Why is Pakistan's army chief all over social media?

Interesting article about Raheel Sharif’s popularity.

Why is Pakistan’s army chief all over social media?

Pakistan’s army chief is suddenly very prominent on social mediaIs the army general more popular than the prime minister in Pakistan and what does that means for democracy? BBC Urdu’s Amber Shamsi investigates.
Just off the main road between the political capital and army headquarters lies a ramshackle set of houses.
They’re new builds but shoddily constructed. The mosque is no different.
But it has a grand title - it has been named after Pakistan’s current army chief General Raheel Sharif.
“We want General Raheel Sharif to help us catch the land grabbers and land mafia,” says a young bearded man on his way to prayers.
Many Pakistanis seem to see General Raheel Sharif as a messiah who is saving the country from terrorism, corruption and all manner of social ills.

lWizened truck-art painter Habibur Rehman is one of them.
He has been decorating trucks in the traditional Pakistani way since 1955, where intricate patterns of flowers and birds are combined with political messaging.

I ask him who his favourite leaders are.
“Benazir Bhutto is my all-time favourite,” he says, swiftly mentioning her father Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto as his number two choice.
He then lists former presidents and military rulers Generals Ayub Khan, Zia-ul Haq and Yahya Khan.
I ask whether General Raheel Sharif makes the cut.
He raises his hand as if to the sky.
“Given the demand for him now and if he keeps performing well as a leader, he could even surpass the other five.”

General Raheel Sharif is neither a prime minister nor president but his image is popping up across the country.
He appears in banners thanking him for restoring law and order in the chaotic city of Karachi, on the backs of rickshaws and his image has even been used by politicians running for local elections.
The general has also gone digital with the hashtag thankyouraheelsharif](http://www.paklinks.com/gs/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=ThankYouRaheelSharif) appearing on Twitter and Facebook.
The hashtag first appeared after the attack on an army-run school in Peshawar on 16 December 2014.
The army chief seemed to lead the effort to catch and punish the militants responsible for killing 150 people, mostly schoolchildren.
Facebook pages, Twitter handles and memes praising General Sharif are now commonplace.
One mockingly shows Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, President Mamnoon Hussein and General Raheel Sharif sitting together, all with thought bubbles over their heads.

Image copyrigh
President Mamnoon is thinking of a snack, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is concerned with business while the general is thinking of Pakistan.
In a recent cover story on the personality cult of General Sharif, published in The Herald news magazine, journalist Umer Farooq asks whether such campaigns are being deliberately orchestrated.
He quotes Brigadier AR Siddiqi, a former official in the army’s public relations arm, the Inter-Services Publicity Relations (ISPR), who says such image building often “happens under official direction and with the full weight of the state authority”.
The ISPR denies this.
But Umer Farooq says the personality-led focus of the campaign gives the army a “political colour” which is beyond the role and function of a professional army.
Social satire

And where there is reverence online, there will also be mockery.
One producer at a TV channel took it upon himself to document the minutiae of his day based on the hashtag.
“On my way to work, all the traffic lights were green. thankyouraheelsharif](http://www.paklinks.com/gs/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=ThankYouRaheelSharif) .”
One satirical twitter account @DrMajorlyPhD recently wrote: "Watched Mad Max Fury Road. The story is bizarre but the movie is fantastic!! thankyouraheelsharif](http://www.paklinks.com/gs/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=ThankYouRaheelSharif) ".
But supporters on Twitter want an end to the “lame jokes” about the hashtag and have reported them by tagging the ISPR’s director general Lieutenant General Asim Bajwa.
It is under his leadership that the army’s publicity offerings - dramas, music videos and documentaries - have come to dominate the mainstream media landscape.
He was recently promoted from Major General to Lieutenant General.
In the army town of Rawalpindi, I meet Malik Mohammad Yousaf who has his car covered with giant posters of General Sharif.

Image captionImages of General Raheel Sharif can even be seen on car bonnets along with other Pakistani leadersThe general is set to retire next year and Mr Yousaf, who describes himself as a “disillusioned worker” in Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s party, says the general’s term must be extended to continue the fight against terrorism.
This call has been echoed on social media.
And there is a precedent.
The previous incumbent, General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, had his term extended without a social media campaign or public support.
But Ahmed Bilal, the president of the Pildat think-tank which promotes democracy, believes such talk weakens Pakistan’s fragile civilian and democratic institutions.
He says Pildat opinion polls consistently show that Pakistanis no longer want military dictatorships despite supporting the army.
“A distinction needs to be made: military commanders are very popular but not as possible replacements for the current political leadership,” said Mr Bilal.
But as Mr Yousaf lovingly oversees the final touches to his car, he has harsh words for politicians.
“If they continue like this, martial law is a better option.”

Re: Why is Pakistan's army chief all over social media?

Sher is too busy building multi billion rupees Disney land type parks (yes you read it right) so someone else has to take care of basic law and order I guess.

Re: Why is Pakistan's army chief all over social media?

Perhaps Pakistanis want democracy for running the country and they see the army as a regulatory device against corrupt politicians as well as doing their day jobs.

Re: Why is Pakistan's army chief all over social media?

It is norm, we can still find pics of Gen Kiyani resembling with Quaid e Azam.
.

So yes, we can say army does the best PR for its serving generals... But they misreably fails when they come to power....their 30+ year rule is evidence

Re: Why is Pakistan's army chief all over social media?

Except Army rule has been just as corrupt as the worst politicians.

How can corrupt generals be a 'regulatory device' against corrupt politicians.

PakArmy Generals are always power hungry, and history has shown they will destroy the nation to get what they want.

If Gen.Sharif is clearing up groups Army created, that is good - now let's see if he can stop Army corruption and make it a professional outfit.

Re: Why is Pakistan's army chief all over social media?

Its not phobia when its real.
Like me sitting in a perfect plane screaming is phobia.
Me pushed out of that plane heading towards ground, then screaming, is not phobia

I can not stop caring... my family lives in pak... Destruction done to the country is just too much.

IK sitting in MR helicopter is NOT equal to, letting kids die with out life supporting machines. While spending fortune on show off project in one city.

Re: Why is Pakistan's army chief all over social media?

I was merely answering the question ... I wasn't voicing an opinion about the army. But I do believe that Pakistanis want to believe that the army's role is to intervene only in exceptional circumstances and not to be corrupt. The ground reality may not be the same as what the people want.

Re: Why is Pakistan's army chief all over social media?

Lol

Plz check the topic and talk accordingly...and Pakistanies, they shall rise, one day...

Re: Why is Pakistan's army chief all over social media?

This phenomenon is not new. Since partition these generals had behaved like deities for Pakistanis. There have been always a vast majority particularly belonging to Punjab who praise them as their saviors. Pakistan army is like social welfare department for them. Hence who so ever benefit by joining army getting perks and undue benefits at the cost of the country will always sing 'bajans' for this army. Army itself is also involved in interfering with civilian governments and media, they have the force and means to kick the arse of anyone without challenge in the Pakistani courts, who tries to show the true face of them. As long they have support of Punjab unconditionally this will go on for ever.

Only brief time of ZAB's rule, where civilian government had upper hand over these people. As soon they were rehabilitated by ZAB after 1971 disaster, they hanged their savior and sent his dead body to his ancestor's town. After that a very brief period NS tried to enforce constitution to make them serve under the civilian government. He was arrested, sent to 25 years of jail (being a Punjabi he was not hanged or killed) and later banished to KSA for 10 years on the recommendations of their real masters.

Re: Why is Pakistan's army chief all over social media?

Re: Why is Pakistan's army chief all over social media?

Much of "marketing" as well as to portray him as "probable messiah"

Re: Why is Pakistan's army chief all over social media?

Reason is quite simple, and has stood true for decades....same reason why people rejoice when army takes over, but bemoan when it overstays its welcome. People want democracy as its supposed to be run by civilians, but want institutions as they are run by the army.

If civilian parties clean up their act, and let institutions run as they are supposed to, and stop commandeering police, NAB, FIA and FBR for their own personal gains, then people will effectively forget army rule, and will not welcome it when it comes.

Re: Why is Pakistan’s army chief all over social media?

its hard to believe that people have gone to the extent of worshiping Raheel Sharif. This image is instead, created by anti-army social media brigade, for the sarcasm or whatever they like.

Re: Why is Pakistan's army chief all over social media?

Reality.

In Pakistan people are really appreciative of Gen. Raheel efforts for taking care of Karachi & Zarb-e-Azab operation and the icing on the cake is bad-governance of Federal/Punjab/Sindh.

Textile exports are declining and so is large-scale-manufacturing, textile mills are getting 4 hours of gas & 12 hours of electricity speaks volume about all the PM/SS advertisement about solar park, nandipur, Pakistan Power Project. Economy is already in recession, the interest rate is all time low still businesses are not getting taking any loans.

Dollar Dar is taking loans at the speed unknown before, he is an accountant and he is trained to make books good from outside, inside its all ramblings !
