Legal complexity is not a basis for something to be outlawed.

Have you ever thought about how complex financial transactions are regulated? There are thousands and thousands of regulations for each aspect of any commercial industry. Ever wonder how companies with hundreds of subsidiaries or associated companies or joint ventures have legal status and their rights and obligations defined?

Ever wonder how much legal regulation a new medicine goes through? Ever seen a patent for a screwdriver?

“It might become complex” is not a sound reasoning for something to be banned. If difficulty of regulation is the cause, then multivitamin tablets should be the first things to be outlawed.

i think unless you want to legally register your additional spousicles, no one cares in many western countries. utah is filled with polygamist families of the LDS order, no one hides it. they have a working system, and manage it because they are a disciplined lot who only work within their church and wont even indulge in so much as coffee. they take care of their families even if the primary breadwinner dies etc. the only times they run into trouble with the law is when the marriages involve underage girls.

the problem begins when you want to be a polygamist, and get state sponsored welfare for everyone. that said, i do agree that the government needs to stop subsidizing married lifestyles, mortgages etc. married, single, poly, etc shouldnt make the slightest difference in taxation and benefits.

Polygamy came out of a need, purely from reproduction POV. When a woman gets pregnant, she is locked for 9 months before she can be useful part of reproduction. Man in the same time can go and seed more women. For the time periods where size of population determined the strength of a nation, polygamy was the best tool available to grow your head count multiple folds in the shortest possible time.

The way I read it, polyandry in Tibet was not out of need, but out of greed.

My reference is more related to the power. Back in the days, you’re either a master nation, or a slave nation. If you are slave then your wives and daughters and mothers will be sex slaves of unknown men. If you have a choice between becoming sex slaves of strangers or letting your hubby have multiple wives so your tribe can produce more warriors, I am sure you will also pick the second option.

I am merely stating the difference between the two. why polygamy is more common than the polyandry is because it came out if need.
