why does a woman have to celebrate herself by entering a Beauty contest?
is that the only way you feel a woman can be celebrated?
actaully...dont answer that..i think i already know the answer
[/QUOTE]
ditto, i am sure they can "celebrate" and prove their freedom and power by contructive activities like helping out women not as fortunate as themselves. Domestic abuse, rape victime etc.
But hey, if you just wanna watch pretty women in bikinis then I am sure there are many justifications under the facade of liberation.
I see, so holding a beauty pageant really shows off a woman's brains huh? Maybe companies should hold those instead of those boring interviews.

wait a minute. What is wrong with contesting beauty pagents?
How is it "dishonorable" or "shameful"?
Arent the people who say that just holding on to medievil opinions which stated it was wrong for a woman to express and form of opinion, be herself and celebrate her beauty.
Sure they are BEAUTY pagents, not brain pagents, but the most consistant symbol of female rights in the world is freedom of choice and her freedom of action (with her own body)-these go along way to furthering those aims.
Its supposed to be contest of ‘beauty’ as viewed by masses (judges). This whole concept of shame/honor is ridiculous. That’s why we haven’t produced world class female athletes in many (any) sports, because we are too afraid to see a little legs or a pair of tits. Holy moly… how can a burka girl play ping pong without losing her honor and bringing the entire nation to shame.

ok..one more why..then i promise to leave u boys alone
Why does only a "woman's own body" count as "freedom of choice and her freedom of action"

Its not the only method of demonstraing freedom, just the most obvious. I mean in a society where woman are "killed for honor" if they follow there hearts of wear something they want, breaking that shackle, and exhibiting freedom over what happens to there own bodies is the strongest statement of equality.
What's the major difference between a beauty pageant and modelling? Granted, there isn't any official competition in modelling but it's practically the same in the sense that you put yourself, and some say your 'body' on display, while modelling. We have plenty of Pakistani models ... plenty! Just visit Image 3 to get an idea or visit the Visage magazine website to see what these Pakistani women are wearing and modelling. So why is it o.k. for Pakistani women to model but not take part in beauty pageants?
just because it seems as if it is the most obvious way (i personlly do not believe this) does that make it right? Is it ok to encourage muslim women to "express" themselves by entering such contests?
surly one would prefer a woman to use more than her body to express her beauty, as beauty is only skin deep...thats goes for men aswell
I'm not for beauty pageants, don't get me wrong. I am just wondering why there is no uproar at Pakistani women modelling. A lot of the clothes that are sported in Visage is just disgusting - don't shoot me, that's just my opinion. Where is the protest against this? Why focus just on beauty pageants?

Seeing as other expressions of equality of feminine power are more discreet, this method makes the biggest impact.
Imagine a Miss Pakistan won MIss World (ok it wouldnt happen, I mean not without a razor, lots of gillette and a make over), it would inspire millions of little Pakistani girls to be something, and not settle for life as a housewife.
I get where your coming from and am not agreeing or disagreeing with you, i just cannot comprehend why a beauty contest of all things should and would have an impact as such.
What if these little pakistani girls do want to "settle" for being housewifes? It is not up to us for to think about whats best for anyone.
