One of my friends has a fear…she fears dying in a car crash with her music on because music is haram.
So since google-mullah doesnt really satisfy my curiosity…who here can tell me why music is considered haram?

Re: Why is music considered haram?
The most explicit mention of musical instruments is made in a narration by the Messenger of Allah who says:
... "Verily I was sent to perfect noble morals" which is a famous tradition in which the Holy Prophet outlines the
basic fundamental reasons for which he was sent. What is not so famous is what follows those words of the Prophet pbuh. He says: "Verily I was sent to perfect noble morals and to annihilate the pan-pipe and the strings
*.."
The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) said,
“And the person with the [sin of] singing (al-ghinã’) will be raised [on the day
of resurrection] blind, deaf and dumb. The person with [the sin of] adultery,
of wood-wind, and of drum will also be raised in the same way.”
Imam Ali stated ...
“Angels do not even enter a house that has wine, drum, tambourine or a
flute. Even the prayers of the inhabitants of this house are unacceptable.
They are deprived of barakat.
Who can deny that song lyrics often carry messages that preach deceit, lust, indecency, fornication, and violence? In fact, music and sex are almost inseparable partners in destruction in our modern culture. A quick look at the front of a music store and CD jewel case reveals this manifest truth. Furthermore, the damaging emotional and spiritual effects of music far outweigh what is stated above.*
Re: Why is music considered haram?
because it is distracting from the sole purpose of this life.. to worship and submit to the big man in the sky.

dude i saw a post from you just last week about being really mad at someone's threat to blow up all the cd shops. and then you post this kind of stuff. you can't have it both ways.
do you listen to music? if you do, how much of a sex-maniac has it made you so far?
Re: Why is music considered haram?
i wouldnt agree to this sex maniac idea. my common sense tells me its haram for same reason as wine somehow. Distraction. And I wouldnt deny its devil's legacy. One couldnt stop patting my foot on some alluring and charming tune. In the same way, its always comfortable to keep on listening to some enchanting music than go and offer two rakats of salah. A means of distraction for sure. May Allah make me strong enough ti defy it.
Re: Why is music considered haram?
the big man in the sky! why did he give us music then? lol rangoli.
0:17 till end…
Re: Why is music considered haram?
It is not haram, for there is only ONCE!!! where Quran specifies that "...And curse those who play music..(Instruments etc)" That's the only thing I've read in Quran that looks down upon music. IMO before Islam the Arabs had a array of musical instruments which they used to worship their gods and get in to various other rituals. But there was also festive music which the Arabs used when there was for example a wedding or some sort of celebration. Then there is music that uplifts someone's spirituality, music such as Sufis use and danced to. Now what Allah is condemning is the sort of music that is adulterous and satanic such as Rock and Roll and explicit music such as Rap. There is ample proof that our Prophet PBUH had singers and musicians on his daughters weddings.

Umrao Jan adda, and sitar music, the year 1843, no internet no TV. No any form of entertainment. A lot of reasons right there to get frisky to just about anything that moves. :D

first of all im not a dude, secondly .. you are mistaken it was not me!!
Re: Why is music considered haram?
I'm not saying it's haram or not, but the best explanation I've come across as to why it's frowned down upon is because it has the ability to completely change one's mood very very quickly and as mentioned, can be a very strong distraction from establishing a relationship with your Lord, and something which holds that much power on the heart can be dangerous.
Having said that I do listen to music and can appreciate the beauty in some of its forms, but I try not to 'lose myself' in it. xox

aaazmaish!! this world is test!! u know abt palmistry ! Allah sent 2 angels to teach it n its haram!!
Re: Why is music considered haram?
its haram in the same manner as alcohol and drugs were made haram.Like alcohol may have some hidden benefits but its disadvantages are more than those of its benefits.
Personally when i listen to music alot ,i stop losing track of my prayers and kind of lose my track? i feel my connection with allah talah is breaking and for me its imp. But on the same note i was listening to this talawat that was beautifully recited,it was soothing?
Allah talah made things haram to test which amongst us kill our desire over his.
Re: Why is music considered haram?
Well I'm with FBI786 on most things.
Heres my personal take on things.
Music itslef is not Haram if it is devotional or serves a good purpose. But if its for bad then you draw the line.
Quwwali is something you could say i'm addicted to it's like the rock n roll of the past. (I'm also a fan of geniune revoltuionary rock and roll and early heavy metal).
Put it this way it's a lot better in my opinion to be locked in my room chilling out to music thats praising the Lord above and his blessed followers, Music that drives you to acutally do good, Music that awakens the Zealout in you.
But I am not a fan of haram music that might encourage one to commit evil things.
Were Music evil then there are authentic cases of times when even the Prophet Peace be Upon Him allowed Music.
Two events stand out the Hijra party where the Prophets arrival was openly celebrated by a street party.
And the Day Makah was conquered when Rasool Allah allowed one of his Sahaba to recite poetry from the Kaba itself... the poetry was accompanied by much singing and beating of war drums and the general jist was bashing the enemy.
So as far as I am concerned thats my reasoning.
Now if that means I am to burn in hell fire then so be it... but at least i'll be roasted after the likes of Gaga and Justin Biebber... I cant stand thier ilk.
Re: Why is music considered haram?
Is it meaningless or mindless?
Is it crude or sexualised?
Is it worshipped or induces praise for the player/composer?
Is it taking too much time?
In some cases types of instrument are classed as liked or disliked - regardless of whether they are being played or not.
Since music bends the emotion - listening to it often either makes the heart brittle or rigid. Music hardens the heart - this is long term exposure.
Music has an addictive quality - and deprivation of it for one who is addicted can lead to anxiety. It is better to wean oneself off music or listen to it in private without promoting it publically. Music can be replaced with recitation and/or qasidahs. Some people utilise sounds from nature to replace synthetic sounds.
The art of the singer is to cast attention towards the message in the words - which need to be in praise of Allah (SWT) or in salutation to RasoolAllah (SAW) ... if the opposite affect is taking place such as praise for the performer or for his musical ability then it becomes questionable.
Many Shuyukh take the position that music is haram as a default with some exceptions. Other will say music is not haram per se but some instruments and the setting in which they are used is haram. Some will say music played with any form of song is haram.
The consensus in this matter however is that it is better to avoid music altogether than doing it for any reason, since alternatives without music are available.
Re: Why is music considered haram?
It's funny but when I used to practise violin I was more concerned about the prayer timings.
There have been always different opinions regarding music in Islam, some agree only duff is allowed, some say string music is allowed as long as it doesn't have any haram elements to it (probably the shirkiya and offensive lyrics). Singing is actually allowed during travelling in one fiqh (Maliki I think).
We sometimes listen to Classical music or orchestral music when on long drives just for the sake of educating the kids, I try not to expose my kids to heavy metal etc.
