The while rishta process in itself is very superficial. I mean you're being judged on your looks first and then personality.

It's not so shocking. Right here in good old southern Ontario, most guys and their mommies are looking for the gora rang (as pure as fresh snow). As someone mentioned above, even if a guy prefers the darker skin tone...... if mommy doens't approve, then he doesn't even know of that rishta (especially if going through the meet-through-parents route). Even really well-educated guys (or their moms, idk) have said no to really good rishtas and explicitly said they want a gori wife/bahu.. but, hey, we've made it to 2013 at least.
Nevermind. Desi brown skinned girls do much better in the dating marketplace in** Canada** than desi brown skinned dudes.
Canadian girls in general are notorious for having obnoxiously high standards themselves, so I would'nt worry about them not finding a rishta

Please note there was a follow-up re-buttle song by the VS, entitled Sanwali Saloni. It may not have been as catchy as the Goray rang ka zamana song, but it has stability and has endured through some decades. I believe the indian version of the song may have prompted the new onslaught of more “sanwali” Indian actresses, the names of whom I do not know because I don’t follow that crap anymore.

To be honest, I dont understand this complex, but it is not exclusive to Pakistani or Indian cultures. I know that oriental (chinese, japanese, filipino's...) have this emphasis on fair complexion too. For proposals I think fairness equals beauty, we all know that's not true. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I pray that your couzin finds someone who is best for her!

Hey guys, my cousin sister just received a rishta from some distant relatives. One thing I couldnt help but be sick at was the guys mothers comment : " humeh toh gori chitti larki chaayeih, aap ki ghar ki betiyoun ka rang kitna saaf hai blah blah"
I just mean to say, what is with the Desi mentality of wanting girls with "gorah rang"?? Do other factors not count at all? e.g. education? Deen? etc
Indian/Pakistani mentality is that we look at Western people as more Sophisticated and better. For us, fair skin is more beautiful and sophisticated. I have never understood how can that be true.
I am attracted to brown skin girls, I find them classy and they have a certain aura about them. I am not saying that they're better, just I prefer them.
Maybe we are born in an insecure society that believe Fair is better..

Back in the days, when my ex-mil had called my mom inquiring about me, my mom asked her how fair her son was because I'm whiter than white bread and my ex-mil replied what does it matter, garbage men are white (we're in the us). Looking back now, I probably would have been treated better by the garbage man.
at the end of the day, it's a person deen, akhlaq, and references references references!

I just could not relate your post to the Topic. You contradict yourself, Read your first paragraph and then the second paragraph. They're contradicting statements.

Beauty is not limited to skin color -- we don't choose to be born the way we look, I'd rather judge someone based on their actions. You can find people attractive irrespective of color. Allah made us all.
You know whats messed up? Pakistani people talk about fair skin, however take your Turkish fiancee to Masjid and you hear "haye gori sey shadi kar raha hai" from the self appointed guardians of Pakistaniyat.
As for the European looking Pakistanis on this thread, lets see the photos then.

I was kinda with a decent 1 on this. When you first shared your story, the thing that stood out was that your mother seemed to be more concerned about your prospective spouse's skin color. As you noted that your mother asked about him because you are "whiter than white bread". Then you mentioned the whole thing about deen etc. Your initial post was somewhat inconsistent, thus I can see why someone would question it.

Whenever I heard someone singing stuff like 'mera doodh tu chitta rang' on tv, I would wonder, are there people who would say something like this about themselves in real life.
And yes there are O_o
