Why hate Musharraf so PASSIONATELY??

Okay, I know there have been discussions on this before.

But I still can not understand what goes in the minds of a lot of Pakistanis.

Prior to Musharraf, Pakistan was being arm twisted into signing the CTBT, had ~ 1 Billion worth of forex reserves, the GDP growth rate was middling at 3-4% or less every year (while neighbouring economies were prospering), the Mullahs were on rampage, there was little or no private electronic media, the economy was in the doldrums, and with a$$es like Nawaz Sharif who ran crapping in their pants to Washington, there was much gloom around…

This guy did sort out a lot of mess which had been going on. He confronted the Mullahs too. Yes, in his later years he totally screwed up, but why are we so amnesiac? Trust me, he led a much more balanced line vis a vis the whole war on terror issue than any spineless politician would have towed.

So why do people so PASSIONATELY hate him? He didn’t loot the country’s coffers, didn’t buy palaces abroad, spoke very well for the country and overall came across as a generally fine guy. With a democracy like the one we have now, I miss his initial years…

Please explain your sentiments.

Ooops...wrong forum can the mods please move this to Pakistan affairs?

Re: Why hate Musharraf so PASSIONATELY??

Doing a few good things don't redeem you of doing more bad things.

....

After admitting it by yourself, its surprising you asking the question. I am sure when he was doing better there were more Pakistanis with him than nowadays but every bad action from him turned more people away resulting in today when majority doesn’t like him anymore.

A guy gives out statement like “there are women in line for rape so they can get amnesty abroad”, dude I’d rather not have president then have one such.

His so-called fight against militants has been already exposed. With likes of Mehsud getting millions of US$ and roaming freely, mullah Fazlullah escapes from the attack and flees easily just like Mullah Omar escaped from Afghanistan on a bike (:omg: ). There is a whole bagfull/list of issues against Musharraf. You really don’t wanna open that can of worms dude.

He actually said that? How could I have missed that? Do you have a reputable source I can quote that from?

If he really did say that… he can burn in hell for all I care.

Re: Why hate Musharraf so PASSIONATELY??

You can't take away the fact that he handled Pakistan's foreign affairs very well and also did a lot of good for the economy. He wasn't corrupt. Can I say any of that for Zordari or Chacha Sharif? noway!

These current crop of schmucks can not even speak standing next to a western leader!

Re: Why hate Musharraf so PASSIONATELY??

Stalker, foriegn affairs well? Thats one of the WORST attributes. We became the joke of the world thanks to him. To add fuel, his stunts such as the book publicity tour at the expense of the country, and its izzat was another joke. He was very corrupt, as indicated by Pakistan's rankings throughout his tenure. The only admirable thing he once did was go upto Vajpayee in the middle of a speech and shake his hand ages ago, but then again, afterwards he bent over to India and handed his tushi in a wrapper for a good spanking. He also humiliated the nation when he defended an army captain who raped a woman and then said stuff like 'jis ko west ka visa chahiyeh woh rape ho jata hai'.

Pak became a "joke of the world" because at home with the freedom Musharraf had given to the press, there was much name-calling and rabble rousing going on. You also have the Karzais, the King Abdullahs, t he Malikis of the world, yet for some odd reason rarely are they browbeaten by their media and hence the world's. The whole rape issue was blown out of proportion, I frankly think its not even worth discussion. Corruption went significantly down during his tenure, and with thugs like Zordari around there is only one way it can go now...

Re: Why hate Musharraf so PASSIONATELY??

i dont think the ex president and army chief should be sent into the arms of potential enemies

remove him from office (because we all know he wants to hang around as long as possible without regard for pakistans welfare) and thats probably about it, but this is unlikely as he has personal feuds with both zardari and nawaz. zardari feels he knowingly compromised the security of bhutto plus encouraged her exile and nawaz will never forgive musharraf for ousting him.

even with all this said he should still be removed though simply because he made too many mistakes for sake of power and to impress condi

Would BBC be reputable enough?

Outrage at Musharraf rape remarks
Women protesters in Karachi Pakistani activists have reacted with outrage to recent comments on rape victims by President Pervez Musharraf.

He said that rape was a “money-making concern” and many argued it was a way to get money and a visa to emigrate.

Pakistan’s most-high profile rape victim, Mukhtar Mai, told the BBC no woman could subject herself to “such a horrendous experience” to make money.

Women’s groups and activists protested in Karachi on Friday, shouting: “Down with chauvinism”.

‘Money for justice’

The president made his comments in an interview with the Washington Post on 13 September, incensing campaigners and others at home.

**“You must understand the environment in Pakistan. This has become a money-making concern,” he said.

“A lot of people say if you want to go abroad and get a visa for Canada or citizenship and be a millionaire, get yourself raped.”**

PRESIDENT MUSHARRAF
"A lot people say if you want to go abroad… get yourself raped "
President Pervez Musharraf

In Karachi on Friday, 19 rights and advocacy groups vented their anger at the remarks, holding banners such as: “Who wants to be a millionaire - just get raped!”

Sumar Mallah, a fisherman whose five-year-old daughter was raped and killed on 5 September, was at the rally.

Mr Mallah said: “The police and the rapists have been insisting that I accept money and forget about my daughter. I will never settle for money. I want justice.”

Activist Fauzia Burney said: “General Musharraf’s remarks are so shocking because they are so removed from reality.”

Mukhtar Mai, who shot to world attention after being gang raped in 2002, allegedly on the orders of a village council or panchayat, earlier told the BBC: “I offer all the riches I’ve made out of the panchayat-enforced gang-rape to the president in return for justice.”

The Women’s Action Forum described the president’s comments as “outrageous”.

Last week President Musharraf told a conference on violence against women in Islamabad that Pakistan should not be singled out for its treatment of women.

He also lashed out at rights groups for their role in highlighting cases such as Ms Mai’s outside the country. Leading rights groups called the conference a “farce”.

The president’s critics say he pays only lip service to cracking down on the abuse of women, hundreds of whom are raped and murdered every year in so-called honour cases in Pakistan.

Despite government protestations that it is doing much to help women, many of those who try to register cases of rape and violence find it as hard as ever to do so, campaigners say.

Re: Why hate Musharraf so PASSIONATELY??

I say he was our best choice out of the worst people......Id take El presidente over Zardari and Shareef anyday!!!!!

Sure he made a few mistakes, who hasnt, some more than others!!! But he served our country well and we have all forgotten that!!!

mate 80% of the people in this country are illiterate ..you can sure hell rely on their judgement about who need to be hated passionately. In a country where corruption is not an issure and thugs like Zardari are heros in the eyes of the people, theres no wonder that Mush who put this country on the right track is being hated.Politics of thugs and duffers like Sharif and Zardari was finished in this country, even Ifitikhari Chaudary had believed that and he was backing Musharraf. But then a few mishaps and miscalculations towards the end his tenure landed Mush in hot water
And now all of a sudden Mr Zaradari who has no moral standing and who had his cases of corruption and murder withdrawn because Mush gave him NRO,wants to impeach Mush.I think if anybody needs to be impeached its Mr Zardari and Sharif for putting this country on the verge of bankruptcy though massive corruption and mismanagement in the 90s and then we can come down to Musharraf for whatever little mistakes he made or may be he did'nt?was killing fanatic mullahs in Lal Masjid who want to push us back to stone age a mistake?was killing the no1 daku in the country Nawab Bugti a mistake,a crime?(people say Altaf Husain is bad, this guy was like 'altaf hussain ka baap').I am afraid the people and not to mention the media have got it all wrong.Look whats happening to the economy of this country already with these duffers in power, ruppee is trading at 76 to a dollar, inflation is out of control and yet these politicians think that confronting Mush is still the most important thing to do.I hope Mr Kiani could step in,get rid of these 2 bozos and save this country from an economic disaster.

Re: Why hate Musharraf so PASSIONATELY??

achi baat hai hate karte hain. the one thing that should happen after musharraf is that these people be consistent in hating those who replace him.

blown out of proportion? What do you mean, he UTTERED THOSE WORDS! If you think he was taken out of proportion, please let me know what you think he was implying.

Also, I dont know if you followed the story or not, but Musharraaf himself made sure that the captain who was accused in that Dr. Shazia rape case walked free. That issue sparked alot of disharmony in Baluchistan, with the people having lost faith in Pakistan and its 'Government'. It also generated hatred for the armed forces of Pakistan, who were already being seen as oppressors in that province. Also, may I remind you that Mukhtar Mai's name at first was added to the Exit Control List to prevent her from going abroad and speaking infront of western audience? Thats how the self imposed president sahib should act when a daughter of the nation who gets raped brutally, asks for justice. I can also quote alot of idiotic stuff Musharraf has said too if you want. He was a joke, just like Bush, and has his own set of Mushisms. Sadly, he meant whatever he said.

Re: Why hate Musharraf so PASSIONATELY??

I THINK HE WAS PARAPHRASING SOMEONE ELSE....A STUPID MISTAKE FOR THE PRESIDENT OF A COUNTRY TO MAKE YES!!!

Maybe once the oldies are back to there nation looting ways will Musharraf be remembered!!!

Re: Why hate Musharraf so PASSIONATELY??

Stonecold, explain what you mean by 'paraphrasing'? He was asked specifically about what he thought about the rape victims and their fate, and thats what he replied with. As for your comment on looting is concerned, theres plenty of corruption, looting under his belt, and keep in mind hes been longer than BB, NS combined, and if you think his thugs shujaat, altaf etc were all farishtaz, youre wrong. The 90s may have seen alot of corruption and looting, but so did musharraf's decade, in addition to civil war, terrorism, instability, extortion, brutality, and loss of sovereignty.

Re: Why hate Musharraf so PASSIONATELY??

""A lot people say if you want to go abroad... get yourself raped " were his words which in my eyes summarizes the Pakistani nation. People do come up with these crazy ideas! It was just irresponsible of him to say it out aloud!!!

I remember a lawyer friend once mentioning that if you want Asylum in a country ...claim to be an Ahmadi!

Mate, literacy doesn't have anything to do with judgment ability, these are two separate aspects.

Please read transparency international for enlightenment.

I hate him because:
-destruction of the judiciary
-putting the country through countless crises for personal gain
-selling our own innocent citizes to the Americans for personal financial gain. Look at poor Afia Siddiqui being raped and tortured.
-Lal Masjid massacre.
-State of Civil War across the country.
-Failure to allow development of the political system
-Using MQM to crush opposition in Karachi to show his "support" i.e. May 12th 2007
