I do indeed love dark humour as much as any other Brit, but really, even myself fails to understand exactly what is so funny about a man being repeatedly kicked, punched and pushed by a woman without any apparent provocation? Yes, I’m talking about Jay Z and Solange Knowles’ recent incident which for some pathetic reasons have become a butt of every joke on social media. I’m appalled that people are feeling so amused and entertained by the whole incident, vast majority of the commentators are more concerned about Beyonce’s post incident paparazzi smiles than condemning the violence that took place in the elevator.
Now if you reserve the roles and imagine if it was Jay Z who attacked Solange in the manner she did? He would’ve been behind the bars by now with the entire Western World crying shock horror asking that woman beater’s head.
Frankly speaking Beyonce’s self satisfying ‘Slut Walk’ feminism and her husband’s proud objectification of women in his rap lyrics sickens me, both are equally bad in my eyes. but I must say that my estimation of Jay Z has increased by couple of notches. He was perfectly entitled to return the favour as self defence, he probably could’ve given her a broken wrist or an arm or a broken nose if he wanted to. But he chose to pick up Solanag’s purse from the floor and handed it back to her sister, at the end. No man half his size can ever dare to go up to Jay Z, assault him without expecting to get beaten up, and possibly snapped into half. So I don’t understand why he’s the one being made fun of?
The incident has effectively exposed society’s hypocrisy on domestic violence. The hypocrisy that fails to acknowledge that almost 40% of the victims of domestic violence are men. And because many people people find the idea of man being beaten up by a woman so amusing and perplexing, is one of the main reasons why it often goes unreported.
Not going to lie, some of the memes were funny but I totally agree with you and that’s what I thought when I saw the clip. Respect for Jayz to tolerate that. Whatever the reason was, Solange should be ashamed.. there is never a need for violence, men and women alike.
Jolie and Sweefs - well said. There is hypocrisy out there and society continues to allow it.
Here’s another question - is violence ever justified? When is a slap or a shove or push acceptable? I’ve always lived by the principle of zero-tolerance, but could the physical aggressor ever be pushed so far that they retaliate physically? And when I say being pushed - pushed via the words and conduct of the other person - but no need for self-defense?
I’ve thought about this. I think in such cases a person is expected to remove him/herself from the situation/room as soon as possible. Self control and restraint isn’t too much to expect from anyone in my opinion.
^ I imagine one of those impassioned moments where a man accuses a woman of infidelity or some other moral crime or a woman insults a man’s parents - I would call these fighting words and question is it always possible to remove yourself from the situation and not give in to an impassioned physical reaction?
I’d like to think I would walk away - but for the people who don’t and their knee-jerk reaction is physical - wouldn’t there be more tolerance and the justification that the other person drove them to it?
Yeah, i agree that each individual has a different level of aggression but to me, those who have a higher level of it should just exercise a higher level of restraint.
I just don’t think there is a justification for a grown adult to not exhibit self control i guess.
Just reverse the roles, if Jay-Z had done what Solange did in the elevator, everyone would lose their mind and probably by now he would be giving a public apology and God knows what else.
^ yes, and a lot of people are saying that he must have done something (cheating) why would she attack him without ‘valid’ reason otherwise.
There would have been no ‘valid’ reason had it been a man attacking a woman had she cheated on him.
I’m sure some guys would find the fact that Rihanna threw Christ Brown’s car keys away (some big shot car, which I can’t remember) a valid reason as well but no body says that out loud
(^I’m not justifying anything Chris did, I’m just saying the world is twisted)
So the theory is, Jay Z cheats and Solange is more offended by it than Beyonce? Am not buying that. Solange is just a violent person; her history bears it out. Who knows what ticked her off. She is no different than a violent guy and yes she is getting a free pass coz she is a woman.
I don’t particularly like Jay Z’s music, but as a person he is a classy guy. A couple of years ago there was a video of him riding the subway to an arena to do a show, where he met an old woman who didn’t know who he was. He was so gracious and kind to her. In spite of all the jokes in social media, am sure a lot of people like him more because of this incident.
Solange: This elevator is not going anywhere.
Jay Z: Neither is your career.
Solange: :faris:
^ Heard this on the radio.
Jokes aside, well said, Jolie and sweefs. Regardless of the reason for the hitting, media response would have been much different if the roles were reversed.
Honestly, I was roaring at the memes, and I did find them funny. and yes, even though I’m wondering myslef the story behind this abuse, I know that if the roles were reversed, no one would dare question a woman, no one would say, “what did she do to deserve it?” at least not without some sort fo backlash.
This, thank you. We all agree that she shouldn’t have hit him but then people go on to defend her actions. Condemn her like you would a guy hitting a woman, no excuses. If you actually look and notice, there is a lot of “soft” misandry that exists in Western culture, but just because it’s not overt doesn’t mean it isn’t harmful.
And to keep it trashy, of Snooki getting punched. I think both women got what they deserved. Don’t hit another person, and don’t mouth off in someone’s face when they’re twice your size.
