Was watching a programme on Headline news (Indian Channel) on the current situation in Pakistan, their Major General (r) A. K. Mehta, said that it was a good oppurtunity for Indian army to take on Pakistan at a time when most of its armed forces are along the Afghan border.
Why hasn’t India done that?
Possible reasons
1- India wants to live peacefully with Pakistan.
2- India is having an economic boom ad will not loose it by engaging in a war.
3- India will prefer a proxy war rather than engaging its own military.
4- India won’t like to take on Pakistan for it being a US ally.

5-All of above.
from the indian perspective, what is there to be gained through war? there is no real desire for pakistan's portion of kashmir. it is simply the official stance.
i can only imagine that the general was referring to strikes on terror camps, but even then, militant activity in kashmir is at all time lows and certainly doesn't warrant initiation of war.
Moreover, It is PEACETIME deployment of pakistan army that is at a all time low along indo-pak border. So i don't see significant reductions in the number of troops along the border. Nearly 70% atleast(according to me) can be easily deployed again fully.

…akhand bharat is a **** idea of RSS and its cronies who imagine that their bharat mata’s influence extends from pakistan to bangladesh…:rotato:…Morons forget that it is their own influence which goes down if akhand bharat becomes a reality.
Iconoclast,
good thread. econometrics of war is not the issue as much as is, blooding will be.
no sane nation state, be it even India, would want to bring war on its land.
it is interesting to see how you phrased it - india's taking on of Pakistan.
we all know, how many Indians and Pakistanis are normally interacting with each other, while in abroad. some can be best friends even. but only interests may be permanent, not alliances in case of dual faced relations, be it on a personal basis or national - nation vs. nation.
also, the impact of the partition on the migrants - Hindus having to move or opting to move to India, and Muslims having to move to or opting to move to Pakistan, will cause a similar intensity of risks to properties and lives.
India has a part of Pakistan already - Kashmir. and if the only purpose is political to kill Muslims, or to deprive them of their rights in the occupied Kashmir, India is an has been losing more, as a country and a nation, through its agression, than it actually would like to.
as a country, the land mass of India is enough for itself to handle.
economic booms, are good for India.
besides governmental onslaughts for its Muslim population, India does have tensions, among its national groups - even based on geographic divisions - Southern India and Northern India.
of course, decades of exploitation by anyone, that is ever is reviewed later on,
will show the signs of what is wrong between the two neighboring nation states.
that said, the choices which you gave as answers may all be correct given specific rationale for warring neighboring countries.
yet, the history is not to be abondoned and the future existence of both states cannot be undermined.
No issue here ... Pakistan is doing a great job of taking care of itself so India has no need to step in and look like a bad guy....just take a peek at whats going on in Swat and you'll see that all india needs to do is let it go on while they just sit back and develop even further their technology industry and their GNP.
I'm sorry to sound so mean but have heard from a friend who USED to have his ancestral house in Swat, taleban burned it to the ground. Taleban also slit the throats of 13 randomly selected men and boys to illustrate what happens to those who do not obey their "sharia". I'm horrified over this and all Pakistanis should be too. So why is there almost NO ONE doing or saying ANYTHING about this???????? Why spend time on non issues when THIS is going on???????
What about Indian dream of an Akhand Bharat?
generally speaking, the idea of this being the indian dream is a pakistani fantasy and an exercise in self-flattery.
the indian dream is of wealth and global power...not of pakistan. lol.
The only reason India might be interested in is breaking up of Pakistan which it did in 1971 but then it will disturb the booming economy and world's support.

^ actually I am not sure even in 1971 if it started as us 'wanting' to break up Pakistan. There was general chaos in then East Pakistan with people of Bengali origin being treated atrociously, to the point of genocide by the ruling Pakistan army establishment. When they arose in rebellion as Mukti Bahini & Mujib Rehman India provided support for ending the killing.
