Re: Wish you all a Happy Ugadi/Gudipadava
^ you're actually a Stateist :ASA:
Haha :D
You coined a new term.
I guess it is not religious new year but a regional one.
Happy new year to you folks
People from some parts of the world Chineese , Egyption, Iranian do make a point in celebrating their own regional newyear celebration. It is a good practice. Makes you more intune with local culture and regional identity.
Btw, what year it is ?

hey all you kannada speakers, I might be going to Bangalore this year…yippee!
somebody let me know how you say:
“give me that”
“please show me that lengha”
hopefully they’ll understand me with my amrikan accent:Dthanku
Re: Wish you all a Happy Ugadi/Gudipadava
SOA, u speak good kannada! the bangalore variety is always sweet to listen to. half my family speaks the blr variety and my dad’s side speak the hubli variety. as for me, though i can understand kannada quite well, my spoken kannada is kinda rusty.
indopak, if you’re going to blr and need any help with choosing hotels/renting cars for the day, where to eat, where to shop, etc.. pm me. vaisay unless u’re going around in a rickshaw, u won’t need much kannada in blr, it’s so cosmo now.
victory
i didn’t know u were still around here! good to see u!
Re: Wish you all a Happy Ugadi/Gudipadava
thanks Nimko:) but my family is planning the whole trip so they've done all that and they've been there a couple times. I know I can speak in english everywhere in India but I want to blend in with everybody else there.
Re: Wish you all a Happy Ugadi/Gudipadava
^there is no way you can blend. somehow all shopkeepers and vendors know you're from abroad.
I think it's because when you walk you nod at people - they don't do that there
you smile at vendors when you but - that confuses them because they're used seeing people look grim when handing out money
you say thank you for everything - they go "vaaat ees this? dont say thankyou quuenque for this"
Re: Wish you all a Happy Ugadi/Gudipadava
yeah and u'd be hard pressed to find someone who is actually kannada if you're staying at a hotel... hotel staff, restaurant staff, etc are quite likely to be northies themselves. have fun.
getting back to topic, in maharashtra gudi padva is celebrated, although at my home the feast is prepared in carnatic tradition: something sweet, something bitter, something sour, something spicy, to signify the different facets of life. there is the traditional crushed neem leaves mixed with jaggery. then Mum makes puran poli, which is a sweet paratha. we also have rice and mung dal khichri, and karela curry. the curry is bitter because of the karela, sweet because of the jaggery in it, sour because of tamarind, and spicy due to red mirch. eaten altogether, it's a tasty preparation.

Like stircrasy said, wouldn't you get jipped by the stores/vendors when you don't know the local language. I know i'll definitely get jipped once I go alone to one of those markets and I open my mouth:@:
Re: Wish you all a Happy Ugadi/Gudipadava
am I the one slapping you? Oh then it’s ok:D
I was joking yaaaar ![]()
Re: Wish you all a Happy Ugadi/Gudipadava
:CareBear: I do all this every time I go to India…it just comes naturally.
rickshaw wallahs look the cutest when I thank them after they drop us off.
biggest fear is getting jipped by everybody, other than that, I can speak my native language and hindi so hopefully I won’t be totally lost.:halo:
let’s get back on the topic of Ugadi yaars!!

Re: Wish you all a Happy Ugadi/Gudipadava
Ofcourse, bangalore kannada is completely different, kind of slang compared to other northern karnataka districts.
Well i love it coz its slang and it has a completely different accent especially compared to hindi and english.
I picked up or rather confess forced to learn kannada. I could only read and write and mug all the answers i hated kannada.
But during college days i was forced to learn, as kannada was never a medium of communication esp in a cosmopolitan city like bangalore.
Funny part is you speak to rik drivers in kannada they are so damn happy though i completely agree, bangalore is a cosmo city now.
