Return of the housewife? A new survey suggests most women would prefer to be at home with the children

Most women still prefer to marry a man who earns more money than they do and would stay at home with their children if they could afford it, according to a survey published yesterday.
Despite years of equality campaigning and advances for women in the workplace, 64 per cent said they aspire to find a husband who brings home a larger pay packet than they do. None wanted to marry a man who earned less.
And 69 per cent said they would prefer to stay at home to look after their children if money were not an issue.
Only 19 per cent wanted their other half to be better educated than they are. Instead 62 per cent said they wanted a man to have the same level of intellect.
Thirty-one per cent thought they were better educated than their other halves, while 19 per cent thought their husbands were better educated.
The survey follows controversial research published last week by Dr Catherine Hakim of the London School of Economics, which claimed more women are choosing to ‘marry up’ by picking wealthy men for their spouse than in the 1940s. In her report, published by the Centre for Policy Studies think-tank, she said men dominate the top positions because women do not want careers in business.
She also criticised David Cameron for backing the idea of quotas to ensure that leading companies appointed more women to their boards.
The research, which drew on existing data from Britain and Spain, showed that 20 per cent of British women married husbands with a significantly better education than their own in 1949.

By the 1990s, the percentage of women deciding to ‘marry up’ had climbed to 38 per cent – with a similar pattern repeated in the rest of Europe, the U.S. and Australia.
The report concluded that equal roles in the family, where husband and wife shared employment, childcare and housework, was ‘not the ideal sought by most couples’.
Now a YouGov survey of 922 women, aged between 18 and 65, which was conducted for the Sunday Times last week, has backed Dr Hakim’s claims.
It comes after a series of measures announced by the Coalition intended to decrease the pay difference between women and men.
Of the women polled by YouGov, 62 per cent said their husbands earned more than them. Only 16 per cent earned more than their husbands while 18 per cent earned the same. Four per cent said they didn’t know what their husbands earned.

Wouldn't anyone want a rich spouse that would allow them to spend more time with family? It's just more socially acceptable for women, but it shouldn't be surprising.

actully this reaserch was only abt money so all will say yes yes more money! just compared little bit with education...
so not abt women abt all human...they prefer more money-more education-more kind-& extreme to any good sence they wish more(i mean for having with their own not in marriage only)

so as its suppose that husband according his age is more be more educated or more rich so all will prefer it same as no one will say i want a bad guy or all want a true lover!

so it didnt need research ppl always wish the best but if u compare that which features r more important & then women will say less educate-less love & etc but money should be so much so then we can discuse why women want rich hubby!

but i know mostly girls seek for a lover that earn accordingly & his education will be match with them(same or upper) but if he is so rich then they feel wowwww.....but hardly i see women who marry someone whom they dont like but cuz he is so rich!

Reminds me of a anecdote that took place in my own lifetime. A very beautifull woman was unfortunatle the cause of a personal rivalry between two guys who were both from the same town. Trouble was the Rich lad was very pompous and had a gambling addiction that he managed to keep sort of hidden from his fammily. While the other lad was obviously poorer but was cousin to the richer one, unfortunatley his father had passed away while he was very young and this made him very emotional and sensitive to many things especially religoin, he was as close as I ever knew a man to be a Saint.

Anyway the girls fammily married her off to the rich fellow despite warnings from the community about the lecherous behavior of the lad. Later it was found out he not only loved gambling but had many affairs and dealt with many we would call criminals. The poor girl was divorced and lost custody of her children after she went to court and lost the case becuase the chap she married claimed her to be a nuttcase....

As for the man who lost out in the game of love, he never married in his life, he was very generous and I remember him possesing a great mind he remembered things better than anyone I can think of... he knew the number plates to every taxi in town by heart, he was Quran hafiz and while he was deeply religous you would not think him a molvi type if you saw him... he was clean shaven and very westernised in dress and business manner.

When he passed away recently he left his Taxi driver friend over 300,000 pounds in his will becuase the Taxi driver simply took him to hospital on his last day. I knew him as an eccentric of sorts but he lost his parents a long time ago and had no siblings or children.

As for the fellow who was the gambler he went on to be sent to prison becuase of his gambling debts and supposed criminal connections. I wonder if the fammily of the girl had looked at the persona of the lads more closely who would they have chosen.

Result is that whilst a man may be rich what garuntee is thier that he is going to stay that way...?

If the personality is vain or reckless than even a kings ransom can be wasted on drink and pleasure.

But if the personality is rich than endless wealth can still be attained.

At least that is my belief, and with that thought I would advise both Men and Women to consider rishta's with a more serious heart and mind.

We Desis were once famed for thinking from the heart not the mind, todays material world is never going to conquer your heart deep down and you all know it.

Choose what you think is best but do not be fooled by riches or looks becuase these can fade, but a persons true persona never fades charm remains even after death. I wonder if that poor lad who grew up to be a carpet merchant and then a master of a business empire will be remembered as a modern day Majnoo... allready he has changed many peoples lives. I can only pray for the soul of my lost friend and hope Allah will reward him and give him the peace he did not find in this world. Ameen.
