Why Should I Root My Phone?

We hear these big geeks talking about rooting devices and many like me wonder whats the point in rooting your perfectly fine working phone?
Well wait no more lets ask our rooting addicts why one should root their phone and other devices.

Re: Why Should I Root My Phone?

Getting Free Tethering (ability to connect to phone as a wifi hot spot) and being able to run titanium backup are the top 2 reasons for me to root my android phone.

Re: Why Should I Root My Phone?

Does Rooting your phone void yur warrenty?
JK: Titanium backup gives very good options but why do i need to backup my apps? SMS and Gallery backup is all i need.

Re: Why Should I Root My Phone?

It does void it but there is a way to unroot phones as well. There are tricks that would reset the device status back to normal (phone companies use this information to see if the phone was modified, after rooting it changes to custom)

DMD: I use it so that I can re-install apps after installing a ROM. Another good reason to root your phone. Custom ROM's.

Re: Why Should I Root My Phone?

There are now flash counters that let the manufacture know if you flashed your phone, so you have to be careful of that. I bricked my earlier device as the OS was newer when I tried the rooting method.

With rooting, you run the risk of malware really doing a number on your phone. Yes, you can install AVs but I deleted mine because it was consuming so much battery. This is one area where apple excels as they don't stop upgrading your phone after one year or now "supposedly" eighteen months that Samsung is pushing now.

Re: Why Should I Root My Phone?

That was one of the things I mentioned with the status of the phone. They cant see the counter until they start the phone in recovery.

^^now about iphone: you cant update the iPhone if its jail broken either....I agree about Samsung though....that is why I think nexus phones are better but only if they add a micro SD slot.

Re: Why Should I Root My Phone?

still ....looking for reason to root my phone

Re: Why Should I Root My Phone?

I would recommend it. Sometimes I would actually root and install ROM on my phone to checkout the scripts that they have for them.

Re: Why Should I Root My Phone?

may be i will buy used nexus 4 and root it

Re: Why Should I Root My Phone?

any android phone will do.

Re: Why Should I Root My Phone?

Nexus 4 is cheap these days as Nexus 5 is out.

Re: Why Should I Root My Phone?

Go for it. I have 2 old android phones that I keep playing with. I also tried some android app development in my spare time. Nexus 5 should be a great help with that.

Re: Why Should I Root My Phone?

Actually you can as I did with ipod touch (same iOS except a cell radio) by restoring it back. It was a tethered jail break (you had to use a certain combination of keys to start it unlike untethered) but if it is possible on Android with new updates, then I am it would also be possible with iOS.

Re: Why Should I Root My Phone?

Actually its not possible on android to get updates if you are root. You usually have to rely on ROM's to get new updates or unroot the phone.

Re: Why Should I Root My Phone?

Of course, you will lose your root but there are tons of threads on XDS forums about people asking if they would retain root if they updated through AT&T etc who are pushing updates to them

Re: Why Should I Root My Phone?

From what I remember if you have your phone rooted it would not check for the updates and will error out. Most likely when clicking on software update nothing will happen.

Re: Why Should I Root My Phone?

If you have the CyanogenMod ROM installed it gives you updates. They come out with Nightlies (alphas and beta's) that could download and install.

Other reasons to root (besides tethering and backups): Nandroid backups, where you image your phone, so go and install whatever you install on your phone, you can always come back to the exact config that you have now.
2. Install ad-blocking apps
3. Install firewalls, so you can block what apps can access the net
4. access system files to add/modify them
5. Change system settings. Eg. the vol-up button on my phone turns on flash if my phone is locked; T-Mobile on my lock screen says Tofi-Mobile :)
