Re: why doctors want doctors.....
I don't know what your problem is. Okay, I get it, you're a med student, my husband is a doctor qualified from Pakistan too. But that doesn't mean things you don't like, don't happen.
The fact remains that in Pakistan, there are a plethora of private medical schools. My BIL's wife's sister didn't get the marks to get into any of the gov medical colleges as they are highly competitive so her parents are paying for her to go to the fairly new private medical school (she needed okay grades to get in but nothing like the gov. college's) - it's not on the WHO list of approved schools yet so her degree wouldn't mean anything in US/UK for example.
I don't have a problem with this, if someone really wants to become a doctor, good for them. My problem is the lengths people go to, to get the rishta and then don't work for even a day afterwards if they get married by then.
Wow can you calm down. I dont have a problem, but surely you seem to think I should have. I'm just curious about it hence asking you to clarify what you mean since I myself dont know much about Pakistans system, if you dont want to then dont. You're showing temper like I attacked you or said its untrue, I'm only asking for some info. Seriously get a hold on your temper jeez.
Re: why doctors want doctors.....
You guys are all quite pathetic souls, just because of their profession, you folks think it is perfectly fine to mock and degrade them. Have some shame.
Re: why doctors want doctors…
Forget Pakistan…I know for a fact this happens in the U.S. if you have enough $$$ and know the “right” people. I have a co-worker who handles fiances of super rich families and he actually has told me about his clients whose children have been rejected from various medical/law schools or MBA programs. Then he arranges for a large (and by large I mean usually several million at least) “donation” to the school (he makes all the phone calls and handles all the contracts)…and all of a sudden…the “kid” gets a acceptance letter the following year.
I remember in high school…I actually had a close friend who was rejected from a college known for their sports medicine program. His dad donated enough money for the college to build a whole new dorm. Guess where he went to college the next year?! ![]()

Re: why doctors want doctors.....
So my fiance is a M.D. and he's one of the very few doctors in his social circle whose partner is a non-M.D. Now the following is strictly based on what I have observed in our personal social circle.
The doctors we know who has a non-doctor spouse....usually they were introduced by a third party that's usually a non-doctor (family or friends) specifically with the intention of marriage. All the couples we know where BOTH are M.D., they met on their own....either in med school, residency, fellowship etc. If not at work...they met on their own at some conference or some type of professional gathering. And some others were "set up" by their doctor friend who had a single friend....that was also a doctor. And yes, as some people have already mentioned.....I have heard quite a few of them say (both male and female) that it's easier to be married to a fellow doctor b/c then the spouse understands first hand the hectic schedule that can take over evenings/nights/weekends/holidays and just how draining the work can be(of course this depends on the specialty).

Oks sorry. I thought you were being overly incredulous and got annoyed.

Re: why doctors want doctors.....
Anyone knows who Dr. Pepper married?
Re: why doctors want doctors.....
There's actually a lot of girls who become doctors purely to get better Rishtas.
True story.
That's exactly what's the perception back in pakistan i.e. if you want to nab good rishtas become a doctor. From my MBBS class 80% of the girls are not practicing because they got married either in their last year of MBBS or during house job. The thing which personally irritates me, is that the class had 80% girls to begin with.
In pakistan girls aren't much into outdoor activities like boys. So they spend most of their energies in studying or cramming especially for pre-med field which results in them getting higher marks. Because of that majority of the girls get in medical colleges on merit. Quite interestingly even if a girl becomes a practicing doctor her family or in-laws will never be sending her to the remote villages or areas which are in dire need of doctors.
Their should be some bond or some condition that every one has to do some years of practice in the remote areas to be qualified as a doctor in countries like pakistan where govt is spending a hell lot of money to make such doctors who left the country the instance they get their degrees.
Re: why doctors want doctors.....
We're not talking about the highly competitive gov. colleges. There are lots of small private medical colleges where it's** just about the monies**.
loads of monies...and even then you have to at least pass your Fsc/O Levels examination. My cousin's daughter couldn't get into pre-med even after having good grades and paying money so she took Computer Sciences instead.
I can see the link you provided, around 30 colleges, do you consider them small or otherwise?
As far as I know, private institutes are supposed to be better than state ones anyway. And isn't that true that even with Pakistani state/gov college's education you have to pass some sort of exams in UK/US?
Re: why doctors want doctors.....
If you read what I said in another post, you will see that I said that you still need decent marks but no where near what you need for the gov. medical colleges.
Yes, you need to pass exams in US/UK but your medical degree has to be recognised in the first place by the WHO. Only those on the WHO list are recognised internationally. A lot of the private ones in Pakistan are not because they do not meet the requirements.
And please refer to Chiptole's post.
Depends on the country whether private institutions are better or not. There were some private medical schools in the UK which were swiftly shut down.
Re: why doctors want doctors.....
Also, isn't pre-med the Fsc subject combination you do? It's a completely separate issue if your cousin's daughter didn't get into that.
Re: why doctors want doctors…
Alright. :k:
I’m not sure about the mentality of becoming doctor for good rishtas…my family in Pakistan are weird in many ways but none of them are pursuing a career for getting good rishtas.

Yeah she applied for pre-med after she passed her matriculation in science subjects.
Re: why doctors want doctors.....
Well I don't think Chiptole's making things up and my husband has said exactly the same thing about his graduating class. It's a waste of money educating people for a profession which is supposed to be a national service and then people don't even do it.

But if their studies aren't even credible (coz most of them went to a random small college) then it shouldn't make any difference if they work or don't.
Re: why doctors want doctors.....
Now I am talking about gov. college's and I'm pretty sure Chiptole was too.

May be about 20 or 30% are doing it for good rishtas but others might be doing it for other reasons such as, their parents were doctors and they expect their kids to be doctors, some do it for out of fulfilling the need of having female doctors in Pakistan, some are doing it coz their friends are doing it, some are doing it to delay the marriage etc. And statistically speaking over-qualified women find it harder to get married.
