why so down? todays attacks?

I will ask the guy who is leading this whole thing to join in and talk about it sometime. The big thing we will need help with is promotion, sponsorships in pakistan 9corporate sponsorships), media coverage etc, because for it to be self sustaining we need financial support just like other HDF initiatives

u can look at hdf initiatives at http://www.hdf.com/dotnetnuke/home.aspx

this page is specifically about the digital study hall initiative

http://www.hdf.com/dotnetnuke/EventDetail/tabid/86/id/24/Default.aspx#34

if people really want to help. on the left of the screen yof the page you will see a window about developing a new school. costs $3K. thats $100/person for 30 people. if anyone wants to host a small community fundraiser and wants HDF ppl to come talk about what is being done and results, let me know.

There is a link to 2008 annual report, http://www.hdf.com/dotnetnuke/portals/0/reports/communityReport-2008.pdf

read, see if it is something you want to get involved in, get others involved.

Re: why so down? todays attacks?

Thanks. I will look over this.

Every month, my Islamic school collects $$ and we usually send it over to Pakistan. A couple months ago, we fed 160 poor children who hadn't eaten pulao, some fruit, or had clean water for ages. We are always looking for situations where our money can be well spent, to people who really need it.

Maybe we can work something out.

Re: why so down? todays attacks?

There is probably a workign team in your city that I can introduce you to. the approach HDF takes is of more sustainable mid-long term stuff, while there is microfinancing, some of the immediate charity is not the strong area although HDF had jumped in for immediate relief help during the earthquake. The view is that there are good groups working on immediate need initiatives, so someone needs to focus on other stuff. someone needs to give the hungry person a fish while someone else tries to teach them how to fish .. thats the thinking

Re: why so down? todays attacks?

I think the biggest favor us Pakistanis can do to our country is to just stop hating each other first. Yellow against purple, urdu vs punjabis, sunni vs shia, rich vs. poor.....we should all unite first. Then it will be very hard for someone from outside to come and destroy what we have.

:salute:

Re: why so down? todays attacks?

What is the likelyhood of an NGO that starts off with purely good intentions being blackmailed or involved or politicized?

Re: why so down? todays attacks?

same likelihood as the other institutions, which sad to say means high. groups like edhi foundation have done well against all pressure etc so u never know

Re: why so down? todays attacks?

That's just the thing. See, if the NGO start to do good, the current Govt. or whatever Govt. happens to be operating at the time comes along, scoops the credit for "propping and allowing it to work and do well for the citizens" and then they use that credit to propogate that they had all along been working on similar efforts.

Edhi is a unique example. But that also maybe due to its time tested, and weathered commitment to the cause of serving people. Do NGOs remain steadfast in their goal of uplifting their respective communities or do they just give up, pack up and leave after failing or not seeing the results they'd like to see for various reason (sociopolitics, general mindset, traditions, etc)?

Bank-rolling an organization is a relatively easy part. But what if that comes with strings attached, and the organization starts to become portrayed as a fruitful tree that is ready to be harvested by either those who bankrolled it all along or their affiliates, some of whom may happen to be in the political system with authority to disband it, should it fail to submit.

I'm just playing the devil's advocate here. These are some of the real problems that any of the honest institution has, does, and/or will face at one point or another. Those who tough it out through the storm, live to have earned their name among the people, such as Edhi Foundation.

Re: why so down? todays attacks?

there are a number of well established NGOs that have multi year or decade history of ongoing work. The point however is real and is something that is on the radar in the discussions being held with luger-biden bill.

Your ideas will be helpful.

Hidaya Foundation is a good non profit organiztion (doing work all over the world) its based here in CA but alot of their effort is in pakistan and the president is pakistani.

Very principled standards. No room for politics. Just doing good for world citizens for the sake of allah.

Re: why so down? todays attacks?

Thanks for the recommendation, links to teh site any other info would be helpful for ppl who may be interested

I hope every donation people are gathering for our country goes in right hands and May ALLAH bless all the people who are doing efforts for Pakistan Ameen.

Well I have a idea why not put all so-called jihadis in plane and throw them off as China did for drug addicts.:vivo:

I don’t know I am so angry at this moment but whenever I will cool down I’ll think of something.
My main question is how can we change system or make law and order possible in Pakistan, because if people start understanding laws then there might be a little chance for Pakistan

kafi bara plane chahiye ho ga, number 1 to get that many ppl on it, plus these extremist mullah variety especially the leaders are khush khuraak aur lagta hai keh khatay peetay gharanay kay hain.

Re: why so down? todays attacks?

I know about HDF...does anyone know much about Developments In Literacy - Chicago chapter?

Re: why so down? todays attacks?

What can do we do about it from here? Yes, we are depressed, for the first time in a awhile we are really having second thoughts about taking the kids for the wedding in April. I find the shift in the attitude of the younger generation to be the most depressing. Most of them are so busy blaming India for this that they are not willing to accept that dramatic changes are necessary now. There is a lack of accountability within the general populace, not only the leadership.

Punjab has highest per capita income in income,

take example of gujrat too, no central support and with lot of disturbances and communal force in power they are still #1 state in india

but you can't compare place to another

take example of Bihar they are in same country and they get Special Economy fund from center and full of resources and fertile land compare to any other state, they are still at the bottom, it denpends on public mentality, you can't change them unless they want to change

here is a link to hidaya foundation:

Hidaya Foundation - Home

They were given some medals for their work during the Oct '08 earthquake and also the one in Quetta that happened a few months ago.

And they are involved in many other aspects of charity work.
