Re: With a Q
I'd lay my bets on "Ku" for that.
Re: With a Q
in arabic, is it pronounced kwa-ran, ko-ran, or kuh-ran?
while we're on the subject, is muslim correctly pronounced muss-lim or muhs-lim (again in arabic)?
am I correct in thinking that Islam is pronouced iss-lahm?
I agree w/Lajawab that the correct thing to do would be to decide on an officially accepted english spelling of arabic words. As usual though, he just comes across as being sanctimonius.
BTW Lajo, why do you think it is that your Islamic history and civilization class was filled to capacity?
Re: With a Q
Q has many different ways of pronunciation...Multiple phonemes which would include the 'Qaaf' of Arabic...
K has a single phoneme, meaning only one way of pronouncing it...Unless accompanied by another consonant like Know, Khaarish e.t.c...
So Q it is...
It was filled to capacity, Stu, because not all Americans are like the ones on this Bulletin Board...
There are actually many who wish to know and learn apart from what Fox and CNN tell them...
Re: With a Q
brother Lajawab :k:
Yeah, tell them it is Queen of Great Britain and not Kween of Great Britain.

At times wrong pronunciation of qaaf & kaaf can be quite funny.
Kalb = Dog and Qalb = Heart
Pronounced wrongly the following can mean quite embarrassing.
“I love you with all my heart” (Qalb) pronounced with ‘K’
“His dog is black” (Kalb) pronounced with ‘Q’
Re: With a Q
care to back this up with an example? as far as i know, native english speakers have just one way of way of doing Q - the Kw’ sound.
Re: With a Q
^^
But we Muslims know what the Q stands for...So what if Angrez can't pronounce it like us...
K can't be made into a 'Qaaf'...K has no connotation of the throat popping that acompanies a 'Qaaf'...
We use K as a 'Kaaf'...Like Kaleem, Kalam...But for 'Qaaf' we use Q like Qalam, Qaleen, Qulb...
Re: With a Q
so you are saying, you will reassign sounds to the english alphabet and then nitpick over people trying to go with the original sounds or other possible variants? wow..
Re: With a Q
Queer, no one is going to lock you in a jail for writing Qur'an as Koran...But someone will nitpick...It's natural...
If however, despite all rectifications and clarifications and explanations, one still intends to persevere with bullheadedness, then so be it...
Ask you next door neighbours; The Qapoor family...
Re: With a Q
In english, which is what we’re talking about here, Q alone has the same pronounciation as “k”, Q accompanied by u is prounounced “kw” and is the most common usage. Do you want to answer my pronounciation questions or not?
They are in the class for the same reason that me and other “avg amreekans” come to Gupshup, to try and understand muslim’s motivation(s) for committing terrorist acts.
I’m no statitician, but I’d say the probability of you sharing your views with your classmates on america, OBL etc… are about as close to zero as you can get. You keep your jihadi views in closet.
Re: With a Q
^^
The teacher handed out pamphlets of OBL's reasons for war against America...And I was asked to comment on it as a Muslim...I think I pretty much did a good job of explaining my views...
The teacher was a Palestinian Christian with family in Palestine and a couple of books under his belt...
He was pro-Palestinian and you would not have liked him for his views...
Re: With a Q
Yeah, sure you did. If you shared your true views it would look like a jerry springer show in there. They’d take you down faster than those british airlines passengers took down richard reid, lol.
Re: With a Q
Stu...
There were students in that class willing to listen to the 'other' side...
There were no rednecks or inbred hicks in that class...
Re: With a Q
you know, coming from a country where cousin marriages are the norm, that inbred comment is quite funny.
Re: With a Q
Brother…
Their Kalb may be black but let’s hope their Qalb becomes white…![]()
Re: With a Q
well, there was at least one intolerant bigot that I could name…
btw, do you have that “Osama the Terminator” poster that you posted in the images gallery soon after 9-11 hanging in your dorm room?
Re: With a Q
Actually I was mistaken on which Osama-worshipping thread was yours. This is the one I was referring to in which you call OBL “The Sublime Mujahid”, “your herrow” (which is pretty amusing, considering this thread is about spelling) and also call him “a pretty good looking guy too”. ![]()

Any chance you said these things to your American classmates?
Re: With a Q
Stu,
Bin Laden is the promised messiah for wahabies. they love him. and yet they have the audacity to call Ahmadis kaffir.
Re: With a Q
sad but true
Re: With a Q
The name Mohammad can be spelled in many different ways as can ahmad. However, people tend to use the most common way to spell it. Nothing wrong with that is there? In fact most names can be spelled in several differnt ways- however it saves confusion and is easier if people stick to the most commom manner. As for spelling Quran with a Q, same applies.
When reading Quran, or speaking Arabic, it is very true that meanings can change if you don’t use the exact word/letter and pronounce it exactly right.
However using names or words such as masjid or mosque is quite normal.
Frankly, I don’t see the big deal Ahmed Gee. :o
