about the murder of Woolmer, who was found strangled in his hotel room on March 18. Shields said police are yet to make a significant breakthrough and were anxious to hear from anyone who had been at the hotel during the 72 hours before Woolmer’s body was discovered.
“What I need to do is to identify everybody in the hotel from Friday through to Sunday when Bob’s body was found, in an effort to establish everybody’s movements during that period of time,” said Shields. "Not just as suspects but as potential witnesses - people who may have heard something, seen something within the hotel that raised their suspicions, that so far they haven’t come forward with.
“The important thing is that we get to those people and give them an opportunity to come forward and talk to us,” said Shields. “Nothing can be overlooked in a case like this.” Shields urged anyone who had since returned home from the World Cup to dial the international hotline (+1-876-927-5000) or contact their local police. “You can call the number 24/7 to give information. If you don’t want to call internationally, call your local police if you’re now back at home in your own country.”
Shields said police would not rush the result of toxicology tests carried out on Woolmer’s body which have been ongoing for over a week. “I spoke to the leader of the forensic laboratory this morning,” Shields said. “She assured me they would work as quickly as they can. I asked her how long will it take and she answered ‘When it’s ready.’ I have to respect their professionalism and wait until they tell me they have the results.”

Re: WOOLMER'S MURDER

I just have one question to Mr. Shields. since he has made a case of murder by asphyxiation,it simply means that someone or more than one person grab Bob's neck so hard that it did break his neck without leaving any marks on Mr. woolmers neck which could'nt be recognized on the first inspection at the autopsy.how in the world this could happen. how about a more simple explaination that he probably had an arrythmia or massive heart attack which made him fall unconsciously resulting in fracture of his neck. Someone is definately catching in on another opportunity to defame Pakistan and its cricket team. imagine if this has happened to Australian coach, would they have labeled Australian team as the suspect.

Re: WOOLMER'S MURDER

^ did anyone name pakistan team as suspect? I don't think so
