Re: Why is the caste system so important in Pakistan?
there is no such thing in Islam…there is no caste system endorsed Islamically. it’s a cultural thing which we got it from Hinduism.
one Allah, One Deen, one Qur’aan, one Ummah, one brotherhood in Islam…we are ALL equal and no one is above anyone EXCEPT by his/her taqwa [piety] in the sight of Allah [we are ALL equal in this world].
Re: Why is the caste system so important in Pakistan?
What happened? The caste system should not be looked upon in the workplace where you enhance your abilities and experience. But, it happens in some places and that is very discouraging.
Re: Why is the caste system so important in Pakistan?
Yes Muqawee, this is the forth incident i heard where a candidate got accepted coz they were the same caste as the hiring manager ! or , got promoted coz the caste was the same as the manager and both had a good rapport with each other ..
I have even heard things like a manager telling someone else about a certain employee "apna hi hai " ( refering to the same caste )
It surprises me that this level of dedication to caste system is present even in the professional lives of Government employees .. all four incidents I came across were govt employees ..
Re: Why is the caste system so important in Pakistan?
Religion is used for gaining mileages in life in a hypocrite society. It is the most sensitive area which can be easily exploited. Muslims do follow caste system in sub-continent and in this regard they just disregard religious teachings.
Re: Why is the caste system so important in Pakistan?
This phenomenon got more seriousness than just caste. Nepotism is every where. Even the whole missionary (at top level) in government departments changes with the change in government. Votes are obtained on biradri system. People are instigated in the name of provincial identity. Terminologies like Sons of soil and outsiders still in fashion even after passing 6 decades.
Re: Why is the caste system so important in Pakistan?
billi ki gardan main ghanti bandhe kon.
People who are involved in preaching focus on ritual part rather than evils and disparities in society. That had made people label religion an outdated ideology which failed to address public issues.
Re: Why is the caste system so important in Pakistan?
Depends..if you are going for rishta they’ll go for Are you this or that like rajput or khan or butt or whatever..and if you are going for Job they’ll go with domicile etc.
Most of the Government places are occupied on basis of ‘being punjabi or sindhi or pathan’
Re: Why is the caste system so important in Pakistan?
CSS is purely based on academic marks. They hire candidates through long process of exam, and then formal interview… This is entry level job if you want to work for government… Promotion in grades is path to bureaucracy…
Each government, changes the secretary of key department (FO, IM, FIA, Energy…). It is not favoritism…but how the whole system works in any country…
Re: Why is the caste system so important in Pakistan?
I think this makes sense , I guess generally the entire caste system is so engraved into the day to day lives of many people here that it becomes nearly impossible to leave it out in their professional lives.
I know that in marriages and rishta setting , caste is seen as an extremely important element
Re: Why is the caste system so important in Pakistan?
Agreed , if they had no qualities they wouldnt get hired or promoted , but I guess they get an edge when they are the same caste? I am just stating what I gathered from this whole thing ..
like, at the local mosque that my FIL goes to, someone quite senior was introducing him to another person and eventually said ," he is one of us too " , he was referring to the caste ..
It does seem kind of strange when the caste system is taken so seriously..
Re: Why is the caste system so important in Pakistan?
I guess in the older generation someone from the same caste is seen as “family” hence the term “apna hi hai”. I dont see anything wrong with it nor does it imply to me that something is being taken ‘serious’ I’m sure whoever got hired got some sort of edge, but how is that any different from if their mamu/uncle/relative had forwarded them to the manager? .. I’m sure “apna hi hai” term would still be applied. Just another way of creating ‘apniyat’ .. at least from the scenario you posted. In pakistan it is not unseen to be more friendly and helpful towards people from your own ‘group’ whether that ‘group’ is khandaan, caste, same village, mohalla etc.
