I just want to know why does freedom in eyes of men is considered whether a woman is allowed to parade around naked or not.

oops lemme be politically correct and add "Some men" ^^

iv already asked, surprisingly enough, no one bothered answering
although leek does say that its the most obvious way..maybe thats their reasoning?

sorry hun, i skimmed thru the thread..
hmm.. shady answer isnt it

shady is an understatment, i don;t think they know how to answer as they cant justify it...simple as...they know its wrong yet fail to explain ...

wierd

a liberated pakistani woman... would be that woman who fights the right to get an education, work (if she wants to) and have the courage to speak up against injustice..

parading around in a bikini, does not mean liberation in any sense.. pfft

I thought my answer was comprehensive.

^ i just read ur explanation above.

I really dont think a female winning a miss pakistani or watever title, is gonna achieve anything. It only makes things worst... a young girl will loko at that and think "im so ugly.. i can never be that pretty"

if some girl wants to prove a point and make a stand for women in pakistan.. maybe she should get an education.. and do someting with that. Make some sort of difference.. fight for the rights of women.. i dunno become a lawyer or create an NGO.. honestly a bikini states nothing!!

Seeing as other expressions of equality of feminine power are more discreet, this method makes the biggest impact.

Imagine a Miss Pakistan won MIss World (ok it wouldnt happen, I mean not without a razor, lots of gillette and a make over), it would inspire millions of little Pakistani girls to be something, and not settle for life as a housewife.

Now isnt that worth it?

what's wrong with being a housewife?
Every girl shud have her own goals out of life. There's nothing wrong with devoting your life to your family. A big fat bank account is not the only symbol of prosperity and success in life

I would rather ave little girls be inspired by a scientist, an athelete, a writer, or an activist.

Having been a volunteer at inner city programs here, little girls were more inspired by olympic atheletes and connie rice than with miss world, miss america, miss idaho pr heck even miss south central LA

plus them miss world type chicas never get beyond world peace and stuff as there aims in life.

Not that I have been following it closely, but how many miss worlds have really brought about world peace (in this world that is)

I think thats missing the point.

The aim of Miss World is not to bring world peace, but to generate a wave of good feeling and optimism for women across the globe.

For me, as a strong advocate of feminist rights, I feel Miss World is a promotion of the strong, beautiful woman acting independenly and of her own desires.

Its an release for the centuries of hurt the global female collective has had to endure.

Of course little girls should aspire to be intelectuals and so on, but the audience for a Miss World allows the strong feminine message to get thru to the widest audience.

can an average looking 5'1" 170lb woman operating independently and off her own desires work towards releasing the centuries of hurt the global female collective has had to endure?

can she not generate a wave of good feeling and optimism for women across the globe?

can she not do it while not parading in a bathing suit?

An independent woman does not need reassurance from a panel of judges to tell her that she is beautiful by observing every nook and cranny of her body under strict scrutiny. "Release of hurt".. i dont think any contestant in the miss world pagent, or any other pagent for that matter, would walk off sayin hey, i may have lost the contest but heck, i feel a little less hurt, a lil bit better about mysellf because i had a panel of judges who could care less about me judged me for solely my looks and my practiced answers and still thought i wasnt good enought to win. Women are still suffering, one pagent doesnt take the hurt away because one pagent doesnt create a law, a shelter for women who r physically abused, raped or are a victim of a scorn lover who threw acid on her face because he was filled with spite and hatred. Im sorry i do not see any positive message in pagents, and i can eb wrong, but to me pagents are soley about how good a girl looks in a bikini and the percentage of fat she has on her body. lets not forget how well her "signature wave" is as well.

and besides the miss world puts in more worries for the uglier women who get into an inferiority complex after seeing miss world....

^^ that too..

A beauty pagent is not enpowering, it is a meat market.

If you are really worried about the status of pakistan women then instead of wanting to see then parade half naked somewhere why don't you lobby for equal rights in pakistan or for equal pay and so forth.

If you dont like it, keep away. But dont stop the women of Pakistan from broad ranging social freedoms, and that includes the freedom to chose to exhibit her beauty if she wants.
[/QUOTE]

^ do U sincerely believe any woman wud like to, knowing the kind of society pakistan is. half the women in our TV programs and modelling world, are from lower middle-class financially strapped families, who do it for primarily for the money. u are expecting the more fortunate women in pakistan to want to do the same, when they just know they are more privileged than these femmas.
"social freedoms" is not an intellectual concept. every society has its ladders and valued insitutions that all people like to uphold including the women cause it serves them, and you cant compare one with the other.

That Pakistani society may not be able to sustain and support such freedoms is telling about what it has become.

It is a backward excuse of a society. A feudal system which strifles the very heart and soul from the common man.

We need a sociey where females are free to do what they wish.

Yes these are important. But what exposure does a man with a placard get? 30 sec news stint?

Now a Miss Pakistan on world media saying "I hope to use this year to highlight the plight of women all over the world, and focus on relief from domestic and emotional abuse."

Which has more impact?

That must be the best excuse for being a perv I've ever come across. You nearly had me going there.

But then I remembered what you'd probably be doing whilst watching these 'liberation contests'. Maybe you'll be doing a bit of 'liberating' yourself?
