Why?

We still name our children Sikandar (Alexendar, the great), but never name our children Porus, who was our hero?

We remember Ghaznavi and forgot Jai Paal?

We are proud of Arab conqurors, but detest locals who tried to defend their land?

Re: Why?

Maybe its due to Religion as being a factor?

Also the other reason is everyone likes a winner who wants to be named after a loser.

And sometimes the Losers asked for it, theres a lot of proganda out there and ussualy victors get to write the history, but sometimes as in the case of certian cruel or detestable monarchs the invaders were probably a blessing.

There are some notable exceptions though for example a lot more boys have the name Hussain than Yazeed.

Theres more boys called Lu and Jun in China than Cao

There are more women called Zenobia than Cleopatra etc etc

Re: Why?

But religion is not the factor in case of Sikandar's name. He was also not a Muslim, but his name got recognition in Muslims. Porus might be a Hindu, but we don't hear this name in Hindus although they name their children Prithvi who was defeated by Ghori

Re: Why?

Religious affiliations are also a problem.....:D

Every community needs hero......After war of 65 lot of indians named there son Ayyub..........:D.....instead of Lal Bahadur...

And i saw few saddams after gulf war............

Re: Why?

Well Sikander is suppodly mentioned in the Koran, many scholars belive Zul Qurnain to be Sikander... again this is not for definate but theres almost no mention of Porus.

Also perhaps it has to do with styles and Influence too Porus we dont know a lot about to be honest apart from his last stand and his Elephant Army. Wheras much more details exist about Alexander both in imagery and also iconism.

Re: Why?

In indo-pak wenever used local names.....but indonesian muslims use common indonesian names....

Like their former president Megawati sukarnoputri....:)

Even we accepted pre-islamic farsi/parsi names.....

But we never accepted indian names i donno why...

Re: Why?

As if naming children ‘Aurangzeb’ was not enough :emmy:

Re: Why?

yes many people believe Zulqarnain mentioned in Surah e Kaaf of the Quran as Alexandra. But again name Sikandar is more common than Zulqarnain.

I think Sikandar got popularity only after Muslim conquests in India and have a persian link. I never heard people naming their children 'Dahir' in Sindh although there is a caste Dahiri in Sindh.

Re: Why?

I think we do have local names in Sindh. We had names like Dodo Khan (Dodo being a hero of Sindh, who fought against Khiljis), Chanesar (Dodo's brother), Punhoo (Shah Latif's character), etc People still name their girls Sindhu, Sorath, Marvi, Sassi (heroines of Shah Latif's stories). But 90% names of new generation are now Arabic or Persian.

Re: Why?

Aaah perhaps this is due to the native languages remainign dominant rather than the invaders language prevailing.

I have friends in China and East Asia, they use thier native names like Zhang, Chun, Tanaka etc to denote thier tribes and historical lineage.

But at the same time they retain distinctly Muslim first names or second names.

For example I have a friend who is a Muslim in Malaysia and he is simply knows as Chun Witayakun. But his middle name is Hassan. They retain the Chun name which means lucky and Witayakun is a farming fammily so his name mean “Lucky Hassan the farmer” even though he works as a quality surveyor for a car manufacturer :cb:

Re: Why?

i always like pakistani names...like Allah ditta, khuda bakhsh, maula bakhsh...we dont have such names...

but jumman, ghudu etc were common during old times...:D

Re: Why?

One of the bad habits among our people is nicknames, sometimes even the finest names can be twisted by cruel children and then the next thing you know the name is stuck with you forever.

For example some elders had really bad-ass names like Manovar Khan, but the kids would just shorten it to Mano and thats it… the name sticks.

Same with names like Sher-Afzal that just become Sheraf or Shera

And names like Imadudeen than just get rendered as Madee I mean even the most Macho dudes ended up with sissy names.

In Afghanistan Pulwar is the name of a Sword but if you met a Pathan who was constantly called Pulo Khan you can help but sometimes :omg:

Its a damn shame so many good names rendered impotent.

Re: Why?

In kerala most common nick for Mohammad kutty is Mamooty…:cb:
