I think only shias use 'as' not sunnis. Your question would be irrelevant here since the thread was started by a sunni inquiring about the usage of Imam. If u wish to inquire as to why shias use 'as' I would suggest opening another thread.
I think its something the general population has picked up from the shias. You find people using this title only for the men in the Prophet's family, for eg. Imam Ali, Imam Hasan and Imam Hussein and even Imam Zain abidene.
Although there is nothing wrong with using the title "Imam" for these people...since they were Imams in their own rights, but it is definitely something we got off the shias who are known for dishonoring the Companions and not giving them their due respect, while they go extremes in their love of the Ahle Bayt.
Crescent: I understand. And its good ur inquisitive. Thats why u shud open a seperate thread. Ur inquisitiveness will not be served well with threads going everywhich way and not a single topic being addressed properly. The explanation of why shias use 'as' will go into shia doctrine and will spark a hundred and one other debates. It should have its own thread.
Sharrabi: :) Thanx for such an unbiased response. I see things havent changed much here in the religion forum.
but it is definitely something we got off the shias who are known for dishonoring the Companions and not giving them their due respect,
that is a generalisation. the fact is shias do respect the real sahabas of rasool
in the sahabas there was a group of munafiqeen whom turned back at the battle of uhud.
out of 700 who left medina 300 turned back, leaving the prophhet of god to his fate.
should we class these people as freinds of the phrophet and give them respect that they dont deserve?
obviously the sahabas that actually listened to the prophet taking islam to their hearts are better than us and they are the best examples of humans on earth after the prophets to follow.
yet those "sahabis" who did not take islam to their hearts while the prophet of allah was living and breathing then went against his deen after he had passed away,in my opinion even we are better than them and have more chance of getting into heaven.
r.a mean ALLAH un sey razi hoon, its usually used for people who commited sins or were kafir bfr and then were converted, like ur 1st three caliphs. I dun think there is a a problem using r.a for Quiad-e-azam and we can say Allama Iqbal r.a.
Now Imam Hussain a.s never commited sin in his life and u dun wana know when u accpeted islam so lets to talk abt that .... SO when someone didnt commit a sin why use r.a for him and y not a.s ???
^^
Were Hazrat Abu Bakr. Hazrat Umer, Hazrat Uthman (RZAH) in those 300?
Umer did am not sure about other 2, how ever people who ran away are forgiven in Quran
But its also indicated that people people who ran away cant be same as who stayed, so i dunno howcome u guys compare A.s with omer they r not same ....

This is a fuuny post, nothing wrong with using imam ???? what do mean
They are actual Imams of Prophet s.a.w and Quran tells to follow those who didnt comit sin and never were kafir .... how can u follow someone who was kafir for 60 yrs and those who were kafir for 40 yrss .. ? How can u follow someone who left his home and intention was to Kill Prophet s.a.w
I am not sure what happend later on but i assume that umer saw Hazrat Ali a.s or Hazrat hamza or both there, he realized he cant mess with em soo there wasa change in plan and accepted islam !!!
wasalam
why we use word Imam with Hazrat Hussain R.A but not with Hazoor PBUH , Hazrat Abu Bakar R.A , Hazrat Ummar R.A or Hazrat Usman R.A
although true imam of muslims is only Hazoor PBUH
so why both shia and suni use word Imam with Hazrat Hussain R.A
Rasool s.a.w is not Imam coz he is Prophet s.a.w, Prophet of all prophets and Imams so people stick with calling him PROPHET s.a.w ......
Others umer abu bakar and usman cant be followed coz they were sinners and Quran doesnt let u follow a sinner or a person who was kaffir !!!!!
Now Imam Hassan a.s and Imam Hussain a.s Are leaders of Jannah as someone already said soo Imam goes for em thats y sunni call em Imam, but sunnis also call imam hanfi and 3 more people Imam who rnt Leaders of jannah
Shias Call em Imam coz we dont belief in Khilafat, we only Belive in Imammat and Our 2nd Imam is Imam Hassan a.s and 3rd is Imam Hussain a.s thats y we call em Imam
To qualify to be from among the Companions of the Prophet (saw) one has to be from among anyone who knew or saw Prophet Muhammed (saw), believed in his teachings, and died as a Muslim .
So the munafiqun (hypocrites) are not regarded as being among the Companions of the Prophet (saw)
About those 300 people who deserted the Prophet (saw) at the time of Uhad: - read below and get the facts.
Pray, tell us how many were these nobles souls who earned Shias respect as** ‘real Sahabas’**?
I have heard of their numbers being only 4. Some sources say 6 and the maximum amount only 17. Is that true?
@ aqeel123 : your rant is not worth a reply. I guess as your language suggests you have been energised or invigorated by matam (too much of it).

First of all U r mizing two different Situations.
1st Situation was, An Army of 1000 led by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) marched towards Uhad, and 300 Munafiqeen led by Abdullah bin Ubi left the army and went back to Madina saying that, their suggestion was not entertatined so they will not fight.
2nd was, when Muslims acheived victory, and the archors left the place where they were told to stay, Khaled Bin Waleed (RZA) attacked muslims from that loop hole and made turned the vicotry into defeat. At that, time Some Sahabi (RZA) sticked close to Prohphet (PBUH) and they retreated up on the mountain of Uhad, Khaled Bin Waleed (RZA) was after them when Abu-Sufayain(RZA) gathered his army and headed back to Makkah yelling that we have taken the revenge of Badr.
NoW the 3rd situation which is reflected in Quran is according to muhadseen, pictures the incident of Haneen (which u are saying that they were forgiven) and not Uhad. Infact After uhad the Ayats where about following Prophet's (PBUH) commands, and the consequences of not doing the same was given.
dont believe me i dunt want u too, but if it wasnt ohad then Umer is in trouble coz he isnt forgiven and thats according to u, by the way u r the first person i've met who came up with this interpetation, u might as well write ur interpetation abt Quran and call urself a scholar like zakir naik !!!
"To qualify to be from among the Companions of the Prophet (saw) one has to be from among anyone who knew or saw Prophet Muhammed (saw), believed in his teachings, and died as a Muslim">ibn sidique
so what about hazrat owaise karni who became muslim, whom the prophet regared in high esteem but they never actally got to see each other.is he classed as a sahabi?
I duno wether to call him sahabi or not, but he the example from rasool s.a.w life who did matam, he brooke all this tooth thinking of which one did Rasool s.a.w break in ohad ? Sooo hats of to him !!!!!
