Gain knowledge and make contacts WITHOUT money? HUH? KYA?
If you're working........you're making some amount of money (great or small).....even if you're not making any contacts nor learning much. Unless you're an intern (and some of them might get paid).
I work because it gives me a feeling of satisfaction when I buy things from my own money. Just knowing that you earned it gives you a sense of pride. And you feel a sense of security knowing that you have a source of income. Work......I feel......can help keep you sane. It can keep your mind off things....(of course over-doing it will have negative consequences). I teach.......and sometimes my students get on my nerves........but reminding yourself that you have the potential to make a positive difference in someone's life....can be motivating and uplifting.
And when you work.......provided you don't work solo........you WILL make contacts. Whether you like them or not is another issue. But you will interact with coworkers......and clients........and professionals from other companies.
I also think, that in a way, having a job provides you with a learning experience that goes beyond just knowledge about your field. You learn how to interact with people of different personalities. You learn how to manage differences with others. You might learn a degree of control and patience. You learn about human nature. When you're only interacting with family and friends.....people whom you trust........you're in this protective bubble. When you get in the workplace..........you'll find people who are so ambitious that they lack a conscience. So ambitious, that they're willing to screw others over.....trample on people to get to the top. And you see these non-examples of behavior......and you can either choose to follow that.......or go about things with more integrity. There's much that you learn.....much that you're exposed to......and it can make you stronger.

men like women, women like money
not a difficult concept to grasp

money...
Re: why do you work
I am of the opinion that while money and financial security constitute one of our primary motivations to work, there are several other gratifications from work that keep us going in our jobs. On the outset, constructive use of our time is something we all seek to achieve in our jobs - for some, this constructive use means gaining knowledge, for others it means overcoming challenge, while for some it might be socializing etc.

I disagree. You do attain knowledge from work. Knowledge and learnings comes in different forms and levels.. There's the knowledge that you gain from books and lectures in a class. And there's, what we call, hands-on knowledge, which is MORE meaningful to people because you're physically interacting with.
I've often heard professionals say that their courses provided them with knowledge about the jargon of their field..........but it didn't teach them how to deal with various situations related to their work. In other words, your classes didn't teach you how to handle a particular situation. And many people gain "knowledge" about that through trial and error at work.
I'm an education major........my courses taught me methods of teaching.........they didn't teach me about. But there was so much practical classroom management related stuff I had to figure out through trial and error once I started working. Life exists outside of uni.........you gain knowledge about so many things everyday (TV.......reading..........interacting with others.......through your own successes and failures).
if ones comfortable, and has always been comfortable even in childhood, has had no problems in getting jobs etc i can see how a person might feel that they are working for something other then money
also someone with a lot of saved or inherited capital may also be working for benefits other then money.
personally, i work for the money
Re: why do you work
maslow's hierarchy of needs and motivation applies to almost everyone
Re: why do you work
I worked to satisfy my creative side, to get experience of the professional field and to understand life outside my home better.
Re: why do you work
I work, for being able to do what i want to do. And i believe your work should be something that you like, in other words it should not be just work, it should be your passion and you should be able to feel good about it, it should not be just a job, since you are human not some machine..
Work and Job is very recent phenomena...

So non-working women obviously like rich husbands.
maslow's hierarchy of needs and motivation applies to almost everyone
U must be preparing for PMP.
Re: why do you work
Maslow's theory is not just applicable to project management is it?
