other than cricket and hockey? and some squash and/or tennis and badminton.
Why don’t we break the monotony and have our kids become swimmers or iceskaters or race car drivers or basketball players?
What’s with our mentality…or is it lack of resources back home. But what about here in the US and other countries where there’s no shortage of sport activities?
i think its the need to relate to your sports heroes, thats why all of a sudden when Naz or amir khan are boxing it generates more interest in desis than oscar de la hoya etc.
That I think is one big issue, second is that people influence their kids choice of sports and could be directing them to the sports that are big among desis.
there are desis in football/soccer in UK, boxing etc..
opportunities is one thing, interest and exposure is another..
I mean chinese have been in US longer than desis but yoiu dont really see them in NFL NBA NHL or MLB, gymnastics and ice skating..sure :)
also focus. focus on education (specific), no matter what the child wants to do, the desi parents will force them to achieve in a certain field. so sports is a long shot.
okay....so academia/professional wins with desis hands down when it comes to career choices but what about just having a generally wholesome personality that includes an interest in sports.
and by interest I mean and interest to participate and achieve rather than just watch from the sofa.
if it does not have a ball that needs to be hit by a bat, stick, foot .. we dont call it sports. That is why we are not into swimming and skiing and paragliding and what not.

Swimmers we are. I see an increase in desi men and women joining swim teams. Diving not so much because we eat parathay that go straight to our thighs!
One factor could be these sports cost a lot of money. ITake Ice Hockey for exmaple you are looking at atleast $800 in equipment alone. Lessons, access to the rinks add up. Same thing with skiing. Perhaps desis feel that that money is better utilized in something more towards acedemics
Another reason I have seen desi parents avoid the sports all together is that you have meets, overnight championships, cheerleaders :D There is a big influence of peer pressure from team mates. They don't want their children to get caught up in the hype and give them that much freedom.

Most of us are born and raised in areas where you do not have enough parks or indoor sport complexes. Kids play on the streets. And that is why we are only good in sports that can be played on the streets.
Those who develop passion, then spend some good money to buy equipment. A full cricket kit costs a good amount. Similarly a good table tennis paddle costs a good amount of money.
I used to get asked ALL THE TIME: “oh wow you’re so tall, do you play basketball?” And i’m like “No, do you play miniature golf?”
Mr Maroush and i play a lot of different sports anyway, so we try and encourage the children to get involved in as many different sports as possible…i don’t believe in beating the academia drum 24/7…i’d rather they be well rounded individuals, like myself.
It's changing slowy...but yes I have to agree that the main reason most parents don't want their kids in sports is because of the whole focus only on education deal
Nowadays a lot of desi kids are really big with basketball.......and its also a sport that can be played on the street with a hoop...or even on the driveway (at least thats how we play)
I think Desis love sports but the reason they like only Cricket is because of History. Pakistan has a long, rich and interesting history with respect to Cricket. Every Decade we have victories, hurtful losses and Legendary Cricketers. This is why you see the passion being passed on from one Generation to another. Unfortunately, it stopped with Hockey and Squash because Pakistan was not able to produce great athletes.
Lack of funds does have an affect but does not override it. When Cricket started in Pakistan, we did not have funds and in that era we produced the Greatest Cricketers of all time. Same goes with Hockey.
At the same time, we can see U.S have so much money but majority of the Americans are just stuck with NFL, NBA, MLB and Golf. Reason is simple. History. They have long list of players spanning decades and the lists just keep on growing.
i think it has alot to do with acedemia .... that you should be more involved in nerding rather than playin which is equated to having fun ... second thing i guess is the cost that is involved ... but i think team sports are important and everyone should play em
