Moin Akhtar was once interviewed and was asked, you have been sitting all the classes existing in Pakistan and also abroad, there are parties you have attended where liquor is consumed freely, have you ever tried it ? He bluntly said I have never, there was a question but you could, he said I don’t drink because I have seen the people who are drunk, its enough for me.
Moin Akhtar might be lying, but I liked his reasoning for not drinking.
Loss of control on one's self. Disadvantages of drinking & being drunk can be seen/observed easily now. Unwanted pregnancies, HIV, unsocial behaviour etc etc. & On top of it u dont know what u are doing while u are drunk.

these are disadvantages of being drunk...but it is possible to drink without getting drunk, if only you are drinking small quantities (more if you're heavy:D).
so secular answer is drinking is a matter of taste, if you don't like the taste, why drinking? to do as others? stupid
religious answer is: alcohol is haraam.
I didn't opt to drink (not because of religious reason) because of my value system. I consider my health to be most important to me and always viewed alcohol to be dangerous and injurious to my health and so avoided it.
I don't believe the research finding that red wine is good for heart. It's a foolish and stupid conclusion. It's rather much better to consume red coloured fruit to derive the same benefit.
Of course when people hold you and force you to drink a little quantity then you can't help it. During my farewell party people caught my hands and made me completely immobile and forced me to drink couple of spoons of liquor. I had to oblige since I didn't want to disappoint the gathering while I was departing. But this is an extremely rare and embrassing event. Here too people force me to drink but I politely decline.
I find it amusing when people say they dont drink because they think its stupid when really theyre afraid Allah mian will spank their butts if they do. Hey! If youre not drinking because your religion tells you not to then be proud of yourself! Dont make silly excuses just so you can look cool.
I've never had alcohol because my religion taught me not to. When i was 16 the only thing keeping me from drinking was what i had been taught, not the harmful effects of drinking (like most 16 year olds know anyway). Ofcourse now that i have witnessed the ugly side of drinking (especially after watching university students drink) i am thankful to my religion that ive been kept away from it.
Pros: Lets you shift blame from yourself to bourbon when the frat guy you just slept with doesn’t call you back. –> jebus, if i hadn’t been drunk, i would have never slept with that jerk. He gave me herpes. Damn bourbon!!!
I think thats the line I have been looking for, why we should br proud of our religion, meaning we understand the religion better when we actually see the outcome of the doing something prohibited in religion.
I don't drink because I'm told that if you have too much you are likely to do what Gola Gunda's avatar is about to do........hurl.
And quite frankly, I think throwing up is one of the most unladylike things to do. Plus throwing up scratches up your throat.....and that hurts.
I remember seeing a girl from high school throwing up in the toilets at the grad.....apparently she had had too much to drink prior to the grad and her date (a hunky college dude) made her stick her finger down her throat to throw up......he then locked her in the back seat of the car and left her there to sleep it off while he danced with our group. Robin is now married to Vanita (one of the girls that he danced with in our group) and they have two beautiful boys. Neelu, the one in the toilet, is god only knows where. A little off topic.....but a funny story nonetheless.
