Why so less Muslims in IPL ?

The population of Indian Muslims is far more than that of Pakistani Muslims. Yet you see so less Muslim players in IPL and Indian domestic cricket. Very few are able to make it to even Indian team if you see the past 50 years. It makes me wonder that if Pakistan had not came into existence, talent like Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Yunus, Javed Miandad, Zahir Abbas, Abdul Qadir, Shoaib, Yusuf, Yunus, saeed, Afridi…etc. would have been lost, because surely 5-10 % of them would have made it to even IPL.

Re: Why so less Muslims in IPL ?

thats why we have Pakistan.
;)
i hear first hand from indians living in India that there is so much discrimination and
i ihope indian government will take some steps to curb this down.

There you go :k:

Re: Why so less Muslims in IPL ?

One of my Indian Muslim friend told me that due to the fact that Muslims are not given equal opportunities for selection in different fields of life specially cricket, a lot of Indian Muslims support Pakistan during a Pak-India match. They even raise Pakistani flags in their houses and schools. :)

I dont think so. May be in some areas but not all. My wife has many Muslim relatives in India but they always go for Indian team thats why we don't call/communicate with each other during any ICC or bilateral events :D

finally u agree with me mate

I know muslims who always back Pakistan.
I know Indian Muslims who will back Indian and love india but they
admit that there is so much discrimination against Muslims that sometimes its so obvious
specially in the military and the police the Indians do not allow Muslims
in universities they discriminate Muslim students.

That was sarcasm, my friend :)

It is good for the sake of your relatives security. You don't want to see their familes burn down by Bajrang Dal / RSS terrorists, in case india loses.

lolz i know it was ;)

Re: Why so less Muslims in IPL ?

**i am an UNBIASED Indian Muslim and i strongly encourage you not to believe what you hear or perceive to be the truth. There is open rhetoric against us by fundamentalist Hindus but other than that we have more religious freedoms / rights than an Egyptian / Algerian / middle eastern person would have. discrimination in jobs...yes! but its subtle not obvious. These days, to be honest, bribery is what matters the most. If you got money, you an get the job no matter who you are. Discrimination is everywhere to eb honest...in Pakistan too, against Mahajirs/sindhis/sarhadis. so, lets be objective here. thank you.

we, in india, have AligaRh Muslim University, hundreds of thousands of minority institutions, mostly for muslims, urdu taught in schools. even majority Hindus are learning urdu to teach in Colleges coz it pays good money at par with any other subject, like math and science.

Re: Why so less Muslims in IPL ?

Shehzadey
i am very happy that you are one out of 150 MILLION Indian Muslims (by the way u live in Canada dont forget  ) who is happy but here please read this Extract:

"Indian Muslims do have their high achievers: President Abdul Kalam; Wipro chairman and India’s richest man, Azim Premji, and a host of Bollywood stars (Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan). But for every President or Muslim tech entrepreneur or movie star or policeman, there are 1,000 others with tales of discrimination in the workplace or the education system, harassment by wayward police officers or segregation into ghettos by Hindu landlords. Whatever the causes, there is no disputing the fact that Indian Muslims today are less educated, poorer and live shorter, less secure and less healthy lives than their Hindu counterparts. Census figures paint a bleak picture of their plight. In rural India, 29% of Muslims earn less than $6 a month, compared with 26% of Hindus; in the cities (where a third of all Muslims live) the gap rises to 40% vs. 22%. Some 13% of India’s population is Muslim, yet Muslims account for just 3% of government employees, and an even smaller percentage are employed by private Hindu businesses. Meanwhile, in the cities, 30% of Muslims are illiterate, vs. 19% of Hindus. Nor are any of these indices improving.

India’s Muslims are also far more likely than Hindus to be victims of violent attacks. In all the communal riots since independence, official police records reveal that three-quarters of the lives lost and properties destroyed were Muslim, a figure that climbed to 85% during last year’s riots in Gujarat. The Gujarat authorities even went so far as to price Muslim lives below those of Hindus, offering $2,050 in state compensation for Muslims killed but double that for the riots’ 58 Hindu victims. “There is often a tendency in India to treat Muslims as them rather than us,” says K.C. Tyagi, former leader of the moderate Hindu Samajwadi Party. “And this tendency does have terrible manifestations. Even today, by and large, Muslims have not been admitted to what we call the Indian mainstream.” The portion of the population affected by this systemic discrimination is staggering: India’s Muslim “minority” numbers 150 million people (vs. 850 million Hindus)—after Indonesia, the second-largest Islamic community in the world."

TIMEasia Magazine: India’s Great Divide

What i want to say is that don’t show things more shiny then they are please when there is a problem just admit it and face it and solve it.

why are we talking about Hindu Muslim issues in KK?

Yes India may have the largest muslim population in the entire world. But what is the proportion of muslim population as compared to the total Indian population? 10-15% if I am not mistaken.

This means 1-2 muslim member in an Indian team shouldn't be an alarming situation for Indian Muslims or for anyone else.

Re: Why so less Muslims in IPL ?

We have 5 Muslims (Pathan bros, Munaf, Zaheer & Kaif) who are part of the national squad (depending on form/injuries)...I dont think their religion was ever a factor in their playing/not playing for the national team.

first of all, i ain't a shahzada...ok? so plz stop calling by those alqaab o aadaab. secondly, my status has nothing to do with facts.

I am moving this thread to world affairs forum

I w'd rather only discuss cricket in cricketnama

Imagine what kind of luxury are these guys enjoying. Residing in India and raising Pakistani flags..

Just remember what happened to the poor kurds when they supported Iran.

Well said friend. Common sense is lost on many of the posters here...

Friend things are not as simple as you put here
Simplyme “simply” denying facts is only cause india more problem in the long run, if u dont take care of it now it will get only worse.

Muslims adopt Hindu IDs to escape discrimination in India

Shaikh Azizur Rahman, SPECIAL TO THE STAR
Toronto Star

On a busy street in Calcutta’s business district, he runs a food stall called “Rajib’s Paratha” and is known as Rajib Mallick.

Using the popular Hindu name, no one suspects he is Rajab Ali Mollah, a Muslim who has adopted a fictitious identity to blend in with the neighbourhood’s mostly Hindu office workers.

Sohrab Hossain, a Muslim student who came to the city to complete his Masters degree in English and lives in a Hindu-dominated housing complex, is known as Sourav Das among the students he tutors. To keep up his Hindu appearance he has a small idol of Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of learning, on his desk.

Every morning as she prepares to go to work as a fishmonger, Hasina Khatoon takes off her silver armband embossed with “Allah” in Arabic, puts vermillion powder on her forehead and red-white conch bangles on her wrist – symbols of a married Hindu woman – to maintain a Hindu appearance in a fish market where almost all of her customers are Hindus.

Rajab Mollah, Sohrab Hossain and Hasina Khatoon say they have adopted new identities in a Hindu-majority society where as Muslims they would face discrimination.

Analysts say many Muslims from all socio-economic backgrounds are quietly hiding their religious affiliation.

“Muslims in almost all spheres of life face a communal discrimination by powerful Hindus and they are denied many of their basic rights and freedom in an unjustified way,” said Anjan Basu, a social analyst and executive editor of Pratidin, a Bengali daily in Calcutta.

Re: Why so less Muslims in IPL ?

Facts, facts you want more facts? Don’t just believe whta you wanna believe please. If you do not hear the cry of Muslims in India and only listen to the Bollywood and high profile and handfull of succesful (some very succesful i agree) Muslims then you are very very very mistaken.

Powerpoint format can be downloaded by clicking here.

The Muslim population of India was 140 million or 15 per cent in 2001, but faces tremendous deprivation, discrimination and exclusion. Here are some statistics from the Sachar Report:

In rural areas: 94.9% of Muslims living below poverty line fail to receive free food grain.
Only 3.2% of Muslims get subsidized loans.
Only 2.1% of Muslim farmers have tractors, while just 1% own hand pumps.
54.6% of Muslims in villages and 60% in urban areas have never been to schools. In rural areas, only 0.8% of Muslims are graduates, while in urban areas despite 40% of the Muslims receiving modern education only 3.1% are graduates. Only 1.2% of Muslims are post-graduates in urban areas.
While West Bengal has 25% Muslim population, only 4.2% are employed in state services. In Assam, with a 40% Muslim population, only 11.2% are in government employment. Kerala has 20% Muslims, but only 10.4% of government employees are Muslim.
In Karnataka, where the Muslim population is 12.2%, 8.5% are employed in government services. While in Gujarat, of the 9.1% Muslim population, 5.4% are in state jobs; in Tamil Nadu, against a 5.6% Muslim population, 3.2% are employed in government.
Though West Bengal is known as a political bastion of the left bloc, the ones who have always spoken strongly against parties entertaining communal bias, the state has zero% Muslims in state PSUs. While Kerala has 9.5% in state PSUs, Maharashtra has only 1.9%.
Though the Sachar committee was not able to secure data regarding the presence of Muslims in the armed forces, it is fairly well-known that their percentage here is not more than three.
Muslims form only 10.6% of the population in Maharashtra, but 32.4% of the prison inmates here are Muslims. In New Delhi, 27.9 % of inmates are Muslims, though they form only 11.7% of the population here. While in Gujarat, Muslims form 25.1% of the ones imprisoned, they form 9.1% of the population. In Karnataka, Muslims form 12.23% of populace and 17.5% of those imprisoned.
At the same time, the report rejects the following myths about Muslims in India:

Muslims shun modern education and flock to madrasas (only four per cent do so);
They are averse to family planning (fertility rates are in decline); and
Demographically they will before long flood the rest of the population.

Marginalization of Muslim Minority in India The Islamic Workplace

Don’t give me your own opinion i am not interested in that just come with facts. Even the Indian government is finally admitting there is margenalisation of Muslims and is conducting different surveys which is a good sign so don’t just here deny the factualities dearest.
