Ok, so seriously, why the H do we have people coming on here asking “how common is fornication these days among muslims” ???
I am surprised at how many responses that thread got in the first place and how many people ACTUALLY attempted to answer the question. LAME! Every single one of you! LAME LAME LAME!
First of all, WHO GIVES A RATS BEHIND how common it is? WHY do you care? Is it so you can go “HAW HAI it is 50% omg…what has this world come to?”
How does asking these question benefit you in ANY way whatsoever?
How about you get a flippin hobby or better yet…go and spend the time reading namaz and asking for forgiveness from Allah for even asking such questions in the first place?
Fornication is a SIN…yes we all get it. But what is also a SIN is saying “oh I had 2 friends in college and they slept with their boyfriends” or asking “hey how many people are committing fornication…do you know any real people that did? do tell do tell!”
We are not supposed to expose others’ sins…that is a sin in itself…don’t you know that?
Re: Why do we have posts like how common is? W T F!!
Candy,
Among the signs of the approaching of Qiyamah are that certain sins will increase or become very common. We were warned about them; is the warning lame or wrong as well? If these signs are mentioned even in ahadith with the purpose of encouraging reflection of the world around you along with adherence to the straight path....then is it really that wrong to ponder over these signs and the direction in which the world is heading? It depends upon the intentions of the people discussing the matter. Is the subject being discussed out of concern and for reflection, or is it being discussed for entertainment? I understand your point in that it is hard to answer such a question with an actual statistic. I also understand that it is wrong to disclose the sins of others. And in my opinion what is far worse than the former is to crack jokes about fornication, to make it seem "cool" or humorous, and to downplay it.
Re: Why do we have posts like how common is? W T F!!
redvelvet - I never said that the warning was lame. That warning came from Allah and so off course we all are aware that we are closer to Qiyamah. What I don't understand is, how is discussing it benefiting us in anyway? We all know that fornication has become more common now amongst everyone (including muslims) but how is knowing the stats or the exact percentage going to help us "reflect" on it? And what exactly do we need to "reflect" on anyway? If you know it is a sin...just do your best to avoid committing it and do your best to guide your kids in the same way. As long as you know that you are pure of heart and practice why do you care if others are not? Why do we need to know if other muslims are doing it? Why do we even concern ourselves with it? Live and let live. Let Allah be the judge.
Re: Why do we have posts like how common is? W T F!!
Candy, if you read my post, you will see that I have implied there's no point in discussing stats; or perhaps I needed to make that more clear. You had asked what do we need to reflect on anyway? The reflection is not about the status of the act because we know it is a sin. The reflection, imo, can be about how times have changed...about how factors like the media and technology have not only downplayed fornication but have made it easier to commit, ...a reflection upon how it requires more effort in our times to remain chaste, and more effort is required from parents to devote greater attention to this matter. These are some things one can reflect upon if the subject is intended to be discussed in a constructive way. I am not supporting attempts to come up with actual statistics or to even disclose private matters of others.
Re: Why do we have posts like how common is? W T F!!
Yes, I totally agree with that, but then perhaps the title of the thread should have been more like "what can we do in today's sex crazed day and age to bring our kids closer to islam and help them guard their chastity"....something to that effect.
Re: Why do we have posts like how common is? W T F!!
^Candy, none of the posters gave anyone's name or specific details. When people say "my friend did xyz thing" but do not give any specific details which could potentially identify the person, the friend could be anyone, so I'm not certain how that is revealing anyone's sins.
Re: Why do we have posts like how common is? W T F!!
What is some hacker found out who that poster is in real life? Then somehow figured out who they were talking about? In this information age, the possibility doesn't seem that far fetched to me? And yes, I get it...that doesn't exactly reveal their identity....but the poster himself/herself knows they are referring to such and such friend. It just seems totally wrong to me!
I don't see how the 100 + people that responded seem totally ok with it! Ridiculous! I wonder if the thread would have gotten responses if it was on facebook? Lame people who hide behind a computer screen while talking about others GEEBATH!

Even if the scenario you described were to happen and the identity of a poster was discovered, how would the hacker go about finding out exactly which friend the poster referenced in a post? After all, most people only describe the friends they mention in their examples as "my friend," without any specifics. Overall, the scenario doesn't sound terribly likely.
By the way, do you feel the same way about posters who often post about how much they dislike their mother-in-law or sister-in-law and about how their in-laws make their life miserable? Does that not count as talking about others? Isn't giving a one-sided account of how one is the dutiful, devoted daughter-in-law who is constantly tortured by her evil mother-in-law on that same level? Especially, given that the mother-in-law is not here to give her account? I'm sure you've noticed that those types of posts always get loads of responses as well.
I am not making fun of these posts or claiming that there is anything wrong with them but, technically, such posts also fall under the category of "talking about others."
Re: Why do we have posts like how common is? W T F!!
It depends on the situation. I think there are a lot of girls on GS who are genuinly asking for advice from others because they are in a difficult situation with their MIL/SIL. I don't see a problem with that. They need advice/help from others...which is why they posted in the first place.
The started of the fornication thread doesn't need advice or help from others does he?
Re: Why do we have posts like how common is? W T F!!
You are right candy aple, it was a ridiculous and pointless thread. It was s surprising the guy opening up the thread himself had issues with shawn for attempting to 'malign pakistan and islam'. And as if it wasnt easy to guess what sorta responses are gonna come. Surprising is how based on a few friends' stats people were able to make a guess for the entire country. Nothing more than chaskabazi and taking out frustations towards pakistan. And as of the phd thesis, i guess not a serious comment. but if one has to get stats even rough estimates through a forum site and that too whose majority members are overseas pakistani, that alone speaks volumes about the quality of thesis.
Re: Why do we have posts like how common is? W T F!!
Couldnt agree more wid u candy. Though revelations with names werent made but disclosing sins for no mere purpose also encoursges sins.
Rest can argue watever they wsnt but i agree with candy.

Last time I checked the image of Muslims wasn't bad due to fornication. And noone said it was common, the thread had mixed views, which would be pretty much true as everyone's experiences are different.
We face far bigger problems than worrying about the potential high percentage of people getting it on.
Re: Why do we have posts like how common is? W T F!!
fornication and most other sins have ALWAYS been around.
why do people not see the obvious?!
