Why read Quran? We can't understand it

Why read Quran? We can’t understand it

Why do we read Quran, even we can’t understand
Arabic?

An old American Muslim lived on a farm in the
mountains of eastern Kentucky with his young grandson.
Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the
kitchen table reading his Qur’an.

His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to
imitate him in every way he could.

One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa, I try to read
the Qur’an just like you but I don’t understand it,
and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close
the book. What good does reading the Qur’an do?”

The Grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in
the stove and replied, “Take this coal basket down to
the river and bring me back a basket of water.”

The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked
out before he got back to the house. The grandfather
laughed and said, “You’ll have to move a little faster
next time,” and sent him back to the river with the
basket to try again.

This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was
empty before he returned home.

Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was
impossible to carry water in a basket, and he went to
get a bucket instead.

The old man said, “I don’t want a bucket of water; I
want a basket of water. You’re just not trying hard
enough,” and he went out the door to watch the boy try
again.

At this point, the boy knew it was impossible, but he
wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as
fast as he could, the water would leak out before he
got back to the house.

The boy again dipped the basket into river and ran
hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket
was again empty.

Out of breath, he said, “See Grandpa, it’s useless!”

“So you think it is useless?” The old man said, “Look
at the basket.”

The boy looked at the basket and for the first time
realized that the basket was different. It had been
transformed from a dirty old coal basket and was now
clean, inside and out.

“Son, that’s what happens when you read the Qur’an.
You might not understand or remember everything, but
when you read it, you will be changed, inside and out.
That is the work of Allah in our lives.”

Re: Why read Quran? We can't understand it

excellent parable.....without doubt the Word of Allah is powerful. Merely looking at the words of the Holy Book is Ibadat. May Allah guide us and grant us the ablility to understand His Book and transform our shallow lives.

Re: Why read Quran? We can’t understand it

i hope u have a sound evidence for this…
any citations from Quran or Sunnah to prove this???

Re: Why read Quran? We can't understand it

As one who is learning about Islaam, I understand and agree with the parable. The Koran should be heard as written. But also, I truly think it very important to learn the meaning of the book. If you hear the beautiful sounds, thats what they are....although it has a positive influence on you, it does nothing to convey the meaning behind these beautiful sounds.

Re: Why read Quran? We can't understand it

^ yep, it was sent down as a guidance....
and i f u dont understand it, there is no guidance in it for u....

Re: Why read Quran? We can't understand it

AHH! Dont give up so easily, Mr A!!

There are translations available in most every language.

Re: Why read Quran? We can't understand it

evidence for what? Its an axiom. The Holy Book is a blessing from the first surah till Nas. Is not Surah Hamd...a cure? Is not looking at the face of parents an act of Ibadat? There is a famous hadith for tht.

Why read Quran? We can't understand it
Why do we read Quran, even we can't understand
Arabic?

^ I only read this...and to tell you the truth I agree...I think the Quran sold in Pakistan should be converted to the Urdu language instead of Arabic, since most people dont bother reading the translation (so what did we learn about Islam, nothing) , or we should all be made to learn the Arabic language.

Re: Why read Quran? We can't understand it

CS, I agree, although I got a DVD set of the entire Koran so that I can hear it, as written, in Arabic. Truly, it is beautiful...but conveys none of the meaning.

To get to the meaning, I have an English translation. That completes the picture, the ideas etc.

Its a very important thing to learn for yourself, to know what it is that you are following and adhering to. And although it is a rare thing, there ARE indeed those who call themselves "religious scholars" who can take advantage of followers who do not truly know the holy book, telling them things that may not quite be true about the religion in order to further their own personal agendas.

Re: Why read Quran? We can't understand it

^ Agreed, I hear all kind of things from these "religious scholars" and I am like "how do you know that" I do not remember it being in the Quran...And I think people who actually listen to these maulvis, who most of the time say something and do something else, is not right. If one reads the Quran in translation is mualvi is not needed to tell them what to do and not to do. Its all in the Quran...

Re: Why read Quran? We can’t understand it

Maybe you if you had read the whole post you may have gotten out and bought a copy which had Urdu translation.

Don’t mix things here.

  1. When you recite the Quran in Arabic you are doing ibadah. Like when you pray you recite Surah Fatiha. Does that mean you should get it translated into Urdu and recite the Urdu translation while praying?

  2. Understanding the Quran by getting either a translation into a language you can easily understand or learning Arabic so you can understand what Quran says is to implement that in your life and live your life with the guidance Allah :swt: provided us.

I hope you understand the difference.

Re: Why read Quran? We can't understand it

One is supposed to learn Arabic. I personally read the Quran in Arabic, but then read an english translation on the other page.

Re: Why read Quran? We can't understand it

i think it's mportant to understand what you're reading in the Quran. It's useless to just know Arabic and not even know what it means.

Re: Why read Quran? We can't understand it

The true reward in reading the Quran is in understanding it meaning and applying it to one's life.

Although reading the Quran in Arabic is an act of ibadah and very rewardful, Allah (swt) sent the Quran so that we would implement its teaching into our lives.

Sometimes we get so hung up on "if you read this surah 100x then this will happen" that we miss the point.

Re: Why read Quran? We can't understand it

Learn Arabic. Otherwise you won't understand the sophisticated metaphors & symbolism used in the content, unless somebody of higher knowledge explains it to you.

Re: Why read Quran? We can't understand it

I am not saying that I have not read it (I love Arabic) and plus hun I have a urdu and an english Quran. But I am talking about all those people who just read it in Arabic, since Muslims are supposed to rather than understanding it through translations...

Re: Why read Quran? We can't understand it

everybody knows we should apply it in our lives. reading the quran in arabic is per se an act of ibadat. and to read a surah 100x is also rewardful. i remember a hadith the holy Prophet .saw. advising hz Ali a.s. to recite surah hamd before sleeping. tht act was equal to hajj.

Re: Why read Quran? We can't understand it

^Many of the ahadith about reading this 100x and so on do not have a sound isnaad.

Re: Why read Quran? We can't understand it

my parents taught me to recite Surah Hamd and the 4 Quls before sleeping. wht r u saying?

Re: Why read Quran? We can't understand it

I think what she is saying is that the Hadeeths which mention that, this act equates to Hajj, are weak or fabricated Hadiths. Perhaps you can share the referrence of this Hadeeth us, because even I have troubles understanding this.

By the way, its 3 Quls before sleepings, but absolutely nothing wrong with reciting 4.
