I know a few sentiments will be heard during this topic but based on personal experience i state the following
Every guy that messed about in his days and didnt study hard obviously hasnt got a good job, most of these guys just turn towards religion and become hardcore followers..for example where I live most of the hardcore boys have no jobs, didnt study hard, speek low class english whilt preaching Non muslims about Islam.. what is it? Is this the easy way out? Is this the way so no one looks down on them because they are following religion? Is this a way to avoid a backlash from say their parents for not studying hard enough?
Re: why is it mostly the failures at uni/college that turn to religion?
why do we blame "westerners" for stereotyping? we have our own stereotyper who will take his "full of experience life" for example and paint a big pool of people with one paint, shava Riz .
after one dumb thread "Yasmine" he comes up with "drop outs turn religious"....
Re: why is it mostly the failures at uni/college that turn to religion?
I have seen all kinds though. My mentorr went to Columbia Med school and dropped out to go back to Karrachi Darul Uloom to become an Alim. He now teaches at Darul U'loom New York.
And he has done a great job in recruiting some really smart kids in the program.
I backed out, however.
I dont know about the situation in the UK or pakistan though.
Re: why is it mostly the failures at uni/college that turn to religion?
Perhaps it gives them meaing and direction...a reaction born of guilt from a past wasted?
I mean, I can't count how many brown gangsta-wannabes I know who have fresh business/economics/commerce/marketing degrees...and their sistah's in the humanities...shudders....if that was their fate, then they're better off how they are...
Everytime I see a brown person speaking ebonics I want to smack them...
Re: why is it mostly the failures at uni/college that turn to religion?
Who else can they turn to? & who should you turn to? Most of those “good students” are probably too busy with work, and use the term ‘studies’ to excuse themselves from their religious duties, thinking its all alright.

:k:
Great point. I see the same.
I do see successful people having a religious side, but its more because they’ve seen the ups and downs in life, and they know what it means to work hard. They feel like they owe their sucess to Allah, and that they ought to work harder for Allah to repay Him for his blessings.
But that’s a small group of people.
Most of the ones that get into your face about things and will sit there and argue with you on points in Islam just to show they “know a lot”, are precisely the ones who aren’t doing well in school and at the job.
It boosts their self-confidence, makes them feel more secure, makes them more happy that there is at least something they are “good” at. It makes them feel good to lecture others, makes them feel more powerful.
Re: why is it mostly the failures at uni/college that turn to religion?
Its true it happens. But when it happens on such a larger scale it cant be just coincidence, theres gotta be a reason.
The reason that i think is people redefine 'success' and rediscover it in places other than a university classroom. Are you looking at success only for this life or for the life Hereafter as well?
Most people go to uni/college because its been drilled into them. Everywhere they look around its the only obvious choice after high school. This is a decision that a lot of people have to make at the ages of 16-17 and at that age when peer and family pressure is on its peak, it is very difficult to think that university might not be their cup of tea. Its only when they go through a few years at univ they find out that this isnt what they're destined for.
Getting a job isnt a big deal. In most developed nations (and im guessing you are referring to the UK) you can easily make enough to get by without a university degree. Having a post university high paying job isnt a requirement for a succesful life either but unfortunately our materialistic society thinks otherwise.
What you might have also noticed about these guys is that they tend to be more active doing social work etc. That alone i believe is their success right there.
Re: why is it mostly the failures at uni/college that turn to religion?
Who r u to judge them anyway, u don’t know wot their reasons for becoming more religious were…turning to ur faith is not a bad thing, perhaps ur jealous that ur not as faithful to Islam as they r…that is a poor corelation…lots of educated ppl r religious n vice-versa…i c that this is just ur own personal experience, but trust me it’s not always true…that’s my experience.
Re: why is it mostly the failures at uni/college that turn to religion?
Why would you need to turn to god when you are a god on this earth yourself?
It reminds me of an episode from 'George ka Pakistan' where he said no wonder people are religious in Pakistan...there is no infrastructure, no support or protection for the common man. Who shall he turn to.. no one else but god.
And we are sitting here in our comfy chairs judging these people who are not successful from our standards. How Pathetic.
Re: why is it mostly the failures at uni/college that turn to religion?
when life fails us, we ( most of us ) turn to religion for salvation and peace of heart, while your conclusion is some what accurate but not 100%, for example in pakistan i've seen many intelligent people with good jobs to be more religious, also i've seen failures to be the one trying out all sorts of sinful stuff and not resent about it.
