Now that countries are recognizing gay and lesbian marriages, why polygamy still remains illegal in those countries?
If three or more consenting adults enter into such a relationship, why should the government intrude?

probably because no one is really pushing for polygamy/polyandry to be legalized. someone’s gonna have bullet-proof inheritance and divorce laws though - who gets what, whats considered common property, who is responsible for whose kids, etc get a lot more complicated. probably best for lawyers if such relationships were legalized.

govt doesn’t care if you have multiple partners. but if you want all your partners to be covered under your healthcare plan, if all your partners want tax benefits since they are all legally married, that can cause problems. also, if they allow polygamy, polyandry must also be allowed. not fair that women shouldn’t be able to have multiple husbands as well legally.

We know that people get married to start a Family, the question arises when Homosexaul People get married in order to have children they enter into polygamy and no one will question that…

nobody likes to share … and even if they do at least they don’t share with a commitment of ‘marriage’ .. they would rather be in an ‘open relationship’ and save the hassle if things don’t workout

Since when does administrative complexity an issue for bans on human rights? If a woman wants two husbands and all three consent to the arrangement, why does the government stop them?
If they can have super-complex laws for corporations, why make an excuse of legal complexity for polygamous relationships? If I do want to have health insurance and taxation benefits for all 4 of my wives, make it proportional.
I am not pushing for removing the ban. I am just asking why such a ban was introduced in the first place? Are there cultural or religious reasons for such ban? I am not sure if taxation and social welfare were major issues when this ban was introduced.

^ Because polygamy is not the norm in Christianity and, like it or not, the West had dominated the world for the last 200 years. Even though people are not very religious nowadays, the cultural opposition to polygamy remains.

how will the law keep a limit on how many women a man can marry or how many men a woman one can legally marry? you might be happy with 4 but some may want to have 20.

there isn’t one. you can have relations with as many as you want, but legally everyone cannot get the benefits. until you get some super law makers to come up with laws which will allow infinite number of partners who can file for tax breaks and all other legal issues, this will not be possible.

^ There is a limit and it is considered a crime in several countries to have more than one spouse.
As I said before, taxation and social security issues were not present when such bans were imposed.

it’s not a crime to have relations with more than 1 person but you cannot claim more than 1 person as a legal spouse which makes sense. maybe one day lawmakers can come up with legalizing infinite number of legal partners but really seems impossible as of right now. however, laws do change. no one thought gay marriage was possible 100 years ago but it is today.

So you marry two people and then one of them marries another two people and it keeps going. Everybody would be married to each other. It’s a headache. I think two individuals is a good number for a marriage. And yes there is that anti-Muslim, Christian influence in the west that prohibits polygamy.

And? What is wrong with that? You sleep with one person and you sleep with another. The point is the same. Its 6 degrees of separation. If you can sleep with as many people as you wish why can’t you marry?
