The Prophet said, "I looked at Paradise and saw that the majority of its residents were the poor; and I looked at the (Hell) Fire and saw that the majority of its residents were women."
51% or like 99%? Don't know do you...
Needless to say, what is more important was the occasion in which said hadith was reported to have been spoken. I'll let you do the homework...
I am perfectly aware of the context, for those who are not:
Volume 7, Book 62, Number 125:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abbas:
During the lifetime of Allah's Apostle, the sun eclipsed. Allah's Apostle offered the prayer of (the) eclipse) and so did the people along with him. He performed a long Qiyam (standing posture) during which Surat-al-Baqara could have been recited; then he performed a pro-longed bowing, then raised his head and stood for a long time which was slightly less than that of the first Qiyam (and recited Qur'an). Then he performed a prolonged bowing again but the period was shorter than the period of the first bowing, then he stood up and then prostrated. Again he stood up, but this time the period of standing was less than the first standing. Then he performed a prolonged bowing but of a lesser duration than the first, then he stood up again for a long time but for a lesser duration than the first. Then he performed a prolonged bowing but of lesser duration than the first, and then he again stood up, and then prostrated and then finished his prayer. By then the sun eclipse had cleared. The Prophet then said, "The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah, and they do not eclipse because of the death or birth of someone, so when you observe the eclipse, remember Allah (offer the eclipse prayer)." They (the people) said, "O Allah's Apostle! We saw you stretching your hand to take something at this place of yours, then we saw you stepping backward." He said, "I saw Paradise (or Paradise was shown to me), and I stretched my hand to pluck a bunch (of grapes), and had I plucked it, you would have eaten of it as long as this world exists. Then I saw the (Hell) Fire, and I have never before, seen such a horrible sight as that, and I saw that the majority of its dwellers were women." The people asked, "O Allah's Apostle! What is the reason for that?" He replied, "Because of their ungratefulness." It was said. "Do they disbelieve in Allah (are they ungrateful to Allah)?" He replied, "They are not thankful to their husbands and are ungrateful for the favors done to them. Even if you do good to one of them all your life, when she seems some harshness from you, she will say, "I have never seen any good from you.' "
*Book 004, Number 1926: *
Jabir b. 'Abdullah reported: I observed prayer with the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) on the 'Id day. He commenced with prayer before the sermon without Adhan and Iqama. He then stood up leaning on Bilal, and he commanded (them) to be on guard (against evil for the sake of) Allah, and he exhorted (them) on obedience to Him, and he preached to the people and admonished them. He then walked on till he came to the women and preached to them and admonished them, and asked them to give alms, for most of them are the fuel for Hell. A woman having a dark spot on the cheek stood up and said: Why is it so, Messenger of Allah? He said: For you grumble often and show ingratitude to your spouse. And then they began to give alms out of their ornaments such as their earrings and rings which they threw on to the cloth of Bilal.
Now, unless you’re going to tow the illogical line that the only way women enter hell is 'cause of spousal issues, it’s clear that the statement (which was rather specific and singular) was intended to the particular female members of the congregation who had serious atttitude problems.
Spousal issues is definitely not the only “way to enter hell”, but it’s important to realize that it is indeed one of them. Like you said, it only applies to “female members with serious attitude problems”.
Women are ungrateful to their husbands and are ungrateful for the favours and the good (charitable) deeds done to them. If you have always been good (benevolent) to one of them and then she sees something in you (not of her liking), she will say, 'I have never received any good from you."
thankx skhan. ansoon u can clearly see its religious and not cultural...
But the hadith is specific. It ONLY mentions wives who ill treat their husbands. I'm afraid if I'm to use your paradigm of interpretations, I can't allow that line of argument. It either is meant as a check to a very sepecific group of people, or it's universal. The context allows for no other interpretation.
Happily, a little bit of logic and understanding make things clear...to those who want to think, of course...

Members being members of the specific congregation, i.e. those who were being addressed.
It's cultural in the sense that the hadith is approached with severe cultural bias, and is obviously twisted and contorted to support something that is not at all the purpose of the message recorded in the hadith in the first place.
Yes the hadith is specific to wives who mistreat their husbands. Yes it was applied to a specific group of people. Using your logic, the Quran was only revealed to the people alive at the time of the prophet (pbuh). Also the majority of the Quran is addressed to the prophet (pbuh). That should just be taken out since it’s obsolete now?
Why was Ibleees created? he is the reason we are here on this earth adn suffering.. My soul would have been some where up in skies having fun right now. but i am sitting here in front of my stupid laptop and writing this with billion issues in my head...
