is the sky blue?
it has to do with the absorption of other light frequencies by the sky.
When the sun is setting those others aren't absorbed, and thus the sky colours more red/orange
how would one explain this to a 5 year old child?
smack him on his head and tell him not to ask silly questions
usually i would, but when ur a primary school techer that kinda of answer is against the law!!!

tell him that the sky makes the white sunlight appear like blue to us

science is not one of my strongest subjects so whenever children ask me scientific questions i freak out...most of my anwers are.."thats an interesting question..lets try and find out"..only this time with the sky being blue question this soooo did not work...the internet can be so useless at times!!
tell him its the reflection of the sea in the sky.... :p
and tell him the sea is blue cuz of the blue fishes....
