Why?

Re: Why?

yes this use of Pasha is also shown in PTV dramas, when they made dramas around Hyderabadi families. Bhabhi Pasha is familiar to me :)

Re: Why?

My Big Fat Hyderabadi family nicknamed my husband “Pasha” when we got married… :cb:

My khaloo exclusively calls him that…my very non-Hyderabadi husband was like “WTF???” at first, now it’s grown on him :rotfl:

Re: Why?

I think Pasha (Basha) had a persian origin of Padshah (Badshah).

Re: Why?

Actually in turkish Pasha means high ranked officer....

You must remember Mohammad Ali Pasha of egypt who fought against wahabi fighter...during ottomon rule...

Re: Why?

Pasha is definately a Turkish name for Officer.

Re: Why?

:hmmm: So the term was imported from Turkey into India via Iran

Re: Why?

Correct :D

Re: Why?

So that makes the lady from Hyderabad Mrs. Khatti Pasha

Re: Why?

I think so, however Pasha is an exculsively male name originally, then again so was Khan and we all know what happened with that.

Re: Why?

Aurangzeb is a good name, btw… :snooty:

maybe you can name your son porus?

Re: Why?

What about Bipasha?

Re: Why?

Marvi, and Sassi were muslim or non muslim characters? Both and especially Marvi is a very common name in Sindh.

Re: Why?

In this nanotech age microporus or mesoporus has a nice ring to it.

Re: Why?

any one remember Maxim Gorki's "Mother' where the mother her son as pasha...............:@:

Re: Why?

I think instead of looking at the victors and achievements we should look at the the "cause" of the people ... and where their cause is not known then people invoke their "legendary status" ...

By focusing on the "cause" of persons within history you will see people who aligned with those causes named their children with the names of their heroes. Otherwise in the case of Alexander whose "cause" is unknown but his legend known want to celebrate that by naming their children accordingly.

There are only a handful of reasons why people name their children as they do ... It is not a difficult question to answer ... think about if you have a son or a daughter why you would name them with that name.

Re: Why?

:hmmm: not a bad idea, but may be your Bhabhi won’t agree on this name.

Re: Why?

Bipasha is Bengali version of Padshah :D

Re: Why?

Good point.

I’m yet to hear name ‘Bullha’ from those who love Bulleh Shah’s poetry.

There was a colleague of mine, who named his sons typical Arabic names with Bin (S/O). That looked a bit high :halo:

Re: Why?

Ali an interesting pint about the names of heroines of Shah Latif's poetry. All the seven soormis (heroines) names (Marvi, Sassi, Noori, Leela, Sorath, Sohni, Moomal) mean moon. Some names like (Marvi, Sassi) simply means moon and others like Noori, Moomal means having face like Moon.

Sassi was definitely a Muslim charcter as she was thrown in river like Hazrat Musa, because her Brahmin parents were told by astronomers that girl would marry a Muslim (Punhoo - Baloch prince of makraan). She was later brought up by a Muslim Laundrer (Dhobi)

There are confusion about the religion of Marvi who was abducted by Umar Soomro, as the most of the chaarcters including her parents got local names which hide the religious identity of the characters. Moreover, Thar (the area where this story belongs) is still a Hindu majority area. One thing about being her Muslim is her caste Panhwar. Today, we don't see any Hindu Panhwar, but again Panhwar related to the profession of cattle farming that can be done by any person from any religion.

Re: Why?

:emmy: I just can’t read that book. So boring :mad2:
