US may strike in Fata - which they already do by drones. Full scale invasion of Pakistan is not possible for US. in the longer run that task will i guess be assigned to India while areial and tactical support from US from the western borders. Before that they will be preparing more scenarios for war. instability within Pakistan will be key and they are heavily reallying on that.
Looking back, US hasnt faught a direct war with a country with real Army since WWII. Iraq, Afghanistan armies were non existent. Even going into Iraq, they made sure in 10 years that if it has some left over WMD's via sanctions and inspections. Once that done, they moved in with ease!
They will be following similar tactics with slight difference, there may be another media catching event, that will trigger sanctions on Pakistan first including no fly zone, coupled with more covert operations by India/CIA and sold out agents in Pakistan, once they are very sure of hitting hard and deviding the country, they will attack!
Thats only if they wish to attack Pakistan at all!
weak points on Pakistan end is its economy and government.
Full scale attack on Pakistan is out of the question for quite a long time!

Oh..you want pakistan to attack the haqqani network…so that all Talibans start fighting with pakistan…like that wouldn’t be a suicide 
The americans would at max, carry out aerial bombing of North Waziristan…followed by Strict Economic Sanctions on Pakistan…and that was expected of them…that before leaving they would do it again…like the previous times…to put in place sanctions…

I agree with CM and Shak Kills, a direct attack immediately is not going to happen. India CANNOT participate in direct attacks, at max India can play the role Pakistan played against Afghanistan i.e. provide logistics/bases to US to carry out attacks. For now they will continue to play the dirty game they have been playing for last few years but probably extend their zone to other FATA agencies.
For the record, China will not be able to stop US invasion IF they build (forceful) consensus like they did for Iraq.

I do not agree with those who believe that America cannot attack Pakistan because the cost is too high militarily
As we saw in the 1990/2000, the US economy is so strong that it can wage wars in 2-3 different places and still have a GDP/head of US$ 40,000+/- (still one of the highest in the world)
It won't which is a separate matter. They would probably expand air strike target regions in Pakistan beyond FATA to Southwesten Baluchistan province. This is primarily a pressure tactic on their part to get the Pak government and military to act against Haqqani network

Imperial power have it figured out from a very long time as to which area is invade able and which area requires alternate strategies of control..........Britain in the last century conquered the whole of Indian subcontinent with a handful of soldiers...........thru the art of 'divide and rule'...........today USA will too exert pressure on Pakistan through various political techniques and blackmail but never thru direct direct military intervention.......

I don't know if they will attack now or not.. the US elections are coming and the current government needs a drama before that. Yes there is a likelihood..
If God forbid another major terrorist attack happens now, with the current euphoria being created against Pakistan.. there will be so much public pressure on the current US government that they will have to attack Pakistan. I don't think it will be a matter of choice anymore for the current US leadership.
I really don't understand people who think there is no possibility. There is a very strong possibility of US attacking Pakistan. Our ghairat brigade lives in illusions regarding the military capabilities of Pakistan. Also we have to understand that there is a global consensus against terrorism, and there is no doubt that Pakistan is the major home for all the terrorist related groups in the world, with or without the official backing of our establishment.
The very serious question for Pakistan is that is it in our national interest to be against the whole world opinion. People who think any other nation in the world will come to stand with us in any situation like war live in an illusion. Do we really have to follow the ghairat brigade in our country and suffer a huge economic and collateral damage. We need to act really with caution and sense must prevail at this moment. Our priority should be the economic well-being of the country than protecting or refusing to act against any sort of terrorist outfits of what-so-ever type...

Even if US does not attack Pakistan outright, Pakistan will suffer. It will work first to isolate Pakistan internationally - you know how well they can do that - this combined with loss of military aid will hurt. US is in win-win situation here, if Pakistan takes action against these terrorist, they win, if Pakistan refuses, US will blame Pakistan for Afgan mess and leave, but not before making a bigger mess in Pakistan and isolating it. With the situation like that, whatever strategic advantage Pakistan hoping to gain in Afghanistan will be neuteralized. At no cost, US will leave Afgan with Pakistan firmly entrenched in it, not when China is hovering around.
On the other hand by taking care of the terrorists both Pak and US win. Use of terrorism as a strategic weapon is old fashioned, economic and cultural leverage are the best way to go about. With geographic position and a huge Phustun population, it is easier to achieve.

But the difference is the leaders of Iraq and Afghanistan were courageous. Just because Pakistan has nuclear and a big army dos not mean anything. We have seen how the army struggles in FATA.
Can Pakistan win any war under coward leaders like Kayani? People criticise Zardari for selling Pakistan off but what about the military? Pakistan's military academies should be producing men who have valour, integrity, who would protect the nation form any threat, whose every single citizen is seen as precious yet they end up producing leaders like Musharaf and Kayani who bow to US pressure, who hand over Pakistan to the US at will, who allow to kill hundreds of innocent Pakistanis with drone strikes. All they care about is their retirement benefits, the over- bloated military budget which puts a small minority which cant even do its job before the majority, the money they make during their rule and after.
Would Musharaf or Kayani ever die fighting like Saddam?
A lot of people here live in a fools paradise judging by the comments. The US does not need to invade Pakistan. It is already a subservient state.
All it would have to do is increase the pressure and hting would get much worse. Our military and democratic leaders are so hell bent on US Aid that they oculd do anything for it.
The whole elite culture of Pakistan is wrong and anti-Pakistan. Does anyone remmeber 1971?

I believe that the people of the Indian sub-continent will always be like this. They have for most of their time been ruled by outsiders. I doubt that either India or Pakistan would ever put up a good fight if invaded by any other outsiders.
They both have nuclear and big armies yet by now they both had many reasons to delcare war on each other. For all the accusations India throws at Pakistan i doubt any other country would have tolerated so much. They constantly blame everything on Pakistan yet dare do little about it. India will only dare when another country starts something. Maybe the US/NATO knows the weakness of the country to the east of Pakistan.
As for Pakistan for 60 plus years they have cried over Kashmir. India is never going to give Kashmir to Pakistan or accept its independence. If Pakistan really wanted Kashmir they would have gone to fight over it by now.
I suppose their cowardliness is a result of the fact that they both wont make life easier for the majority who are poor. Greed is an incurable disease.

The US indeed have another two options at least:
a) Leave Pakistan alone and get on with focussing on their domestic issues
b) Make friends with Pakistan praising them for their help and support and turn on anyone who says otherwise
Why should the US only have negative ways to deal with Pakistan?
(For the record I don't expect US to take the nice approach, but hey they need to be told that the nice approach are valid options to take)
Peace however does not fuel the US economy.

Yeah ... just like the US army ... Indian and Pakistani armies have sussed out that if the threat is sustained on both sides then the GDP allocations of their respective countries will continue feeding their officers and lining their pockets with more cash ...

Again the conventional wisdom is as follows:
- They are pulling out of Iraq this year.
- They are pulling out 30,000 troops out of Afghanistan next year.
They are not going to send in more troops to a third country that is armed with nukes and that has a military that considers MAD an acceptable consequence.
